Description and History :
174 A Saint Philip Street, Unit 2- The John Bulow House
The land (lot 33) on which this remarkable building was constructed was acquired by John Jochim Bulow in 1834 from the Rowland Rugely (1734-1776) estate. Bulow, a prosperous merchant and planter owned extensive real estate holdings on the peninsula as well as in the upstate and in Mississippi.
Constructed in 1922, this Victorian building, now known as 174 A, showcases exquisite ornate trim, expansive
porches, bay windows, and a vibrant exterior color.
The high ceilings and large windows allow ample natural
light to flood the spacious interiors.
This is not a typical short-term rental; it is not a newly constructed unit in an old neighborhood, nor is it situated on a tiny lot in a questionable or remote area. The old hardwood floors, tall ceilings, original moldings, plasterwork, windows and doors exude a special warmth, character, and charm that that is very difficult to achieve in new construction.
Saint Philip Square :
Saint Philip Square is an award-winning collection of historic buildings meticulously curated to enhance your stay in Charleston. This property is one of seventeen unique rentals. The grounds feature five special outdoor garden areas
with amenities such as fountains, dining areas, fire pits, and covered barbecues. In the evening, this oasis sparkles with outdoor lighting, making it the perfect place for nightcaps after a day of exploring.
Your unit at Saint Philip Square includes a piazza-style private porch overlooking gorgeous, landscaped gardens. With comfortable seating, it’s ideal
for a morning cup of coffee or a restful break between city adventures.

With a large, on-site, walled-in parking lot, our property shares a common border with Charleston’s famous King Street attractions, renowned for shopping, dining, and nightlife. You are as close as is gets to King Street!

Our property provides unrivaled access to King Street’s premier shopping, dining, and entertainment options. Within a two-block radius, you'll find over thirty restaurants offering international cuisines including French, Spanish, Italian, American, Mexican, Japanese, and Greek. This impressive selection doesn't even count the gourmet sandwich shops, coffee bars, pizza spots, oyster bars, wine bars, bakeries, ice creameries, or vibrant entertainment and music venues.
Charleston, like Rome, is unique in its rich historical and cultural offerings. Both are extremely walkable cities. All within a leisurely stroll, you'll discover the historic Charleston Battery, Broad and East Bay Street, Waterfront Park, the Four Corners of Law, historic churches and private homes, the Gibbes Museum of Art, the Charleston Museum, the Aiken-Rhett House, the Charleston Children's Museum, the Charleston Visitors Bureau, the College of Charleston, and the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). All these locations are easily accessible in a thirty-minute walk--no to need move your car from our parking lot.
Don’t feel like walking? Take an Uber or Lyft or try a Pedicab or rickshaw. Charleston Black Cab Limo is excellent for larger groups and you travel in luxury. In addition, the City provides free shuttle bus services utilizing its attractive DASH trolleys.
Want to explore further? We are two minutes by automobile to the main cross-town artery which easily connects to major highways making the Airport, Isle of Palms, Sullivans Island, Folly Beach, Mt. Pleasant, and Ashley River Plantations (Drayton Hall, Middelton Place, and Magnolia Gardens) readily assessable. By automobile, none of these locations exceeds a trip of 25 minutes.

About the host
Hosted by Jamie Molony

We are long time Charlestonians in a 50-year marriage who long ago invested in this beautiful city. After sailing the Atlantic to Europe with our three children and living half the year in different ports, and after discovering the joys of VRBO, we have returned home and are now turning our apartments into short term rentals and sharing wonderful Charleston with fellow travelers. We have a complex known as St Philip Square which has been a huge hit with our guests. We have 1-4 bedroom apartments which make the perfect place for wedding families or family reunions or business retreats.
My husband and I are assisted by our lovely and well loved Jamie who manages to solve any and every problem. Our daughter with her law degree knows all the best places to eat and is ready to help you organize your wedding accommodations. She had rather help us and take care of her children than practice law! One of us can usually solve your problems.
We have had many ventures (business, sales, world travel, psychology and teaching) but are finding designing and renovating our apartments has opened a new world to us and has allowed us to meet new people as hosts rather than as guests ourselves. (We still love to travel and always use VRBO).

Why they chose this property
When we bought these properties in 1996 Charleston was just beginning to open the upper peninsula to restoration. We were brave pioneers. Our son who had the foresight urged us on. Now the area has become the hottest, most vibrant part of town. When we ride down King St at night we are blown away by the excitement, the energy, the joy, the fun. The lower peninsula is lovely but it is very quiet and has little commercial activity. In Cannonborough there are corner grocery stores, boutiques, fantastic restaurants, lively bars. We probably did not really believe our son but he sure was right.
