Hobie’s Hangout | Oceanfront Isle of Palms Beach House Near Charleston
Hobie’s Hangout is a classic oceanfront Isle of Palms beach house offering the relaxed charm of a traditional Lowcountry cottage with private beach access just steps from the sand. This welcoming Isle of Palms vacation rental sits directly along one of the most beautiful stretches of beach on the island and provides the perfect setting for a peaceful coastal escape.
Unlike many newer properties, this Isle of Palms beachfront home preserves the character of the original beach cottages that helped make the island special. Built in the 1950s, the home features original tongue-and-groove wood walls, beadboard details, and wood plank flooring that create a warm and nostalgic atmosphere guests love. With four bedrooms and two full baths upstairs, the home comfortably accommodates up to seven guests, making it a wonderful Isle of Palms family vacation home for beach trips, girls weekends, or relaxed coastal getaways. The upstairs living area offers a cozy open layout with comfortable seating, a dining table for six, and a fully equipped kitchen with cookware, appliances, and both drip and Keurig coffee makers. One of the most loved spaces in this Isle of Palms oceanfront rental is the large screened-in porch overlooking the beach. Guests often spend mornings here with coffee while listening to the sound of the ocean or enjoying evening meals at the teak dining table while coastal breezes move through the porch.
From the porch, a private path leads directly to the beach behind the house. This oceanfront Isle of Palms home offers easy access to miles of wide sandy shoreline where you can walk, swim, collect shells, or watch dolphins pass just offshore. The downstairs level provides additional family-friendly space including a ping pong table, washer and dryer, and a separate kids’ TV area. Two indoor après-beach showers make it easy to rinse off after a day in the sun. Outside, guests will also find a covered area, charcoal grill space, and outdoor shower.
Beyond the beach, Hobie’s Hangout is also conveniently located near some of the island’s most popular spots. The Isle of Palms Recreation Center, with its large playground, tennis courts, and sports fields, is just a short walk away. The Isle of Palms Marina, shops, and island restaurants are only a short drive down the island. For guests wanting to explore beyond the beach, historic downtown Charleston is about twenty-five minutes away. This makes Hobie’s Hangout a perfect Charleston beach vacation rental where visitors can enjoy both relaxed island living and the culture, dining, and history of one of the South’s most beautiful cities.
Whether you’re planning a classic beach vacation or simply looking for a peaceful oceanfront retreat, Hobie’s Hangout offers the timeless charm of an authentic Isle of Palms vacation rental right on the beach.

Hobie's Hangout was a wonderful place for us to return to each day after our adventures and exploration of Charleston and the area. While this family home was not a modern mansion, it was very comfy and provided everything we needed. The private path to the beach was perfect! We also appreciated the great communication with the property managers and the easy check-in/check-out procedures.

Thank you so much for staying with us at Hobie’s Hangout, Sue! I’m so glad the home gave you comfort. Hobie’s really has its own kind of charm, relaxed, unpretentious, and centered around what matters most: easy beach days and time together. The private beach path is one of our favorite parts too, especially for those early morning walks or quiet evenings by the water. We also appreciate your kind words about communication and the check-in experience. Thank you again for choosing Hobie’s Hangout, and we’d love to welcome you back for another laid-back island stay!
This is truly a “family home” and is great for those folks that don’t need a newly renovated mansion for their vacation. It was very cozy, spacious, clean, and had everything we needed for our stay. The host communicated very well with us about everything and we were extremely pleased with our stay!

Thank you for the wonderful feedback! We’re so glad you enjoyed the house and the location, and it’s great to hear that the communication and rental process felt seamless from start to finish. Even during the height of the season, we work hard as a professional property management company to keep things organized and streamlined so guests can focus on enjoying their time at the beach. We’re thrilled your week was such a success and would love to host you again anytime!
Perfect location, loved the beach cottage character, provided everything we needed, loved the walk to the beach thru the path, and the lower level pingpong table was a bonus on the rainy days!

