Quirky, but spacious home with wonderful view of agricultural fields and the ocean beyond. Generally clean, everything works. Lovely setting. The road is a bit rustic—go slowly. A good value. We would definitely stay there again.
Amazing views! Lovely home! Would 100% stay again! Amenities were good and worked well!
Some very small suggestions; floor mats/traction pads for showers and more shower hooks/racks would be a nice addition.
Just Lovely! Thanks for having us!
Loved our stay! Very relaxing country feel but close to Hilo and activities. House is beautifully decorated and has all needed amenities. Just need to be aware that two of the bedrooms are walk through with the first having the bathroom in it. Fine for families but may be a little ackward if staying with friends. Views are amazing! And i loved sitting on the patio reading a book listening to nature.

Thanks for your stay and comments. Note the main bathroom can also be accessed through master bedroom closet doors, and north bedroom has toilet and shower setup. Both water facing bedrooms open onto front deck with large overhangs, allowing access to living/dining area without going through the bedrooms.
Our family loved staying here! We have 5 in total and there was plenty of space for all of us. The rooms are very spacious, the kitchen is great for space and eating in, and we loved all the huge windows and doors looking out over the ocean (view was incredible!) Huge yard was fun for playing soccer in and we really enjoyed taking walks down the road. The hosts were absolutely fantastic!! Great communication, great directions to the house, and kept updated with us as needed throughout our trip, including information on how to keep up with live updates about the volcano, which we were lucky enough to see erupting! 5 stars across the board! I would recommend this place to anyone!
Beautiful house but needs more attention to details.
It was an absolutely beautiful house and a has a lot of space. The house has great potential but maybe since it's a big house, certain cleaning details are overlooked.

Guest seemed to search for odd places of minor cleaning issues, as an excuse to leave after arrival next morning asking for refund for majority of stay. We don't typically have cleaning issues.
This property is about 1/2 mile from the ocean with terrific views from their porch across fields to the ocean. (You can't see or hear the main road in between). You're about 5 miles from downtown Hilo so it's a breeze to get in town if you want dinner, shopping, etc. The home is as depicted in the photos. This home is a wonderful, charming place with plenty of space (especially for 2).
While there are other units on the property, we had complete privacy and spent the bulk of our time on the patio without any interruption or knowledge of others being around. I'd highly recommend this property - and felt lucky to find it after going through so many options in the Hilo area.
If anyone is a foodie, Moon and Turtle restaurant in Hilo is the best food on the island. I wish I was in Hilo long enough to go back. Reservations necessary.
We were a little surprised by the access to this property. It was off the main road down a long bumpy unpaved pathway. What we didn't expect was to share the property with more than just the caretaker. There were 2 others (I believe) who also lived there. The laundry was outside and shared by everyone. If sleeping in "the quiet room" it is alarming when they start laundry at 6:30-7 in the morning as there is a door to the bedroom right next to the laundry. There are technically 2 bathrooms in the home and 3 showers which worked well for us as we were traveling with a friend. You had to go through 1 bedroom to get to the other or go out the patio. It wasn't quite what I expected, but we made it work.

Directions to the house note the last half mile is a rough, mixed paved/gravel road, GO SLOW. We can find a place to add that in description. Description does note there are 2 tenants away in separate units from main house, guests do not share any space with them.. The bedroom arrangements were also listed, the "quiet room" is a third bedroom added with shower/toilet/sink not included at all in description (built 2019). Laundry shouldn't be used by anyone that early, will address.
My wife an in laws stayed here for 3 days and it was beautiful. The house was nice with a big kitchen. It was away from other houses so you couldn't hear anyone else. But the view of the ocean and the sunrise were to die for. Great stay and 10/10 would recommend
Very helpful property manager with many local suggestions. Nice view of the ocean from the back yard. Quiet and isolated. There are another next door rental property but quiet. Property is slightly older than pictures. Has most necessary stuffs except no disk washer. Overall, a pleasant and comfortable stay.
From beginning to departure our rental experience was seamless, THANK YOU AMY! As you exit the highway and drive up the road to the property you realize you have now entered into the country and nature. The house has every kitchen tool you'll need and provides a generous open floor plan, open and designed for a merging of inside/outside. Walls of glass doors swing open allowing trade winds to cool the rooms. The panoramic view of the coastline with it's changing light and colors continuously reaffirms the magisty of Hawaii. Hilo is less than 10 minutes away. Shop for groceries and any supplies at KTA in town and then settle into the house and truly enjoy this treasure. Again, Amy, THANK YOU FOR YOUR ALOHA SPIRIT.

Lovely, comfortable property with attentive property management
We were staying for Merrie Monarch...my girlfriend, myself and another couple. The space worked really well for us. While there is only a master bedroom and a smaller bedroom, you can choose several configurations for who sleeps where, including the living room, as they all have more than one bed or mattress. The huge kitchen and giant dining table were perfect for congregating - we just wish we had been able to spend more time at the house. But we had things to see! The lanai is perfectly situated to take in the enormous view of the water.
The only glitch was that something was going on with the water heater, and one of our party showered on Saturday night and didn't get hot water. Well, I blame him for not telling the rest of us, because I took a shower on Sunday, discovered the issue, and told Amy, the property manager right away. She came right over to problem solve, got the owners on the phone, they wanted to come up to the house and solve it right away, but we were getting ready to leave so just asked that they wait. As we were driving out they were coming up their long, long dirt road with cookies for all of us as an apology. I only relay this because they handled it exactly as they should have - with attention. Things happen - but it's how you respond that makes the difference in the hostelry industry.
Thanks so much for a great stay...and we hope to be back!

Eclectic, spacious place in a beautiful location
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Puumoi! The place is very spacious, quiet, and provides everything you need. The pictures accurately depict the space - it is just that pretty. The location is perfect to explore Hilo, only a few miles from Akaka Falls, and the Hamakua Coast is right at the bottom of the hill. We picked up fresh guava on the road to the house and papayas just off the lanai, visited beaches, waterfalls, caves - and of course the famous Hilo farmers market. Amy was very helpful and responsive with tips and recommendations - she is the heart of the place! We will definitely visit again. Thank you Amy!

About the host
Hosted by Mark Nelson and Sharon Gill
Sharon and I worked professionally in New York and Washington before building this home in Hawaii, and spend most of our time here since retiring.
Why they chose this property
Sharon and I built this beautiful, spacious home on 7 acres in 2003 to fulfill a dream of living in Hawaii. Our home takes advantage of an incredible view 5 miles north of Hilo on the Hamakua coast, up slope from the scenic drive and Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden. . Come share our neighborhood with the farms, local horses, space and quiet while you appreciate what we feel is the best of Hawaii. You are close to many of Hilo’s local activities, and within easy traveling distance to the Volcano sights, waterfalls and lush vegetation and attractions of our coast. We offer an extremely spacious main living house area that mirrors the space of our outside view, and an ohana next door for a smaller living option. We love the sunrises over the water, the constantly changing weather, and the sunsets over the mountain. We hope you enjoy this place as much as we do.
