About this property
Traditional Hawaii Beach House
Twenty nine miles from Kilauea with a view of Mauna Kea on clear mornings and the Pacific Ocean visible across the street. You will hear the ocean, birds and frogs. We are located in a residential area with street noise in the daytime from people visiting the popular neighborhood beach parks.
We share our clean and comfortable home for you to enjoy your trip to Hilo and the Big Island. We offer the vacation home experience you are seeking. The house was originally built in 1936, over 20 years before Hawaii became a member of the United States.
We have installed AC in the living room in May 2022. One of the bedrooms still has a window AC for those who need a little bit more. Opening the many windows and enjoying the fresh ocean breeze satisfies most guests. Our home was originally built a long time ago but it is modern while maintaining the character of a traditional Hawaii beach home. You will see geckos on the property and see the ocean horizon and birds from our picture windows. We almost always see sea turtles at the nearby beaches. It's best to drive to the beach first to ensure you are comfortable with the walk, especially if you have children with you.
We offer 2 bedrooms and 2 baths with an office/library in our ocean view home with great snorkeling beach access. The beaches usually have calm waters, excellent snorkeling conditions, shade, tide pools and green sea turtles and are all just across the street with a short walk. We are a short drive to water falls, botanical gardens, Volcano Park, restaurants and shopping.
Our prices include all fees. No hidden fees.

The place was in an amazing location within walking distance to Carlsmith and Ricardson's beaches. Great place to stay in a really quiet and safe neighborhood.
We really enjoyed staying here. The house has a lot of character and is equipped with everything you can think of. And the location was perfect for walking to the beach. Seen so many turtles.Hope to go back again.
Another great stay, our 4th or 5th time, at this Hilo home along “Four Miles” road (Kalanianaole Street). The house is always clean and well stocked. The hosts are great and respond to messages quickly. The wood floors, built in cabinetry, and classic older Hilo style interior is great to check out while relaxing in the evenings. The location is fantastic with beaches nearby and the drive to the house is fun every time. We will be back again for sure.
What a cute & charming home in a great location near snorkeling and water fun! Not too far from town or shopping. Water toys provided too, which was very helpful and convenient!

We are happy you had a fun trip! Safe travels and aloha.
The house is so beautiful inside. The main bathroom is great as are the light fixtures. Lots of nice touches throughout! Very clean and private. We loved being so close to Richardson Beach Park. Great snorkeling! Also, lots of other beaches are also close by. BTW, the notes binder for the house is in the cupboard in the living/dining area. The yard has nice fruit trees, and we loved hearing the coquis at night. We had a great time!
Overall a good stay. We had to use WD 40 on the gate. Soap and shampoo in the showers would have been nice. Instructions for the air conditioner and tv remotes would have been nice. Very noisy outside the house all night. I had to use ear plugs.
We fully enjoyed our time in Hilo at the property. It was perfect for our family of four and was in a great location for restaurants, the beach and our day trip to Volcanoes National Park. We would definitely stay here again.
THE rental is fabulous as everything that you would possibly need for cooking entertaining laundry services safe yard extremely close to multiple beaches very convenient and the managers are extremely easy to work with highly recommended
We loved staying at this house. The beaches were walking distance away and had great snorkeling. The house was beautiful, clean and so comfortable. I would highly recommend this place and if we come back I would definitely book again!
It was our third time staying at this property in Hilo. I absolutely love it here. It's a great neighborhood...mostly quiet even though it is a main road, easy access to different beaches and very spacious. The house has a great layout and was very user friendly. I love the amenities including the washer and dryer, great kitchen, etc., etc., etc.
We loved our stay and enjoyed the snorkeling nearby. I think our favorite thing were the birds and frogs as our nightcap. I would highly recommend this home.
It’s a quirky older house with lots of character. It’s a great location and is well-furnished. Nice having a standalone house. The noise from frogs and street can be loud, but didn’t bother us much. Only complaint is it was difficult to keep main bedroom at a comfortable temperature (window unit in second bedroom keeps it as cool as you want, but rest of house relies on a mini-split unit in living room).
Our third stay at Scott and Merin's lovely home. I had written in the guest book - this is a home, not just a house, which provides for such a comfortable and relaxing stay. This home has a perfect location close to town and all of our favorite beach parks. Thank you both for another great week in Hilo!Jack Simpson and Family

We are the proud hosts of the traditional Hawaii house. We offer our home as occasional vacation rental while we finish our careers in healthcare on the mainland.
Why they chose this property
On our first visit to Hilo we visited Richardson and Carlsmith Beach Parks and never wanted to leave. The beauty of the lava rock wall, the character of the home and location were impossible to resist.
What makes this property unique
There are large yards in front and behind the house with fruit trees. There is ample onsite parking and a security fence in front for your privacy. This house is in the unique area of Hilo with walking beach access for swimming and snorkeling. The location provides cool ocean breezes from the front and mountain breezes from the back of the house.
