About this property
A Perfect hide away for coast and country holidays
Tucked away in an exceptionally tranquil part of the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, surrounded by wooded hills, country lanes and abundant wildlife, yet only a short drive to the Dorset and East Devon World Heritage Coast. The popular seaside town of Lyme Regis, the charming fishing village of Beer and picturesque Branscombe are all within 15 minutes. Axminster, home of the famous River Cottage Canteen, is 10 minutes away while their Park Farm HQ is even closer. A 30-minute drive will take you to the elegant Regency resort of Sidmouth.
The Byre is in the grounds of Bulmoor Farmhouse, which dates from 1797 and is listed by English Heritage as a building of “Special Architectural and Historical Importance”. The present owners, using traditional skills and materials, have painstakingly restored both buildings, and the ancient cider apple orchard. In the Byre, the generous dimensions of the former milking parlour, cowshed, large stable doors, hopper windows and high vaulted ceilings have all been retained, creating the quirky spaciousness that is the dominant feature of the accommodation.
Its attractions are year round, but at their very best in April to May when the woods and hedgerows are awash with wild flowers and the orchards are in full bloom - The perfect hideaway for a coast and country holiday.

We had a lovely stay at The Byre, it had everything we needed and Monica and Tony were very welcoming. We'd happily stay again. Very handy for the beach at Lyme Regis, and the Pecorama miniature railway at Beer.

A simply beautiful spot!
The Byre is a lovely space in a gorgeous area. Comfy beds, friendly hosts, pheasants wandering around in the yard. We really appreciated the apple cake and other treats, along with the suggestions for walks and places to eat in the area. We hope to have a chance to come back someday! One suggestion: we would have been grateful to have salt and pepper and maybe a cooking oil provided, since it’s tough to buy those in small enough amounts for just a few days. Thanks again for a wonderful stay!

Thanks for the lovely review. And thanks for tip, we will do that, they are small cooking items, that perhaps guests can easily forget to bring with them.
Unique property, in a beautiful and peaceful area of East Devon.
We have just returned from spending ten days at The Byre, the property is uniquely maintained in accordance with its original purpose as a converted cow byre. We loved the log burner, which we only used on a couple of occasions as we had amazing weather. Everything we needed was provided, and Tony and Monika could not do enough to make our stay extremely enjoyable, their generosity was very much appreciated. We would definitely recommend staying here if you enjoy beautiful countryside and peace and quiet. Many thanks from Terri, Mike and Karen

Much apprieciated! Glad you enjoyed your time at the Byre so much (But I can't take the credit for the great weather). Good to have such feedback that things are running as normal again ready for the predicted post-lockdown rush to this beautiful part of the country.

The children and I enjoyed the away from the crowd countryside and bird-life around us and the american turkeys visiting us daily. Lots of walks close-by including walk to Lyme Regis. We loved the attention to detail in the accommodation and appreciated all the restoration of the building. Very comfortable beds. Everything we needed was included. Would definitely recommend this holiday home. Monika and Tony were very kind and thoughtful owners of the property. My grandchildren wanted to live there permanently.

Many thanks for taking the time to write, this lovely review.
We enjoyed having you all, fantastic kids.
It seems the turkeys from the farm, would also like to live here. They are still visiting us every morning!
This property is a beautifully restored farm property (milking parlour and accompanying barns) in a peaceful location deep in the lanes of East Devon, but only 10 mins from Lyme Regis, and various nice hikes. The hosts, Monika and Tony, provided an awesome apple pie and clotted cream and bottle of wine as a welcome gift, and were really helpful in suggesting places to go to entertain our toddler (don't miss the Axe Valley animal park in Axminster!). We had a lovely week, and strongly recommend it.

Many thanks for the nice review and your useful feedback. So glad you enjoyed your stay with us, and I must remember to give extra emphasis to the Axe Valley Animal Park when advising future guests, especially those with young children.
We spent a wonderful week at The Byre. The location is stunning, providing both tranquillity and easy access to the beach. The accommodation was absolutely perfect and very well equipped. Tony and Monica are lovely welcoming hosts too. Not only did they greet us with scones, jam and clotted cream, Monica also baked us an apple cake which was just delicious.

Glad you enjoyed the place so much and thanks for the lovely review. It is reassuring to learn that we have The Byre functioning as normal again after being out of practice through the long 'lockdown' !
We stayed for 5 nights and enjoyed the peace of being in the middle of nowhere. Hosts were very friendly and helpful without being intrusive, they left us a welcome gift which included apple cake, scrumpy, elderflower, milk, eggs, and a bottle of wine. Monica even baked us an apple crumble and gave us a carton of custard. We were also given a carrier bag full of cooking apples when we left.
The only drawback was the lack of a full sized cooker, as we ate in every night, so cooking for 4 was a bit tricky but we managed.
The log burner was a nice touch because we stayed at the end of October so it was nice and cosy watching the flames from the comfort of the sofa.
Thanks for a great stay

Pleased you enjoyed it and found it 'nice and cosy' in that early onset of winter. It was harvest time in the orchard, quickly finished before the storms arrived, so plenty of apples available. We have considered a full size oven but our guests generally avoid large scale cookery while on holiday, so find the present arrangement of compact conventional and microwave ovens to be adequate.
Scrupulously clean accommodation amply supplied with amenities, comfortable, situated in glorious countryside. Wonderful for walking, with splendid views on East Devon Way, very relaxing.

Glad you enjoyed the East Devon Way. Our Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty group, are strongly promoting it, as an addition to the better known coastal ones.
A beautifully converted very spacious farm outhouse surrounded by woods and orchard deep in the Devon countryside. We were very well looked after by Monica and Tony. Near to lots of great coastline all you could ask for if you want a base with peace and quiet.

Thanks Chris. Yes, it was the exceptional peace and quite of the this place that first brought us here 25 years ago.
A lovely converted cow shed in a beautiful and peaceful location. Very tastefully furnished with beautifully made and antique furnishings. A lovely welcome too with eggs, milk , apple cake, clotted cream, scrumpy, elderflower and local wine! Nice log burning stove and also BBQ with logs and fuel provided. Very peaceful. The long, steep high hedged and narrow lane might not suit everyone though- i hooted at the bends in case anyone was coming! The second bedroom is accessed from the outside so this would not suit a family with small children but was fine with our older teenagers. Lovely walks possible and info on these provided.

heerlijke rustige en complete ambiance
Geweldig lieve eigenaren.

The Byre was the final stage of this painstaking project; completed in 2010.
