About this property
Secluded Quiet Home Near Pahoa. Easy Day Trips to Hilo & Volcano National Park
Stan and I had a property in Kapoho listed with VRBO for four and a half years. Mama J's Pond House was taken by Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of fire on June 5th, 2018 during the Kilauea eruption. During our time of being hosts, we learned a lot about hospitality and what guests desired in that five-star rental. We are happy to announce the second phase of Mama J's called The Tropical House opening Nov 20th, 2018. We call it the Tropical House alluding to the lush greenery & flowers that surround this very private home & its' yards. There are mature lychee, mountain apple & avocado trees you may pick from if fortunate enough to be there during the season. ~~Mama J's 3rd bedroom is used as a library hosting an extensive collection of Hawaiiana books, a writing desk with garden view, a comfy chair with reading lamp and a sliding glass door leading to large covered deck with garden views. Our paved cul de sac is completely hidden from view by the lush tropical foliage.~~Master bedroom features a king bed with teak bedside tables & a vanity with mirror. There is a full en suite bathroom that has shower w/ a seat. This bathroom has been completely renovated. There is a small lanai off the master with a teak rocking chair that has comfy cushion.~~The second bedroom features queen bed, solid wood nightstands and a sliding glass door leading to the large lanai at front of house.~~Each bedroom has a full size closet with plenty of hangers and a shelf at top. There is a luggage rack in each room that will fit in the closet if you want it out of the way. Ceiling fans in each room. As with most homes in Hawaii, there is no AC but the many screened doors & windows along with ceiling fans & several mobile fans will keep you cool on all but the very hottest of days.~~In the greatroom, enjoy one of 2 couches, one reclines and the other unfolds to a full size bed. There are sheets for this bed & two extra pillows in hall linen closet. Pass-thru window in the kitchen keeps the cook connected with those in the living area and can view the TV from there. A dining nook with table and 4 chairs round out our greatroom. ~~Outside the back door is a two-car covered car-port. One car may park here as the rest of the space is set up with tables & chairs for al fresco dining. There is also a charcoal grill out here & a propane grill can be supplied by request. There may be some charcoal &/or propane left from the last guests. If not, these items are sold nearby. BBQ tools provided.~ On the spacious lawns, you may play our bocce ball (lawn bowling) & cornhole (beanbag toss). For rainy days, we have Giant Jenga and board games to play on the lanai. Or lounge in hammock or rocker with one of the many books from our in-house Hawaiiana library. A neighborhood convenience store is a 5 minute walk. ~~ Our water is from a well maintained in our community so you may drink directly from tap if you like.~~ Altho' our home is spacious, we have a limit of 5 guests. We also have a 3 week maximum stay. This is so our home can be checked on frequently & kept in tip-top shape. Pele showed no mercy & claimed just about all of our furniture along w/ the home so almost everything is new. We did save our artwork & extensive collection of Hawaiiana books along w/ a gorgeous teak bookcase. The artwork & decorations are by various local artists and add to the tropical feel. An entire wall in the library will is dedicated to memories of Mama J's Pond House displaying photos & newspaper articles about loss of the magical Kapoho area.~~ When booking, please be honest about number of people who will be staying . We do charge a nominal $10 per person per night for more than 2 people. Aloha. Please let us know if you have any questions. Jahnys n' Stan

