About this property
Walk to downtown and Amphitheater
Come enjoy the Bend, OR lifestyle. The Mallard house is located in the heart of the westside. 8 minute walk to downtown Bend through Drake Park. 2 blocks from Galveston ave and 4 blocks from Newport Ave. There are at least 8 breweries within walking distance to The Mallard house. All the best restaurants in Bend are also within walking distance. When we turned our home into a vacation rental we had two things in mind; inspiration and comfort. From the highly figured maple trim to the high thread count sheets nothing was cut short. The house was my father's and luckily I was given the opportunity to turn it into something unique. It was not the easiest house to upgrade, being built in 1918, it had it's own idea of what it wanted to be. So we compromised and the outcome is really special. I have it listed to sleep 4 one bed is a queen and one a full.

This was the perfect VRBO for me and my wife, especially given how pet-friendly it was. The fenced yard was a game changer for our dogs and the proximity to everything cannot be beat. We would stay here every trip to Bend if we could!
Loved that this place had a washer and dryer available and was very conveniently located in town! Definitely a bit outdated and had some character but made it feel all the more homey!
We absolutely loved our stay! The house was so comfortable and inviting! The fact that it was dog friendly is a must for us, but they provide everything for your four legged family as well! -We came to Bend to see a show at the Amphitheater and the location of the house was perfect! So easy to access! Also, we met the owner as we were leaving and she was wonderful! Very friendly and welcoming! We will definitely stay again! Thank you very much for a wonderful trip!
This is a very quaint and special place. If you are looking to get in touch with the history and charm of downtown Bend, this place will fit the bill. We enjoyed our time here very much. Thank you.
Our stay was the first time in Bend, so the location was perfect. It was easy to get anywhere and within walking distance to many restaurants and park. The house itself is small, with a small enclosed front yard, which is great if you have a dog. My husband was worried about the Wi-Fi speed because he had to work remotely. But that worked fine as well and we could all connect without any issue. Our only suggestion is that someone check the utensils and trash bags between guests. We only found two teaspoons (one was more baby size) for eating cereal and there were no spare trash bags that we could find. Overall we loved Bend and the house worked out great for us. Would recommend!
The house totally fit our needs for our 2 night stay. The beds and couch were comfortable and the location was amazing to walk to the park and downtown. Loved the accomodations for our dog too :) We had a great time!
Really loved the location of the property! Walked everywhere. The off-street covered parking in the back worked well for truck loaded with kayaks and canoe so we didn’t feel the need to unload each night. Fenced yard was perfect for our 70 lb dog. If you have a small dogs there are gaps under the fence in spots that will need supervision. Our stay was in the summer with temperatures in the mid 90’s. The widow AC unit and fans kept the house a comfortable temperature for us - we don’t like a freezing cold house in the summer so worked well for us. Lots of charm in the house with the bathroom and kitchen nicely redone. Enjoyed the French press coffee on the porch each morning. Never had to drive to a meal, lots close by. Even close enough to walk back from Drake Park after tubing the river with inner tubes in tow. Can’t say enough about this location if you are interested in exploring Bend on foot! Great communication with host. Seamless check-in and out process. Would definitely stay here again when coming back to Bend!
We love staying in Bend, however we found this property was not for us. This is our opinion why:
1. We missed the dishwasher, it called in to question the sanitizing of the few pieces of silverware and utensils we found .
2. No salt and pepper
3. No shower wash or bar soap
4. Lights were inadequate: above the stove didn’t work and the bedside table in one of the rooms didn’t work.
5. The horse drapes didn’t close all the way, leaving you exposed to the neighbors in the back if they stepped outside.
6. No screens on windows, so you cannot enjoy the night summer air unless you want all the bugs too.
That’s enough to give you the idea- it’s just not for us.
Thanks for the opportunity to stay.
This house is in a good location, but that is the only good thing I can say about it. This property is poorly maintained, and poses health issues. A variety of small things were broken such as the toilet paper dispenser, the stopper to the only bathroom sink, methods to open the blinds, and so forth. And boy, was it dirty. Cob webs lurked in the corners. The floor had several pee stains on it (or what looked to be pee stains). Under the couch was horrific! The vent for the bathroom was full of debris. When we arrived, the house reeked of air freshener. The reason for excessive use of air freshener became apparent at about day two because it smelled musty, and there was no ventilation. That is, there were no screens on the windows or doors, so you could not get fresh air in the house without letting in bugs. As a result of the general uncleanliness coupled with the lack of ventilation, I had a horrible allergy attack. Of course, there wasn't a box of Kleenex to be found in the entire house!
On top of that, the door from the main bedroom to the bathroom is very short - not a standard door size, so my husband kept hitting his head, as he wasn't used to ducking just to go to the bathroom, especially late at night when he was tired. I was afraid he was going to get a concussion due to repeatedly hitting his head.
Between the lack of maintenance and the health issues, we had to leave before our time was up. We simply could not stay there any longer due to my allergies and my husband hitting his head. As a result, I cannot recommend this property. Shame on the owner and on VRBO for even listing it! It is so disappointing to go on vacation, expecting a decent place to stay, and instead be subjugated to this squalid state of affairs.
Loved this cozy property. Took advantage of the fireplace as it’s still chilly in the springtime in Bend. Quiet neighborhood with great proximity to parks and the downtown area!
There wasn’t central heating which made the bedrooms super chilly. They have wall heaters and a fireplace in the common areas, but nothing in the bedrooms. No coffee maker, just French press. We didn’t do any cooking so I’m not sure on that part. Great location though and our dog loved it!
We rented the Mallard House to meet up for a virtual conference. It worked out great. Relaxing open floor plan. Clean and quirky. Lots of greeting walking to stretch our legs after a lot of sitting and great restaurants!
One of the best places I have stayed in Bend! Katey is wonderful and made check-in and check-out super easy. The location of the house was awesome!! We could walk to downtown, local stores, and we're close to great hikes!! I would love to book again when we visit!
Great location walking distance to river, restaurants and breweries. House was perfect and cozy. Would stay again on my next trip to bend if available.
The property was clean and lovely, all the amenities that anyone would need. A short walk to excellent food and beer.