Mr Steve, you were such a fun and easy guest to communicate with, and we’re so glad you made the most of your beach getaway even with a little rain in the mix. It's never expected to encounter rain when seeking a beach vacation, so we hope to keep just enough in the home to make those rainy days better, I am so glad things worked out as planned. We’d love to have you back here, or any of our other locations, anytime for another (hopefully sunnier!) stay.
What a great house! Lots of character (in a good way). It felt so comfortable and peaceful. Access to the beach was easy (via a walking path through the dunes), as was the drive into Charleston.
This property was great for our family. There was enough space for everyone, the ping pong table host many challenges and created many laughs. The back porch was amazing, able to hear the ocean and enjoy nightly hours of conversations.
Though the house is small, it has mighty attractions... It has the old beach charm, something that is lost today with the mega-mansions. We loved the outdoors; we played whiffle ball, softball, corn hole and star gazed. The house is not fancy but honestly we felt like we had won the lottery with the proximity to the beach, great outdoor space and a smallish living quarters; which is exactly what we are used to at our own home. We would gladly return... Thank you for your family's story and opening up your home to your "extended VRBO" family.
We are so glad we selected this home for our first trip to South Carolina. I did extensive research to determine which barrier island to go to and which property to stay at, so we didn't make the decision lightly. We loved Isle of Palms in general and chose this home primarily for its direct beach access. It's situated on such a beautiful stretch of beach that wasn't busy and a very easy 1-2 minute walk from the house. It was SO wonderful to be able to go back and forth during the day when we needed to eat or just take a break. The home itself was very comfortable for our family. We had everything we needed during our stay, check in and out was very easy and I appreciated the detailed instructions. They had lots of beach items that we were able to use - chairs, a boogey board, sand toys and I was very happy to see there was a wagon to transport everything. A lot of beach towels were provided which was very nice. I enjoyed looking at all the family photos and art work on the walls - it was very heartwarming to know that they raised their kids there and we were staying somewhere that had so many wonderful memories. We would 100% stay here again and next time we will bring more family since there was more then enough space!
Our stay at Hobies Hangout at Isle of Palms was wonderful. The location of house being right on the beach made it perfect for our family beach vacation. The house is comfortably furnished and has that old vintage feel to it that I love. We had everything needed. The front porch looking out at the ocean was a favorite spot. Beth, our host, was great in looking after us.
This beach house felt like we were staying at a family friends house. All the other house Around this one are big and fancy but no personality- just some company dressed them up. Hobies hangout truly felt like the family invited us to visit. The walk to the beach is magical through the dunes. House had everything we needed. Beth was incredibly helpful and attentive- true southern hospitality.
My family and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this classic beach home that we found to be comfortable, a great location, and an easy walk to the beach. The kitchen was well stocked for our cooking needs, and we enjoyed eating inside around the table and also on the screened in porch as we listened to the ocean. The view from the screened in porch and deck is awesome and my husband enjoyed rocking on that deck and reading. The private path to the beach is enfolded by natural shrubs and sea grass that leads you right to the ocean. There is a yard to throw frisbees or a football in, both were there for guests to use as well as a croquet set and other beach games. Fabulous long walks on the beach and we found numerous shells on the beach every morning. Sunrise at IOP is breathtaking. Excellent local restaurants on the island and in Charleston. We also found Sullivan's Island to be quaint and a fun excursion. My sister and I rode bikes throughout this friendly and safe community. Very relaxing time away. Will definitely book another stay here. Very comfortable and healing.

About the host
Hosted by Sarah Botkin / Dreams N Druthers
Hobie's Hangout (named after "Hobie" Alter, an innovator of sailing and surfing, inventor of the Hobie Catamaran and many surfboard designs) became home to the current owners almost 30 years ago. They spent these years raising their two children, working, living "island life", and now offer this home for others to create wonderful family memories in the same way they have.
Why they chose this property
Hobie’s Hangout offers something increasingly rare among Isle of Palms vacation rentals. A true oceanfront Isle of Palms beach house with the relaxed character of the island’s original cottages.
Located directly on the sand with nothing but dunes between you and the ocean, this Isle of Palms beachfront home lets guests step outside and reach the beach in moments. Many homes on the island sit several rows back, but here you can enjoy the sights and sounds of the Atlantic just steps from your door.
Built in the 1950s, the home captures the spirit of “old-style Isle of Palms” with original wood walls, cozy bedrooms, and welcoming living spaces that feel like a traditional family beach house rather than a typical vacation rental. Guests especially appreciate the relaxed atmosphere and easy indoor-outdoor living. Whether you're enjoying ocean breezes, watching for dolphins offshore, or gathering after a day on the beach, the home’s layout makes it easy to slow down and enjoy the natural beauty of the island.
The location also makes exploring Isle of Palms simple. The beach is right outside your door, the Isle of Palms Recreation Center and playground are a short walk away, and the marina, restaurants, and island shops are only minutes down the road. For guests wanting to explore beyond the island, historic downtown Charleston is about twenty-five minutes away, making Hobie’s Hangout a perfect home base for both a relaxing Isle of Palms beach vacation and a memorable Charleston getaway