We enjoyed our visit to Big Island of Hawaiii the house we stayed at was very clean, well furnished and lovely. The instructions we received from Jani’s and Stan were excellent for check in and out.
I always have a wondeful time when I stay at MJTH, the hosts are always welcoming and responsive. It's become my home away from home. The outside space is a great place to relax and read one of the many books provided about Hawaii, the inside is spacious, warm and comfortable. It's just a few miles from beautiful ocean views and market and pizza close by in Pahoa.
Beautiful property! Nice quiet neighborhood! Hosts are so nice, and hospitable. Would definitely come back again! Thank y’all so much for an enjoyable stay!
This peaceful and welcoming home eas perfect for our family of 3. I loved all the amazing art, and how it was set up with a few big covered porches for good times in all weather. No A/C was no problem with all the great ventilation, we were comfy. We had the extra joy of touring around Hilo for a day with our amazing hosts, Jahnys and Stan. Cant say enough lovely things about their hospitality and aloha spirit. Hope to come back again!
The owners were kind, and great communicators. The house was a home full of history and culture. We loved every aspect of the stay. There were lots of extras which helped make the stay comfortable.
Our 11th or 12th visit to the island. We enjoyed the house and will add it to our favorites list. Very clean with a relaxing atmosphere. The house location is an ideal hub to Kalapana, Pohoiki beach, Hilo Town and the volcano. Pahoa is 5 minutes away. Personal likes:Privacy on a thought out landscaped property Cool nights for sleeping Waking up early to sitting on the front porch for the bird watching (including the chickens) or going back to sleep in the hammock in the back of the house. Maku’u Farmers Market
Our stay here was nothing short of awesome! The home is so beautifully decorated and everything is well stocked and well thought of in the house. Its a perfect place for a vacation. Will definitely rent again.
The host was very caring and wanted to make sure things were going well for us. It was a great home base to use to explore the island. Unfortunately the brown double recliner couch was not on the property when we were there.
The property was located exactly where I needed, near Pahoa and Hawaiian Beaches/Shores. The owners have added many beautiful personal touches, making for a very comfortable stay. The inside is very nicely appointed and the outside lanais are the best.
I look forward to staying again soon!
Excellent property and great communication with the owners. Major problems with VRBO. Website issues and customer service problems. Would rent here again but maybe go through Air B&B rather than VRBO.
We enjoyed our stay at this house in the country. Host were very much in contact to assure everything was where it was and how it worked. Very quiet clean neighborhood and grounds. We enjoyed all the decor throughout the property.
Beautiful property, had everything we needed. Quiet neighborhood, very nice patio. My family enjoyed our stay. We would have stayed longer if we had more time. Excellent host, very hospitable and great with communication.
We had a great time here, my two girls love the well designed decorations and enjoy the mornings woke up by chickens, and they are looking forward to revisiting this house again.
An older house, very well looked after and clean, in the lovely Pahoa area. A bit out from Hilo, but close enough for easy trips in, and central to most of what the Puna district has to offer. We will be staying again.
This place overall is the place to be if you want to get away and relax. We loved the stay and would recommend to our friends and family. The only downfall was the stuffiness in the day. Other then that its a spiritual place with alot of serenity.

Hi, glad you enjoyed your stay! There are two quietly running portable air-purifying machines in home w/ a stack of new Hepa air-filters in linen closet. Mahalo for bringing to our attention that this fact should be added to our Welcome Email. They certainly help alleviate "stuffiness" during summertime & rainy season extremes in temps.
Mahalo nui Malia!

Born & raised in Whittier, Calif, I moved to Oahu in 1980. My longtime partner Stan was born & raised on Oahu. We moved to Hilo area 2021. Owning our piece of Paradise in Kapoho was possible because of my Mom. We named the house in her honor, Mama J (Joyce)'s Pond House. Pele's fire took Kapoho, on June 5th, 2018. We still cry but we hold dear the beautiful memories of that magical location we were fortunate enough to be a part of for almost 5 years. We are PUNA STRONG. We are back as of November 10th, 2018 ready to share the second incarnation of Mama J's. We enjoy hosting & take pride in once again sharing a clean comfortable home. We are constantly working on safety features, cleanliness & comfort. We are proud to share our home for your getaway.
We want YOU to be as happy as we are when we stay here. We will be just a phone call away to answer questions and do what we can to make your stay more comfortable. In the unlikely event that something was overlooked during cleaning, please call upon arrival & we will make it right via our nearby housekeeper. Aloha, Jahnys and Stan
