June rental

The property had everything we needed for a great stay. We enjoyed late breakfast on the deck watching deer, turkey and rabbits. The location was great for access to everything in the Black Hills and to Rapid City.

Great home away from home

This house was perfect for my wife and I. Very clean and stocked with whatever you may need. The house is decorated very nicely giving it that home away from home feeling! The deck backs up to trees for a nice private view. The pellet grill there to be used gives such great smokey flavor to your food. I would recommend this home as it is in close driving proximity to Mount Rushmore, Custer Park, and the Black Hills. It was also only a 2 hour trip to Devils Tower as well if that's on your agenda. GREAT STAY!

Everything we could have asked for... and more!!

Jes was the best hostess! She gave us so many great tips for our trip, all of which served to make our trip more enjoyable and helped with planning. The cabin was absolutely perfect! It was clean, well stocked and truly felt like home. The beds and pillows were so comfortable which was a godsend after our days of hiking. The cabin was perfectly located for everything we wanted to see in the few days we were there. This couldn't have been more perfect. Thanks for everything Jes!

The perfect little cabin in the woods!

This was our first time to book with VRBO. We were very pleased. The listing was accurate and actually even better in person. The deer greeted us upon arrival. Jes was fantastic in communication both before we booked the cabin and while we were there. The location is perfect. The cabin was private while also being an easy drive to get to many wonderful places. We went to Mt.Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Deadwood, Custer State Park, Fort Hays, and Rapid City. This vacation was one we will never forget. I highly recommend staying here.

Cozy, cute, clean!

This has to have been the cleanest, best unkept VRBO I’ve stayed in! For a smaller cottage, it has everything you need, truly. I can’t believe how Jes has thought of everything. We stayed with our two kids and they slept on the pull out couch which worked nicely. We enjoyed the peaceful backyard… watching a bunny and a deer pass through each day. Jes was so responsive when I messaged her leading up to our trip and even during our trip when I had a question. Great stay all around. Also close to everything we wanted to drive to.

Almost perfect

We enjoyed our stay at Tumble Inn. The cottage was very clean and perfect for two. The best part was the private deck. We enjoyed sitting by the fire pit and gazing at the stars. Negatives: 1)the cottage is only a few feet off the road. 2)Don't rely on the local grocery for supplies - They only had a quart of coffee creamer and it was $8! It was worth the drive to Rapid City to get what we needed at Safeway.

Small but sweet!

First, I would like to say Jessica is the best property owner/manager I’ve ever dealt with…she has the quickest response time ever. The cabin itself is small, but it worked for three of us. It is very clean and well-maintained, with everything we needed for our stay. The mattress is quite comfortable, the kitchen is well-appointed, and the back deck was wonderful. Yes, the street is very close to the front of the cabin, but it didn’t interfere with our ability to wind down and enjoy the hills. We rode our ATVs each day, then returned to the serene deck for a glass of wine. Thank you for your hospitality!

Not as advertised!

This is a beautiful home with many nice touches, but we were shocked at how close to the road this property is. The bedroom corner is only about ten feet from the road. It is advertised as surrounded by 5 acres of land and luxurious privacy. We were expecting to be secluded from other homes and certainly a main highway. The view from the living room window is the road, also the bedroom window. Yes, there is a flat screen TV, but all you can get on it are the DVDs provided, which there is a nice variety. It's also a little crowded with too much décor. Overall, if you want privacy and peace and quiet, this is not the place.

Cozy Cabin

This was the ideal place for my wife and I. It was the perfect amount of space and the location was central to everything we wanted to see and do! Probably going to book a longer stay so we can get more in! Five days was not nearly enough. Owner was great to communicate with and quick to respond.

Nice place off the beaten path, but close to pretty much everything.

The listing is exactly as described. It’s got one bedroom, living room, kitchen and a bathroom. There’s a fold-out couch in the living room that the kids said was actually very comfortable! Check in was easy, a key with a manual code-box. It’s about 1/2 mile from the local gas station and diner. The LP fire pit on the deck made for great late night outdoors time. We also saw a handful of deer and baby rabbits on the property. Will definitely stay again if we make it back to the Black Hills area!

Peace and quiet, convenient location.

Evening visitors. Deer would regularly be 30 ft behind the cabin around 6:30 pm. The cabin is just about right in the middle of the forest. Scenic road to Sturgis off of drive wave. Definitely would stay again.

Cozy Cottage, Whispering Breeze

Flying in from Ohio, settling in to relax on the back deck, we closed our eyes to hear the distant trees talking through the breeze. Down the hill and through the valley they whispered, "Clear your mind and refresh your soul.". Jess gave us fantastic ideas from sight to tours, breweries and eateries. Our needs were met with casual comfort and amenities. Thank you Jess for a fantastic reprieve on our way to Yellowstone and the Tetons. HIghly recomend! Jojo and Doug

Rimrock house

We had a great stay here. It was perfect for our family (4year old and 9month old). We really only had to bring our stroller and everything else was available. The bed was very cozy. We loved to watch all the deer and turkeys every evening and sometimes in the mornings. Very easy walk to the general store and also stopped at the hobby store next door. We also took a walk down to the creek. Most of all the location of the house was best as we were right in the middle of most things then didn't have long ways to drive with the kids through our trip.

About the host

Your host

Host profile image
We are Steve and Jes Hessler, and we, along with our seven (yes, you read that right, 7) children and three grandchildren, are the owners of the property you are staying at! Jes is originally from the area and suffers extreme homesickness living on the plains of Nebraska, as you might imagine. We have been looking for the right place for our family to come together in the Hills for a very long time.

We were delighted to find the existing cabin at Norris Peak along with room to grow and build more space in the future. The location is so ideal, within approximately 20 minutes or less to the majority of the area attractions, hiking, fishing, kayaking, swimming, ATV-riding, boating, relaxing, fine dining, winery/brewery list goes on!

As an area native, Jes is happy to help you plan your trip. Just provide some details on what types of activities you enjoy and let the fun begin!

We can't wait for you to love Tumble Inn as much as we do!

Why they chose this property

We'd been looking for the perfect property for YEARS. When we found this little cabin, the location wouldn't be more ideal. It's located within walking distance of a little store and gas station (which is great, due to our proximity to this area we have awesome cell service at the cottage), we are nestled behind a bend in the road with only one visible neighbor, the rest of our property is surrounded by National Forest Service grounds. These grounds are marked by orange boundary signs and are open to the public for use (see National guidelines for more info). The location is also ideal because although my main goal was to have a place to enjoy the spectacular outdoors, I had lived in Rapid City for 15 years in the past and enjoy the friendly and lively City as well. Our cottage is perfectly situated between the City and within the playground of the Black Hills with quick and easy access to both! All of this on a winter-maintained school bus route ensured our family and yours year-round enjoyment.

In 2014, the Cottage was completely renovated, including the roof trusses, plumbing, wiring and insulation. Our little historic cottage is now a brand new home!

A perfect escape/getaway, our home is a place where you can do what you want to do, your options are limitless.

What makes this property unique

Tumble Inn is set in a relaxing swoop of the canyon, nestled up against craggy granite walls. Morning and evening deer, turkey and other wildlife visit the cozy "cup" in the valley where the firepit is located and the deck overlooks. A 2-minute walk takes you to the creekside where you can fish, kayak, tube or just listen to the water pass by in the little park behind the church.

Here you can feel like you are miles away from it all but can walk to get supplies for the steaks you are about to grill up if you forgot something. Access to every possible activity is within 15 minutes. We never want to leave when we visit and we hope you feel the same way!
