Beautiful gem of a house with amazing view
We greatly enjoyed our stay. The house is just as described. A comfortable place to call home, rain or shine. The view is amazing! What a perfect spot to sit with a coffee or drink and take it all in. Fiona is a kind and helpful host, who did not hesitate in helping us, when we realized a phone had been left behind. We highly recommend this beautiful house!

Winter's Cottage
I was looking for a winter "bolthole" away from the rigours of the weather in the the Outer Hebrides. This is exactly what I got, great location, a cosy house with two very effective fires to ensure warmth. A great variety of pubs/restaurants and within a relatively short drive to the bright city lights. Hosts/ Owners could ot have been more helpful.

Pleasant and peaceful place to stay in the south of the Cairngorms.
A nice cottage to stay in, you can feel that the owners are trying to make it as pleasant as they can. Not being used to how storage heaters work, we found it a bit cool at times. The log fires in the sitting room was lovely plus the beautiful sunset &, once or twice, the sunrise, was beautiful! It was interesting to see the owners family tree going back to the 1600s and photos of the people who may have lived there.

Well equipped and spacious cottage
Winter's Cottage is a spacious and well equipped cottage with lots of charm and beautiful garden and outdoor area to enjoy. It's in a lovely part of the country which is rural but within easy driving distance of the surrounding area. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, especially as this was an area which we hadn't previously visited and the weather was on the whole kind to us.

Enjoyable escape
The cottage is lovely: fascinating history and with all the comfort and facilities to make for a superb holiday. We particularly appreciated the huge garden and vistas to the fields and hills to the south and the proximity to local walks and spectacular countryside in an area which we hadn't visited before. Would have no hesitation to highly recommend and we hope to return in future. Very helpful friendly host too- thank you!

A really great place to stay!
The property was spotlessly clean for our arrival and the kitchen equipment provided was more than adequate for cooking, serving and storage. In addition to the very pleasant kitchen/diner, the sitting room, with its two excellent settees and a second television, provided every comfort for evening drinks and relaxation. The bedrooms allowed ample draw and wardrobe storage and the beds themselves extremely comfortable. It was good to see hairdriers in both bedrooms , and the electric shower in the bathroom provided ample hot water at even temperatures. On arrival the extensive lawns had been very neatly mown (both of them), and encouraged an outdoor evening glass of wine whilest viewing the hills across the glen. We highly recommend this property for a rural holiday in beautiful surrounding. We have stayed there on a number of occasion and anticipate a return in the near future.

Lovely cottage
We loved this cottage. The area was great, with walks from the village, and the view from the veranda was wonderful. We ate outdoors every night, even in the rain! The cottage is really comfortable and there is plenty of useful information on walks, local history etc. provided. The owner kept in touch with us very well.

The next generation has taken on the mantle of caring for Winters Cottage. Our grandparents moved from Scotland to Warwickshire in the 1930s. We three ‘Winter’ sisters live in South Warwickshire and manage the cottage as a holiday destination, project managing the maintenance and restoration with care. Black ranges, box beds in the kitchen and oil lamps have all gone. Babies are no longer born at the cottage – our children no longer walk across the field to the primary school by the river at Cortachy. But this bothy still holds a special place in our hearts. We have passed our love of the cottage to our children and the next generation – the 7th in line – are now enjoying the magic of this special place. History repeats itself. How wonderful to know that some things don’t change.

Why they chose this property

In the1850s James Winter moved to the cottage from his father’s farm in Glen Prosen where he raised 5 children with his wife Eliza. He opened a post office and drapers store to sell linen from his business in Laurencekirk in what is now the kitchen/morning room. We can just remember the mahogany shop counter, wooden floors and open fire in the 1950s. The shop closed in the late 50s but we still have mementos of times gone by, including hand made linen, Victorian furniture and books, a family bible and a clock given by Peter Pan author J M Barrie to his sister who married our ancester, William. The cottage was handed down the generations to our father Donald and on to our generation. We are proud caretakers for generations to come and we hope you love the cottage as much as we do!

What makes this property unique

Really easy to reach yet set in glorious highland scenery. At Perth you’ll soon be there. See the Grampian mountains coming into view. By Kirriemuir look out for Peter Pan; that’s where he comes from and he’s never grown up!

Can you see the red squirrels or deer feeding by the castle? Through the woods, over the river and up to Dykehead. You’re there and only 15 minutes since you left a different world. Sit under the verandah with a cup of tea and gaze at the wonderful view. It’s great to be back. Riverside walks, cycling, fishing, golf and the glens on your doorstep. Visit historic houses and castles such as Glamis, birthplace of Queen Elizabeth 11s mother and Scone Palace, crowning place of the King of Scots. Ski at Glenshee, visit the Braemar Highland Games or Balmoral Castle, Scottish home of the Royal Family. Walk the coastal path and see the quaint villages of Crail or Pittenweem, take a picnic and swim at Lunan Bay 35 minutes away. Visit historic St Andrews and Perth or Dundee, home of Scott’s ship ‘Discovery’ and the visitor centre dedicated to his fated voyage to the Antarctic. THE DUNDEE V & A MUSEUM OPENED IN SEPTEMBER 2018. FUNDAMENTAL TO THE V & A IS ITS ROLE IN PROMOTING AND ENCOURAGING THE DEVELOPMENT AND UNDERSTANDING OF BRITISH DESIGN AND IN PARTICULAR, SCOTLAND. RICH HERITAGE, CHARACTERIZED BY CREATIVITY, CRAFT AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP EMERGE FROM THE SUPERLATIVE COLLECTIONS AND EXHIBITIONS.

THE CATERAN TRAIL - one of Scotland’s great trails, is a fully waymarked 64 mile route through Perthshire and the Angus glens. It follows old drove roads and ancient tracks. The Caterans were fearsome cattle thieves who raided the glens from the Middle Ages to the 17th century. (see a reference to the Battle of Saughs). Stage 4 of the 5 stages is nearest the cottage - Kirkton of Glenisla to Alyth. Take a diversion on your way back to the cottage to the Wee Bear cafe at Lintrathan or Peel Farm cafe near Lintrathan. Excellent home made cakes!
