'Hunky Dory' is a spacious and light-filled fully equipped five bedroom home with decor and furnishings inspired by its history and Nantucket Island. Built in 1841 by mariner Joseph Lewis and recently beautifully renovated, 'Hunky Dory' is situated on a very quiet narrow lane near the working, 18th-century windmill. Located in the downtown historic district, this home is a short walk past sea captains' mansions to the heart of Nantucket town's shops and restaurants. A private enclosed backyard is beautifully landscaped with hydrangeas, lilies, and Roses of Sharon and features an enclosed outdoor hot water shower. The front of the house has hydrangeas, roses and and flowering window boxes. Hunky Dory is as charming outside as it is inside. The home is immaculate and has all hardwood floors, original artwork/photographs and beautiful Claire Murray rugs. Its central location to town and grocery stores, all a 10 minute walk from the house, make it perfect for those who do not need to bring or rent a vehicle. For those who choose to have a vehicle, the seashell driveway provides space for 2 SUVs to park side by side. My home is owner operated and not owned by an impersonal professional management real estate company, so I am available 24/7, as is my on island professional caretaking company.. Unique features are:

July and August usually requires a minimum seven night stay. Shorter stays are welcome during all other months or if available during the summer. The owner is extremely responsive and happy to help with recommendations regarding transportation or suggested activities and help planning your trip. The property is owner operated with a on island professional caretaking company and on island cleaning company to handle any issues which arise during your stay. No events such as weddings, or parties exceeding the number of tenants are allowed to be held on the premises. The maximum number of vehicles allowed is two vehicles, which must be parked in the driveway. If there is an additional vehicle, it must only be parked in a paid lot.

We loved our weekend on Nantucket. The house was easily accessible to Downtown which is where we spent most of our time. We did Uber one day to the Cisco Brewery which was great too! The house was very very clean and Kathleen was easy to contact before the stay for different questions that came up. I would stay at this rental again!

We had a wonderful stay at Hunky Dory! Everything is as advertised online and Kathleen is super easy to work with. The house is very clean, organized, and has everything you need to have a comfortable, relaxing, and fun vacation! The outdoor shower experience is not to be missed while on Nantucket! Our stay at the Hunky Dory was fantastic! It felt like the perfect blend of having our own charming island home and being on a relaxing vacation. The place was comfortable, clean, and charming. The outdoor shower and private yard were all my Nantucket dreams come true. The location was perfect – close enough to explore everything by foot or bike, but also quiet and peaceful. Relaxing week at The Honky Dory!!

I highly recommend Kathleen's place! I went to Nantucket for a week with my husband, 2 daughters and some of their friends. Kathleen's cottage is so comfortable and relaxing. She has everything you would need. The house is very roomy and quiet in a great section of the island. My teenage daughters could easily walk into town with their friends. We booked the same week for next year before we even left the island! Kathleen is very responsive and kind. Highly recommend this gem of a place.

Perfect getaway

This was a darling comfortable cottage near town. It was so nice for my daughters and I. The upstairs ceilings were a bit of a challenge for my tall daughters, but they didn’t mind. I’m not used to recycling so I was nervous about doing it wrong and getting a fine, but I think we figured it out. Although it is easier to stay in a hotel-you don’t have to wash towels or pay an extra fee-we really loved being together in an adorable cottage. Nantucket is so charming and staying in a cottage just added to the romance of the town. Wonderful host!

Family vacation

We were pleased with location of the home. Walking distance to town. Downtown Nantucket is beautiful with plenty to do. We also rented a car at Young’s Bike Shop and really enjoyed exploring the island. The home was nice with a great private outdoor space. The downstairs bedroom is nice with own bathroom, which is the only bathroom downstairs. The bedrooms upstairs with queen and double beds are small, but ok. The twin beds are just outside the doors to the other bedrooms and a bit awkward. Only 1 small bathroom upstairs. Actual beds were not very comfortable. The family room area was a nice size and the kitchen was also big enough for our group to gather.

Family fun at Hunky Dory!

Just got back from a great week at Kathleen’s property Hunky Dory!! First of all Kathleen’s communication is top notch. No question went unanswered and very quick to respond! I was a little nervous about the recycling rules on Nantucket, LOL but Kathleen walked us through it. You can tell this property is her baby and she has put a lot of love and care into it. It is adorable inside with beautiful grounds, flowers and outdoor seating. A few of us worked throughout the vacation and wifi is excellent downstairs. There was everything you need to cook. She has lots of towels, facecloths, beach towels, chairs, back up light bulbs and a full washer dryer! Air conditioners everywhere if hot outside. The home is older with low ceilings so if you are a tall family you will need to duck your head a bit upstairs. The stairs to second floor are steep so I suggest putting all the younger folk up there. I kept my 80 yo dad downstairs in king bed with bathroom close by. Hunky Dory is about a 10-15 min walk to town depending on how fast you walk. 5 min by bike. Pay attention to how Kathleen tells you to get to house as there is less traffic that way. We did not and were surprised at how fast cars go by pedestrians and roads are narrow. It is also safer by bike the way she tells you. Kathleen gives you tons of suggestions for the island and we hit most of them. On the boat over people were shocked we had made no reservations for restaurants before we left. But honestly, you can get in nearly anywhere for lunch including “Galley Beach”. Beautiful! Dinner FORGET IT, but if you go to restaurants at 4 or 5 you may be able to get in. Gaslight and Town were yummy. Most places were super nice but some very snobby and laughed when we tried to get in, “American Seasons”. We went to “Rose and a Crown” 5 times as you can walk right in anytime and eat outside under umbrellas. Very good food too!. Also, Hunky Dory is close to bus stops but to go to further distance locations, “Cisco breweries” and “Mataket” you will need to take bus downtown first. Get a week pass for $30 and ride anywhere. The stop and shop is a 5 min bike ride and we went there quite often for supplies. Also, at end of week when my dad got a bit tired of walking, NO problem getting an Uber. Thank you Kathleen for a great experience on our first visit to Nantucket! I would highly recommend Kathleen’s home!

