Ciao, I’m Debbie
Originally from New Zealand, I am a flying Kiwi who has always strived to live by the premise: ‘Live an ordinary life in an extra-ordinary way.’
I am a journalist who has specialised in all aspects of travel writing - spa, food, lifestyle - and of course wine… I have contributed articles and photography to publications around the world.
The road is a treasure hunt where the people, the adventure, the food & wine and always the odd bit of shopping are the holy grail. I believe that travel - being an Expat - is about finding your way and trusting the signs. It is about dreams that collude with strange universal energies and have unexpected results. Sometimes it is about believing in yourself even when there is no obvious reason to continue to do so!
On the road I have found incredible luxury, exotic people and places and lifelong friends. I have found in equal measure, poverty, injustice and pain. The road gives and the road takes away but it never stops teaching…

Why they chose this property
With the vivid recall of a lovelorn teenager; I remember when the day finally came. I wasn’t supposed to be there. Winter had started to ride the wind, gathering yellow leaves and velocity as it passed over the sunburnt heads of farmers harvesting grapes and olives. I thought I had seen every converted windmill and farmhouse for sale during that side of Hadrian’s wall during the summer. But, somehow, I was back for ‘one last look’. Winding up and down the sweet rolling hills on the border of Umbria and Tuscany, with Real Estate agents, Titti and Francesca, it was easy to forget I was searching for something. So that when I finally found it, ironically, it was a surprise. We were driving along an ancient Etruscan trade route now called Via Garibaldi Smack-bam in the middle of wine-land in between Lake Trasimeno and Lake Chiusi. We entered a hamlet called Gioiella sunbathing on a hilltop between Montepulciano (famed for its Vino Nobile) and Cortona (famed for being Under the Tuscan Sun). The village was lined with the most colourful houses I had seen in Umbria, pink and yellow and grey-blue. Francesca did a sharp left and pulled into a narrow driveway tucked behind Chiesa di San Lorenzo, the village church. And there it stood in ‘Piazza Piccola’, a mere skip to the local Bar. Its higgledy-piggledy brickwork glowed warmly in the Autumn sun. The shuttered windows and tall frontage gave off and aura of centuries of refuge. Then, like finding Narnia through the wardrobe, gobsmacking views of Tuscany and the Valdichiana waited on the other side. That’s when I knew: I had found the one.
Depending on who you ask, Gioiella means ‘little treasure’ or ‘slice of joy’. There is also a legend that Gioiella was named after a beautiful innkeeper who lived in the village. It all sums it up perfectly. I was hooked.

What makes this property unique
Villa Gioiella is a three-story, late Renaissance holiday home in a remarkably still-secret spot on the Umbria Tuscany Border. It is the ideal location to enjoy all the culture, history, art, food, wine and fun that Italy has to offer.
The villa is a spacious and enchanting - perfect for friends and family. High ceilings, chestnut-beams and French-doors that allow an amazing amount of light to pour in with cooling breezes and views of the Tuscan countryside. Balconies on every floor provide an ideal spot to enjoy the changing kaleidoscope of the day as it moves over the landscape of Montepulciano, Cortona and Chianciano Terme in Tuscany.
Experience the warmth and convenience of village life at Gioiella's local bar, Bar Ruota. Here you can sip your morning coffee, have an aperitivo, pizza and plan trips to historic sights, the white beaches and islands of Lake Trasimeno and local restaurants offering many mouthwatering local treats. The village shops are just a few steps away.
There is a large garden with an olive grove and Roberto the gardener shares fresh seasonal vegetables.
Maid service, babysitting and a personal chef (for personalized group classes and/or home cooking) are available on request. There are many vineyards, hilltop towns, natural hot springs, Etruscan remains, museums, art galleries, Lake Trasimeno, the beaches of Lake Trasimeno and islands, restaurants, food artisans, farmer’s markets and antique markets to explore.
