Wortham House is a circa 1823 gothic revival carriage house (the oldest in this style in Charleston and the USA) located in the center of a city block behind an 1804 private residence in downtown Charleston. Both properties are on the national Register of Historic Places.
Wortham House has three bedrooms in the second floor each featuring twin beds (one of which can be converted to a king), flat screen TV's and full private bathrooms. The house can accommodate 6 adults. The first floor features a large, tastefully furnished lounge perfect for morning reading with coffee and afternoon cocktails. A powder room is located adjacent to the lounge. A dine in kitchen for six is also adjacent to the lounge when breakfast is served until 9am. In the kitchen there is a refrigerator, an oven and microwave for heating of food brought in to the house. Unfortunately cooking per se is not allowed by the city of Charleston.
Wortham House is surrounded by award winning gardens published in multiple magazines and books. It has been most recently recognized by the Smithsonian Archives of American Gardens and the Garden Conservatory of America's Best twenty-five gardens in the U.S. Space in the garden is available for dining. Off street parking for 2-3 cars is incorporated in the garden.
We do not allow pets, children under the age of 18, or cooking on premise. Although your breakfast is included in your rate. The entire property is non-smoking, including the driveway and garden. Multiple level changes in the old building and the garden make it unsuitable for those who are unsteady on their feet. Also, no rollaway beds provided.
City of Charleston operation permit (required on website) - Residential STR-OP2019-00668

Mrs Johnson is the most gracious and generous hostess one could hope to have the pleasure of meeting. Beautifully curated home and spectacular gardens all within downtown Charleston. Easy walk and/or Uber to all the major attractions and shopping, dining, etc.

Four kind and sensitive guests. They were a pleasure to share our property with each day. I feel that we have new friends and we look forward to seeing them again.
We stayed at the lovely Wortham House for a long weekend and college reunion. Our group consisted of six ladies and we were more than comfortable in the beautiful space. In addition to the well appointed interior, there were beautiful gardens where we enjoyed a glass of wine and conversation. Betsy was the most gracious and helpful host that you could ask for β the epitome of southern hospitality. We would most definitely return in the future.

Our stay in Charleston was so special at the Wortham House Carriage House. Betsy Johnson was the perfect hostess! The house was clean and the breakfast she brought us every morning was a delicious start to the day. The Wortham House Carriage House is Charleston! We just loved it and will definitely be back.
We had an amazing stay! Betsy was incredibly welcoming and made us feel completely at home. Her house is absolutely stunning photos donβt fully capture its beauty. The history behind the property is truly fascinating. I highly recommend staying here; we had such a memorable time. The daily breakfast was a lovely bonus and something we really appreciated

It was a real treat for us to share Wortham House with this group of very kind, thoughtful, and attractive people.I hope they find us again so we can catch up on their travels. Thank you for your very kind words about your visit.
A step back into time with an "old Charleston" ambiance; a lovely garden that is even more picturesque than the photos; and yet, well-maintained and clean furniture, bathroom, and amenities. This a completely and tastefully renovated "carriage house" feels like a home rather than a rental property. The beds are all single beds not conducive to combining into a king, but this was NOT an issue for our group of senior citizens. Our group spent the afternoons in the lovely garden having "sundowners" and soaking up the elegant and relaxing vibe.I can't imagine a better place to stay while visiting Charleston
