Great location across the street from the beach

Our family of 4 enjoyed our stay here very much! The house was close to the beaches we wanted to visit and downtown saugatuck. The property has a spacious backyard with fire pit. There were plenty of bedrooms to pick from.

5 bedroom house

This is a nice property with features that make you feel like you've stepped back in time, with modern conveniences. Owner was very responsive, especially when a city-wide power outage greeted us upon arrival. The lake is beautiful as is the private beach, but just know the hill coming back up is steep to walk to the street. I would definitely stay here again.

Response from VrboOwner on 30 Jun 2025
Thank you Drew. We used to be able to walk down right into the Lake but erosion caused us to build steps and now the slope to the steps has gotten much steeper. We are trying to figure out a solution to that.

Absolutely adorable home. Love location! Wonderful beach area. Took long walks every day, just a delightful place to stay and enjoy everything Douglas and Saugatuck has to offer. House is well equipped. ( Could use a can opener) . But overall, nice place to stay

This was everything I was looking for! A cozy cottage VERY close to the beach and close to town. There were lots of places to hang out, cozy couches in the living room, a nice breeze on the side porch, a back deck and many games and dinners were had in the dining room. The kitchen is fully stocked and there’s a charcoal grill. The beds are squeaky but they’re comfortable. The location couldn’t be more perfect. The private beach is practically across the street down a little trail and the sand and water were beautiful. If you prefer to use stairs to get down to the water Douglas beach is also a very short walk. The whole neighborhood is beautiful and perfect for morning and sunset walks. Downtown saugatuck is just a few minutes away. It was the perfect family vacation.

Thank you Valarie for your wonderful review. The squeaky beds are part of the cottage flavor— the bed frames are old but the mattress are kept up to date. We are trying to figure out a way to get rid of the squeak!! I am so glad you enjoyed yourself!

Family Vacation at the Tea Room Cottage

My family spent a week at the Tea Room Cottage and had a great time! The cottage was cozy but had plenty of room to fit all of us. We loved using the screened in porch for reading and back porch for having meals. The dining room table was also big enough for us to make a puzzle and play card games. The shared beach is just a short walk down the road and was big enough for multiple families to enjoy the lake. The shoreline is a bit rocky but we made due with water shoes and once you get past the rocks the bottom becomes sandy.

Basic Michigan cottage

The Tea Room is billed as a vintage cottage and is definitely worn around the edges. It is in a wonderful location with easy access to the beach and has a great backyard and screened porch for games and family gatherings. The house is advertised as sleeping up to 10. We had that number of people and feel that is too large a group for the tiny cottage to handle since it has only two small, very basic bathrooms which were stretched by constant use. The cottage was not particularly clean and could use a good handyman to patch screens, clear plumbing problems and do basic maintenance. The refrigerator died during our stay. The rental company did a great job of replacing it quickly and the owner was happy to reimburse us for lost food. Would recommend this cottage for a small family or friends group who want a relaxed, low-maintenance setting.
Response from VrboOwner on 6 Mar 2020
The Tea Room is a classic cottage with vintage charm. It does indeed offer a fantastic location, private 'shared beach' access on a beautiful, pristine area on Lake Michigan. The cottage is charming with many wonderful features, a comfortable living room with large, wood-burning fireplace, a great back yard, deck & screened porch with some lovely new furniture. It features a large, bright dining room, comfortable bedrooms. The downstairs bath is a basic bath with shower stall only but is freshly painted and clean. The upper bath is actually quite roomy offering a lovely deep, vintage, claw-foot tub which was refinished last year. It is freshly painted with brand new curtains and shower curtains as well. The baths and kitchen are always thouroughly sanitized between guests. The kitchen is roomy with updated cabinets and offers a brand new microwave and refrigerator. Yes, the refridge went out, unfortunate, but was due to a power surge caused by a big storm. It was replaced within 7 hours. The cottage itself is older but in good condition. It is always clean, we are known for this! We are extremely particular about this to the point of, if needed, doing the floors 2 & 3 times to make sure we get all the sand which comes up from all the beach fun. I suspect that perhaps what our guests thought might not be 'clean' is the fact that a couple of the floors, kitchen/bath lino & porch floor (painted), are a bit older, and are an oatmeal color, and though clean, don't look super bright and fresh. The porch floor too, though always 'clean' does need sanding and repainting, on slate for this coming spring. The screen/storm windows too are older, but again are clean as are the sills and windows, checked and cleaned as needed each turnover. This group of guests did number 10 which exceeded our maximum number and at their request was given an exception. They arrived with a very large volume of belongings as well so I can see how they may have felt cottage a bit small for them. We do prefer smaller parties as well. But the cottage has ample space for 8 very comfortably. The Tea Room is, as are most cottages, a work of love in progress. No place is ever 'perfect' but The Tea Room is a wonderful cottage offering a spectacular location. Our pricing is in line with other area cottages and amenities. We work to improve every year so that our guests may have the best experience... Please read our other 'glowing reviews'. Come stay with us. You'll be glad you did!

Lovely place to stay for a long weekend on Lake Michigan.

Our Happy Place!

Our first impression was how clean and well taken care of the cottage was. The layout is fun and quirky, which adds to the overall cottage charm. The screened in porch provided more living space and was a great retreat for our family to relax and enjoy. The cottage also had many amenities including a washer/dryer, dishwasher, grill, fire pit, deck, internet and TV as well as private beach access. Our family loved our time spent here.

Great property, great location!

We have been to Douglass and Saugatuck several times but this one was the best. In total it was my eight year old daughter, my eight year old nephew, my 17-year-old daughter, three of her childhood friends and myself. The size of the house was perfect! With five rooms, and everyone room having its unique look, the girls were able to choose a room and the little ones picked the room with the two single beds. The two bathrooms make it easy to take showers and hot water never ran short. The big dining area with the big table and the kitchen that had everything I needed to be able to cook made it easy make breakfast and dinner for all eight of us everyday we were there. We Couldn’t of been happy with the location. The Douglas beach is so close that at the slowest pace possible it is only 5 minute walk The teenagers were able to walk down the private beach access, put their blowup rafts in the water and paddle down to the Douglas Beach in a race, it was so much fun and great pictures. It was a great area to ride your bike or take the dog for a walk. The property has a nice size backyard for activities. Saugatuck State Park is a very, very short drive away and Saugatuck is maybe a seven minute drive. I couldn’t be happier with the location! I highly recommend this property if you’re looking to have a great family vacation!

This is a unique, rustic cottage with a charming history. Really enjoyed the screened in porch and back deck. Air conditioning and fans were very helpful in the heat. Beach access was down the street a bit with sandy path. We did not try to go down to the beach.

Perfect vintage lake cottage!

I have stayed in 2 other homes on Lake Shore Drive, spanning 30 years. This cottage reminded me of the others - perfectly vintage. Loved the “duck” sign to get to the kitchen under the stairs! (There are two other entrances). The bathrooms worked great. The kitchen is big enough to maneuver in. Not hugely stocked so bring your own stuff if you’re picky. You have to appreciate the charm of this type of cottage. The rooms have thin walls and you can hear everything but that makes it more like adult camp! Location is perfect! Great beach access. Will stay again for at least a week. Thanks so much!!

I am sorry Donna that you had an issue with the lights. I had requests for a dimmer as the dining room lights were too bright and didn’t realize that it would cause a problem. So glad you enjoyed the area and hope you will come back again. Sue
