About this property
Aspen Cabin Near Yellowstone - Horse Rides, Zip Lining, Rafting, Hiking
Nestled in the heart of the Gallatin mountain range, the Stermitz Ranch has been in our family since 1900. We hope that you enjoy the area as much as we do! Our cozy cabin offers the best of both worlds- all of the peace and seclusion for a truly relaxing vacation, yet still located only 12 miles from the North Entrance of Yellowstone National Park and the shops and restaurants of Gardiner. The cabin is located 5 miles from the highway on a gravel/dirt road which is maintained by the county. Then it's an easy 7 highway miles into Gardiner, MT which is the north entrance to Yellowstone. This cabin is surrounded by fir trees, willows, and aspens with amazing mountain views. There are 3 other cabins nearby. Enjoy viewing the elk, deer, coyotes, bald eagles and occasionally moose, wolves, and bears who frequent the vast open spaces that the ranch has to offer. Horses, cows, and chickens also call this breathtaking place home. Spend time befriending the horses and then let them take you on a memorable ride to the top of the mountain! We also have a Zip Line available on the ranch (ages 5 and up) as well as Whitewater Rafting on the nearby Yellowstone River. Activities typically run from Memorial Day to Labor Day, but dates can vary so please double check with us. If we have enough help, sometimes we are able to offer horseback rides into the fall. Please check with us to confirm dates for activities.
Our cabin is the perfect place to relax. The living room boasts large picture windows with incredible views, and a patio door opening to a large covered porch, vaulted ceiling (with beams from a local historic bridge), a large gas fireplace, and comfortable seating. The kitchen is fully equipped with a microwave, refrigerator, dishwasher, range, and all utensils needed to create wonderful meals to be enjoyed inside or out on the covered porch.
The covered porch, which is equipped with a gas grill and outdoor dining set, is the perfect area for barbecues, viewing the abundant wildlife, and watching the incredible sunsets while sipping a glass of wine. Relax and enjoy the cool evening breezes on a hot summer day. The backyard offers lots of room for setting up a badminton game, volleyball, or horseshoes.
The cabin has four bedrooms and three bathrooms. It offers two master suites each with a king-sized bed and a private bath, and two additional rooms. One of the rooms has a bunk bed, and the other room has a bunk bed and an additional queen bed. The bunk rooms share a bathroom. The cabin sleeps 8-10 people.
Unplug! The cabin does not have wifi or cell service, but there is a land line. Also, please note that the cabin does NOT have a washer and dryer, but there is a laundromat in Gardiner, which is 12 miles from the cabin.
Our cabin is located 20 minutes from Yellowstone Park, 30 minutes from Chico Hot Springs, 10 minutes from world-class fishing on the Yellowstone River, and mere minutes from horseback riding with us on the Stermitz Ranch. In the winter you can cross-country ski and snowshoe from the back door. We are also only 2 hours from snowmobiling in the world-renowned Cooke City area. If you prefer a more laid back vacation, you can spend hours sitting on the porch drinking coffee, reading by the fire, viewing wildlife, sketching the amazing scenery, identifying wildflowers and animal tracks, petting the horses and colts, taking a nature hike from your back door, taking a zip line tour or whitewater rafting.
We are sure that your Yellowstone area vacation will be a unique and memorable experience. We look forward to meeting you! Your host, Stacy Stermitz P.S. If this cabin is full, or if you need additional lodging for your group, we also have other cabins available.

About the host
Hosted by Stacy Stermitz
I feel extremely blessed to live in such an amazing place. My late husband and I were fortunate to raise our 4 sons, who are the 5th generation, here on the historic Stermitz Ranch. Rob worked full time a Landscape Architect in Yellowstone. Stacy is a full time mom and manages the vacation rental properties and the horseback rides. We enjoyed working on the renovation projects together, generally on the weekends as time allowed. We have enjoyed the challenges that each building brings, and look forward to the day when all of the original structures have been restored and preserved!
Why they chose this property
After Rob and I both graduated from college and got married, we decided that this was the ideal place to raise our kids. We both shared a deep appreciation for the outdoors and the history of the area, and the proximity to Yellowstone Park makes it ideal. We love the story of how his family came to be here. Rob's great grandfather, Joseph, was born in Slovenia, Austria in 1862 and worked in the coal mines from the age of 9. He later immigrated here from Slovenia with his wife and two children in 1892, following the promise of work in coal mines in Montana. When they arrived he discovered that no work was to be found. Joeseph used his last $10 to buy a gun so that he could hunt in order feed his family. While here, a fire broke out in the Cokedale mines. Joe helped put out the fires and was noticed by the mine boss who asked 'who is that good worker?' Someone explained that it was an immigrant who couldn't find work. The mine boss said 'Put that man to work. Anyone who works that hard for no pay should get a job.' The family, along with the addition of three more children, moved to the ranch in Cinnabar Basin in 1900. They purchased the original homestead of Bob Dixon. Their house consisted of a dirt roofed dugout built by Dixon. Later, when the mine closed in 1910, the lumber was brought from the hospital building in Aldrige to construct a log and lumber house. Rob's grandfather was born here in 1910, and he later attended school at the schoolhouse across from this cabin. In 1935, he married Gladys Elliott, who was one of the teachers at the schoolhouse. Their son, Jim, also attended school there and continued to live on the ranch with his wife Lorayne.
What makes this property unique
This property is great for people who enjoy being outdoors. It is a truly western ranch experience where guests can see what cowboy life is like. Scenic horseback rides, the wildlife, petting the new foals, touring Yellowstone, taking nature hikes, listening to the many mountain songbirds, sketching the wildflowers, are just a few of the many experiences that this property has to offer. We hope that you enjoy it as much as we do!
