About this property

Renovated Mill Overlooking Portree Bay, Isle Of Skye

Built over 200 years ago, the house is the main part of Portree's former grain mill on the edge of the village. Above a burn, flanked by beech trees, it is close to the shore and commands fine views across to the Isle of Raasay. Portree is an ideal base for all Skye's attractions: walking; sailing; climbing; wildlife and bird watching. Equally, you can walk straight from the house into the hills or into the village for a lovely meal. The accommodation is flexible, with two bedrooms (one ensuite) on the ground floor and a studio at the top of the building (with a WC). The house is built on three floors linked by a spiral staircase. The middle floor is a very attractive open plan living area with the original mill stone. It has recently been fully renovated and redecorated, including installation of an eco-friendly heating and ventilation system. There is off-street parking beside the building.

The Old Mill was such a fun place to stay while on Islay. It's close enough to downtown Portree for you to walk there, but far enough to avoid the congestion. Finlay was a very gracious host, always quick to reply to any questions and very friendly in person. This is a historical building, so expect some architectural oddities , though everything was very comfortable. I loved the preservation of some of the building's more unique historical features, such as the massive millstones. I would absolutely stay here again.

Finlay's home is so charming, and an ideal location for visiting the Isle of Skye! It's fascinating to stay in a formerly-operating mill -- you can see the original millstone in the floor! It had a great layout for our family of 4 to spread out a bit. You can very easily walk to everything in Portree, which is great for picking up groceries or going out to eat. It's also a good central location to reach the areas of interest for hiking and exploring. Highly recommend!

Great house and great host. Very easy walk into town to enjoy the area and very easy to drive to all the great sights, hikes and adventures the Isle of Skye has to offer.Recommendation: If you're planning to eat in Portree make bookings and reservations well in advance. We received this advice early and this made our vacation much more enjoyable.If you can't find a place to eat, the Co-OP is a short walk from the steps of this property and you can get food to make in, which we did a few nights as well and was enjoyable.Would recommend this house and we plan to stay again on our next visit.

We had a great time staying at Finlay’s place in Portree. The house is well decorated with a lot of character. You will find everything you need for a short stay. The kitchen and all the rooms are spacious. But the best part is that Finlay is the most generous host you will have.

This was my favorite stay of our vacation in Scotland! The home was full of charm, very clean and comfortable, and well stocked with both basic amenities and extras. The host was very kind and helpful. The location served as a perfect base for our exploration of Isle of Skye, and Portree itself was such a lovely little town. If we ever have the opportunity to visit the area again, I hope to be able to stay a second time.

The house had everything we needed for our week long stay, with basic supplies for cooking and clothes washing. The hosts also provided a food hamper and flowers to greet us. It was very comfortable, clean and well positioned - very homely. The hosts were very responsive and prompt to act when we had an issue. Highly recommended by us.

Our stay here was fantastic. A clean place, with a few supplies such as butter and jam and bread which made our first day easy. The location cannot be beat. It was very quiet yet we could walk to town in 5-10 minutes. Walk in the other direction and there were stunning views of the harbor and rural scenery. The three levels afforded privacy and also a central area to congregate. It was the best accommodation of our three week adventure through Scotland.

The Mill was an absolutely delightful place. It's much larger than it looks in the photos. Incredibly comfortable and a great launch point for all the beautiful walks around Skye. It's also only a 10 minute walk into the heart of Portree.Finlay was also an incredibly friendly host and left us a lovely wee welcome basket with cakes, shortbread and some basics that we needed. If we come back to Skye we will likely try to book this place again, thank you Finlay!

Great location - in the middle of Portree yet still quiet

We enjoyed our stay a lot. The house is just perfect. Warming, spacious and quiet and still only a view yards towards the centre of Portree. The landlord has welcomed us very friendly and kept in touch throughout the stay for any questions we may have.

Wonderful house

We always travel in a large group and the mill is just right for that. The first floor is a large open space with kitchen, dining area and living room. We have stayed at the mill several times and it has been always great.

We had a fantastic holiday at the Old Mill. The accommodation really is exceptional, topped off by amazing views of the bay and minutes walk to restaurants and shops. This is our 5th family holiday in Skye and our stay at the Old Mill made it the best yet. We enjoyed every minute of our stay here and will definitely come back again. Thank you!

I am a retired teacher living in Edinburgh. My widowed mother lives in Portree and we find the mill a lovely base for family visits or just a break.

Why they chose this property

Lucy and I have family and friends who live in and around Portree and we stay regularly in the mill. It has become in part a family home for us and as well as a conservation project.
We have owned Number 1, the Old Mill (an Sean Mhuilean) since 2003. We did a lot of work in 2005 changing the layout of the middle floor and installing central heating. In 2012 we carried out further extensive work with 2 new bathrooms on the ground floor and installed an air source heat pump system complemented by heat recovery ventilation. In the long term we will restore the lime mortar pointing on the outside of the building.

What makes this property unique

The mill and the neighbouring cottages were build in 1805. They appear to be the first buildings erected on Scorrybreac Road and were part of an ambitious programme of building by James Gillespie Graham who was Lord MacDonald’s Superintendent of Works. James Gillespie Graham went on to have a very successful career particularly in Edinburgh. There he was responsible for the lay out of much of the later New Town.
