Winter Wonderland
Gorgeous property on a beautiful lake. It came complete with a brand new snowfall that painted the trees for us and made for great sledding, snowshoeing, ice fishing and sitting around the fire. Next time we might try to find some snowmobiles since there are some great trails nearby.

Explore, Play & Relax at the Edge of the Wilderness
What a special place that Peg & Tim have created for all to enjoy. The drive up on scenic 38 sets the stage for the surroundings you’ll enjoy while staying at Buckhorn on Caribou Lake. A short drive on well maintained gravel roads winding through the beautiful Chippewa National Forest and you find yourself arriving at the shore of Caribou Lake. We stayed in cabin 7, a beautiful log cabin with plenty of room for adults to relax, kids to play, and the whole group to come together and eat. The bedrooms are all spacious enough for luggage, the bathrooms all have showers and/or tubs, there is a sauna big enough for a large group, and a downstairs area with plenty of room for ping pong and a seating area to relax and play board games. The kitchen has lots of room and worked great for every meal. The kids loved sitting at the kitchen island and the adults enjoyed the unique dining table with a huge tree stump for a pedestal base. Outside, we loved spending time on the huge deck overlooking the lake, and enjoying the spacious backyard with fire pit and plenty of room for yard games. The walk down to the lake gives you glimpses of the water through the trees, then you reach a large wooden platform and take in the whole view of pristine Caribou Lake. The lake is wrapped in dense forest, treating you with nature’s finest views. Our kids loved the little island just off shore, they dubbed “kid island”! They used the provided paddle boat to reach it and they truly felt they were charting undiscovered territory! The rest of us enjoyed canoeing and kayaking (also provided), and we brought a fishing boat, managing decent success with smallmouth bass, but not getting those elusive Lake Trout! We took nature walks and hikes right down the driveway from the cabin, as well as going to nearby Suomi Hills. Peg is a gracious host and answered any and all questions we had. The beauty of the cabin inside and out can be credited to Tim and Peg for building and decorating/furnishing it. If you want a true north woods experience in a beautiful cabin, on a pristine lake, in some of the best forest area nature can offer, then Buckhorn on Caribou is where you should go.

Tim, a master log home builder established Top-Notch Log Homes in 1977. Building hundreds of high quality hand crafted log homes for people who could afford them, he and his wife, Peg, decided to buy a beautiful spot on a perfect lake and build log place that would be available to anyone who wanted to experience the enchantment of real log home. But it needed to be a place on the clearest lake they could find with plenty of privacy, surrounded by tall forest. So in 1998 with their two young children they set out to do just that. This cabin was completed in 2002 and constructed with our local White Cedar.
Tim continues to build log homes and Peg runs the place. Their kids are now adults and hope to continue keeping this cabin going so families and friends can continue to come and do what's most important in life. Get away from it all and spend time with love ones.

Why they chose this property

An amazing lake and a cabin that is literally carved from beautiful cedar and white pine logs. Travel the newly constructed Scenic Byway 38 which snakes between lakes, hills and forest into the Suomi hill where you,ll encounter the best cross county ski trails in all of Minnesota. The cabin is Located at the top of the continental divide, so the water in this lake and from our well is the cleanest and clearest you’ll find in Minnesota. This beautifully hand scribed 4 bedroom real log cabin sits on the shores of Caribou lake and is nestled among lakes and trails of the Chippewa forest. The cabin and property offer peace and quiet and is large enough for the whole family. And as your family grows the place has room to expand to a large family reunion or wedding in our neighboring (but not too close) Log cabins.
This is a licensed property that was built so the sole purpose of creating a place where guests can get away from it all. A place where you can surround yourself with your favorite people and make memories and start traditions. Open year round, this is the place where you can.breath fresh air, swim in this clear sand bottom lake, hike or ski our nature trails, fish for bass and Lake trout, And relax and enjoy the loons, Eagles, and jump into a cool clear lake after a hot sauna.

What makes this property unique

Large enough for a few families. Large yard and your own 200 feet of private lake shore. Trails of every kind right out your door. There are also two additional log lodges along the shore of Caribou which you could expand into as your extended family grows. But each of these cabins are more private then most private lake home. The cabin comes with a row boat and canoe.
If you would like to have a large event, such as a wedding this property can accommodate that with our wedding pavilion and room for guests.