The best Christmas Stroll ever

From start to finish everything was perfect. The host Kathleen was amazingly helpful and responsive with all of our many questions she started getting getting about 11 months before our stay. The property is beautiful, comfortable, and in a perfect location. Hoping to come back to Nantucket real soon and stay here again. The house has plenty of room to spread out and is so comfortably and attractively furnished. We walked most everywhere. I grew up north of Boston but live in the South. I am a responsive home owner committed to making sure my guests enjoy my home and the island as much as I do. I travel to the island frequently to enjoy and check on "Hunky Dory". I have a caretaking company to handle any issues that may arise during your stay. I am easy to reach by cell phone, text or email if there are any questions or issues that arise not covered by the house instructions. I have been a member of the Chamber of Commerce since 2003 when I first began renting out "Hunky Dory". I love to sail, kayak, bike and eat great food when I am on island. I also surf at Cisco beach and hope to get better each year.

Why they chose this property

I had looked for the perfect Nantucket home for almost two years when I found "Hunky Dory". It was love at first sight even before I had stepped inside. It was the house I dreamed of finding, historic, light filled and the perfect location. Many island owners have quarter boards with their house's name carved in wood. A book about the history and meaning of different Nantucket quarterboards was written a few years ago. My quarter board has its name and carvings of Brant Point and Sankaty Light, along with island flowers. I chose the name because when I am at the house enjoying family or friends, everything really is hunky dory. I loved vacationing on the island for years before I bought "Hunky Dory." I wanted a home close enough to downtown to easily walk there, especially in the summer when it is very difficult to find parking. I also wanted to be close to the Surfside bike path and the harbor to kayak. Having a home large enough to enjoy with my family and friends, but with history, was very important. I wanted a home with character that made me feel very connected to the island's history. Myself and my VRBO guests have celebrated many happy occasions and made many cherished memories at "Hunky Dory." I love hearing what history my guests have with the island or why they will be visiting. I also love to hear from first time island visitors about how they fell in love with my house and the island. I really enjoy spending more time there during the different seasons and enjoying the various events such as Daffodil Festival weekend, Wine Festival weekend, Nantucket Film Festival week, the Fourth of July events, Boston Pops on the Beach, the Halloween parade, the Cold Turkey Plunge and Christmas tree lighting over Thanksgiving week, and of course the beloved Christmas Stroll.

What makes this property unique

"Hunky Dory" has an enclosed large grass backyard compared to many homes in the historic district. Mature landscaping surrounds the yard/patio. On Nantucket it is more fun to be outside for meals during warm weather, so I have picnic table seating for 11 and a children's picnic table. Having enough room and a safe enclosed area for children to play or adults to have a quiet spot to read or relax in the hammock is a wonderful benefit of this home. When you have to be inside, the home has many windows filling it with natural light. The narrow lane the house is situated on is quiet and residential. The Surfside beach bike path is at the top of the street. The Cisco brewery/beach bike path and Madaket bike paths are a 5-10 minute bike ride from the house.. After the beach or biking, nothing beats a warm shower outside in the private enclosed outdoor shower. At night you can even enjoy a hot shower under the stars. I love the outdoor shower so much I had one built at my home in the South, which I enjoy year round. My guests love the large kitchen to hang out or or eat in since it comfortably seats 11 people. The dining room table extends to seat 11 as well. Two wonderful historic sites, the Old Mill and the second oldest African American Meeting House are just a 3 minute walk from the house. One of the many ways to walk downtown is on a sidewalk passing gorgeous mansions and flowers. Or you can explore the side streets to get to Main Street as well, so you can walk a different way for your entire stay, each as beautiful as the next. It is a 10 minute walk to the harbor beach where you can rent a kayak or paddleboard or have Sayles Seafood cook lobsters or grilled/fried seafood to eat there or take back to the house. Or purchase freshly caught fish there to grill on the Weber gas or charcoal grills. The location is perfect for short stays when you do not want to take a car over or rent a car. Both grocery stores and the island wide shuttle are a 10 minute walk away.
