Wortham House is a circa 1823 gothic revival carriage house (the oldest in this style in Charleston and the USA) located in the center of a city block behind an 1804 private residence in downtown Charleston. Both properties are on the national Register of Historic Places.
Wortham House has three bedrooms in the second floor each featuring twin beds (one of which can be converted to a king), flat screen TV's and full private bathrooms. The house can accommodate 6 adults. The first floor features a large, tastefully furnished lounge perfect for morning reading with coffee and afternoon cocktails. A powder room is located adjacent to the lounge. A dine in kitchen for six is also adjacent to the lounge when breakfast is served until 9am. In the kitchen there is a refrigerator, an oven and microwave for heating of food brought in to the house. Unfortunately cooking per se is not allowed by the city of Charleston.
Wortham House is surrounded by award winning gardens published in multiple magazines and books. It has been most recently recognized by the Smithsonian Archives of American Gardens and the Garden Conservatory of America's Best twenty-five gardens in the U.S. Space in the garden is available for dining. Off street parking for 2-3 cars is incorporated in the garden.
We do not allow pets, children under the age of 18, or cooking on premise. Although your breakfast is included in your rate. The entire property is non-smoking, including the driveway and garden. Multiple level changes in the old building and the garden make it unsuitable for those who are unsteady on their feet. Also, no rollaway beds provided.

We had an amazing stay! Betsy was incredibly welcoming and made us feel completely at home. Her house is absolutely stunning photos don’t fully capture its beauty. The history behind the property is truly fascinating. I highly recommend staying here; we had such a memorable time. The daily breakfast was a lovely bonus and something we really appreciated
We had a delightful stay at this beautiful property. Betsy was so sweet and made delicious breakfasts each day. She was very accommodating with a food allergy restriction.
We absolutely loved our stay. The home and gardens are exactly as described and shown in photos. The daily breakfast was amazing and made our trip so easy. We were a group of 6 for a girls birthday weekend and it was a perfect home for us. We would stay here again!
Betsy went Above and Beyond providing thoughtful touches and amazing hospitality. The gardens and home were absolutely gorgeous. We hope to have an opportunity to visit Charleston again so we can return to this lovely home.
We came to Charleston for a family wedding with our 3 adult children. The wedding was great but the experience at Wortham house made our entire trip one of the most memorable we have had. Every detail from the Southern hospitality to the Lucious gardens and charming antiques made our trip unforgettable. Our hostess Betsy has not missed a detail in supplying the home and made us all feel very comfortable.
The moment we pulled up to the driveway.. we were greeted by our gracious host, Betsy! She was so incredibly sweet and full of information. She showed us around the grounds and gave us a brief history about the property.. how she and her husband transformed it into a storybook abode. The Carriage house and garden were so inviting down to the last detail. We loved it so much.. our only regret was that we didn’t spend more time there. We can’t wait to go back!!!!
From the minute we set foot on the beautiful Wortham House property, Betsy, our fun, informative, and charming host made sure that everything was above and beyond our expectation(s). She was waiting for us as we arrived and welcomed us to her beyond spectacular home and gardens. Pictures do not do the house or the gardens justice. Her home is decorated with beautiful antique furnishings. We enjoyed sitting in the living room with spectacular views of the gardens as well as congregating around the kitchen table in the morning over leisurely poured cups of coffee. Betsy’s home is absolutely spotless and it is obvious how she has earned her moniker of premiere host. It was our first visit to Charleston and it won’t be our last.
Our stay at Wortham House was fabulous. The accommodations were beautiful and comfortable, the food was outstanding and the host was delightful. Will always be our Charleston home away from home.
From the moment we decided to come to Betsy’s home for our girl’s weekend to our arrival, it was truly a wonderful experience. The gardens, home itself, cleanliness of everything, full breakfasts and willingness to adapt to my one friend’s dietary needs and to share insights about the home and Charleston, was above and beyond. The location is perfect — loved being in a neighborhood, yet close enough to walk to King Street and more. We all would come back in a heart beat, and absolutely stay here again. This historical Carriage home is a gem and Betsy is an absolute doll! So glad we came. Thank YOU Betsy!!!
Very comfortable stay. Beautiful gardens. Great location...easy to walk to all the sites in Charleston. Betsy was fantastic host. Really enjoyed the breakfasts she served. Highly recommend staying at the carriage house.
From the moment we arrived, we were surrounded by beauty outside in the gardens and inside the lovely home. Ms. Betsy is a wonderful host and made us feel very welcomed, and we enjoyed visiting with her. The house, bedrooms and accommodations are very comfortable.
We had a wonderful stay at the Wortham house. Betsy brought a wonderful breakfast every morning and made sure we had everything we needed. She even helped with suggestions on activities, as this was our first trip to Charleston. We would definitely recommend this property! Betsy will make you feel like family.
My friends and I wanted to experience the southern charm and history Charleston for a girls weekend. We are so glad we stayed at the Wortham House as a part of that experience! The house was beautiful and spacious, the gardens were breathtaking and Ms. Betsy was the perfect accommodating host. We especially enjoyed the breakfast provided. It was the perfect weekend and we only wished we had been able to stay longer!
My entire family enjoyed this magical home! Everything was just lovely including Betsy. She made everything so easy for us and made us feel so welcome. We all felt sad leaving this amazing property. We hope to visit again!
Wortham Carriage House is exactly as you see it online! Beautiful historic Carriage House that does not disappoint. The "gardens" are absolutely stunning reflecting the award winning recognition they have received over the years. The house is exquisite...only to be matched by the hospitality and kindness of the Owner who went over and above to accommodate all of our wishes to make our stay more comfortable...Betsy Johnson! A true Charleston gem! Her hand delivered breakfast in the morning was a southern treat; matched only by her charm and stories that we will all remember! Our stay was for a family Girl's trip and we could not have chosen a better place to gather for the weekend!Thank you Betsy for all your extra care and kindness!Warmest Cheryl, Gail and Girls [Savannah, Virginia, OBX and Atlanta represented]!
This was the most amazing experience. Betsy and Gene are lovely and thoughtful hosts and the Woltham House and grounds are truly lovely. I hope to visit again in the future.
The property was beautiful & very peaceful. It’s close enough to walk to many activities & dining, but you feel like you have privacy in the neighborhood. Betsy was a charming hostess & cooks delicious breakfasts. There were 5 of us on a girls trip & we all loved staying there. Highly recommended.