Wonderful home - Quiet community - Easy walk to great Bend neighborhoods
We really enjoyed our mid-July stay at the Mallard House. The location can’t be beat with restaurants on Galveston Ave, Newport Ave and parks on the Deschutes River (Mirror Pond) mere blocks away. Downtown Bend and all it has to offer is only a 15 minute walk. Even the Old Mill District is less than a 30 minute walk.
Despite being close to everything, the house is in a very quiet neighborhood. No worries about sacrificing proximity for noise.
The house itself was very clean. The owner has taken great care to maintain a cozy, eclectic charm. Beds and bath were comfortable with great linens. I may have missed it in the description, so that’s on me, but the bathroom is a Jack and Jill style accessed only from the two bedrooms. Kitchen was well stocked with supplies/utensils for breakfast, lunch, and snacks. We could have cooked dinners easily, but why pass all the great food (and beer) Bend has to offer.
Off-street parking in a carport off the alley was an unexpected convenience along with the full size washer and dryer.
One minor quibble: even though it gets cool at night, 90-plus degree days do heat up the house. The a/c unit does a great job of cooling the kitchen and main living space but the bedrooms were warm. Fans helped. As did opening the windows, but there were no screens. Most of the year that won’t be a problem; and again, probably more of an issue for folks like us who come from the cooler, wetter side of the Cascades.
We highly recommend the Mallard house for your next visit to Bend!

Cute, great location, good value.
Katey’s description is spot on. This is a very cute cottage that she’s updated very nicely. It adds up to a funky little cottage, honoring historic cabin-style and nicely considered new updates in a cute, walkable neighborhood. The original pine built-ins are charming. Nicely furnished living room with warming gas fireplace. The kitchen is updated with quality new appliances. Beds and linens and towels are comfy and the shower is very nice and modern. It’s roomier than I’d expected. But - and this is all on me for not checking - this seems to have been a long-time smoker’s home. While the house is very clean and well ventilated, there’s no escaping the smoker smell.

Walking distance to everywhere
Our time was very comfortable in this cute and comfortable house. We were able to walk our dogs to town through the park and also down the street to the food carts. Weather was cold, rainy, then snowy but the place was warm and the gas fireplace made for such ambience. The bed was comfortable, the kitchen had lots of counters, and the sun room darling. The bathroom shower was great, with lots of water pressure. Do be aware the coffee maker is a french press and you will need your own soap for the shower, although there is lots of hand soap and hand lotion. We will come back to rent this place again!

We loved the Mallard house! It's super cute, and so close to town! We would love to come back again!
The house was the perfect fit for us! We loved how we could walk to town, and see all the local shops.
