Whitby is an ancient port with a ruined abbey, which was the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s gothic novel ‘Dracula’ while the port is still a working fishing harbour. It also has sandy beaches, donkey rides and rock pools, not to mention some of the best fish and chips in the world. Its narrow medieval streets are dotted with boutiques, shops, pubs and fish restaurants.
The cobbled Church Street takes you to the foot of the famous 199 steps leading from the town to St Mary’s Church and the Abbey Headland and Visitor Centre. The Whalebone Arch and bronze statue commemorating Whitby’s most famous explorer, Captain James Cook, stand proudly on the West Cliff, facing directly across the harbour to the Abbey.
Whitby forms part of the North York Moors National Park and is the perfect location for keen walkers. The Moors are a special place, where history and nature have combined to give us an amazingly vibrant landscape with woodland and moorland, rich in heritage and wildlife.
While staying in Whitby a visit to the coastal town of Robin Hood’s Bay is recommended, a picturesque old fishing village on the Heritage Coast of the North York Moors with narrow, twisting cobbled streets and alleyways.
