COMPLETE COVID-19 CLEANING
Luxuriate in the serene elegance of the Above the Clouds Main House -- Located at the end of a quarter-mile-long driveway that passes through birch and hemlock woods you'll find yourself perched at the top of the world overlooking a glorious 180+degree mountain vista. Other than the adjacent Above the Clouds Guesthouse (located across the driveway but placed so both homes have privacy), the only signs of life are lights twinkling across the valley at night and the wildlife that shares the land.
Pamper yourself in the spa-like showers (one with 5 shower heads!), 2-person jacuzzi, or outdoor hot tub facing majestic western Mad River Valley views. Prepare a gourmet meal in a cook’s kitchen outfitted with modern appliances and a gas grill on the side patio. Relax in a unique hammock chair while watching a wood fire in the fireplace; stroll through the extensive gardens; take a nap in a hammock in the trees; eat blueberries fresh off the bush; relax on the deck at sunset while sipping wine and watching hummingbirds wiz by...
Though Above the Clouds is close to many of Vermont’s premier tourist destinations, many find hibernating in it's mountain top beauty all they need!
Huge windows with stunning views grace every room in this 2500+ s.f. house and make the boundaries between the glorious outdoors and sumptuous indoors hard detect. With two sleeping wings (each with an en-suite, luxurious bathroom), two couples or a family of five can visit by day yet have complete privacy at night. Two more people can sleep in the cozy upper living room on a queen bed that pulls out of the leather sofa. Every room in the house is enhanced by luxurious fixings like: cherry bedroom furnishings, sheepskin rugs, TempurPedic mattresses, natural fiber throws, leather furnishings, down blankets and pillows, etc.
The kitchen is a chef’s dream with a gas range, huge pantry decked out with many helpful appliances, generous one-of-a-kind granite counters, an array of spices. The delectables you create can be eaten on the patio table that seats up to 8, in the dining room on the table that can seat up to 10, or in the cozy octagonal breakfast nook. Perhaps the best part is that there is an amazing view from every seat in the house.
For your entertainment, the 65" Samsung The Frame smart TV displays photos (most of which are nature shots that were taken by Bob) when not in use has access to most major streaming services as well as Samsung's television channels. There is a Bose bluetooth speaker for your digital music. For some old-fashioned fun, there is a generous store of books, puzzles, and board games.
The gardens are as glorious as the inside of the house. You'll want to wander and enjoy the extensive perennial gardens, relax by the frog pond with fountain, play games on the lawns, or head off to hike on our 20 acres and adjacent trails.
Both houses are powered by the sun and we offer a complimentary Level 2 EV charging station. Heated garage space available for bookings of one month or more.
Up to 2 dogs may be permitted. Prior approval and a $250 pet cleaning fee are required.
*Note: Some of the furniture and art has changed from what is in the pictures of the living room and dinning room. Everything is still luxurious! Just a note as we work to update our listing photos.
The Above the Clouds Guesthouse can also be rented on a stand-alone basis or you can rent both homes to use for larger groups. For more information about the guesthouse, see the VRBO listing for Dramatic Views at the Above the Clouds Guesthouse. You can also find links to these listings by clicking my host picture.
Please note that there are often guests staying at the guesthouse and ask that their space and peaceful experiences is respected by observing quiet hours from 10 PM until 8 AM). The houses are oriented in different directions, so this is an easier thing to do.

About the host
Hosted by Marianne Barton

Marianne and Bob have spent the last 10 years living in Moretown, VT where they love to garden, walk the dogs, canoe, kayak, hike, bike, snowshoe, take photos, and host community gatherings in their home. They are mostly-retired environmental professionals and truly enjoy meeting new people. They delight in eating good organic food and shopping at the local farmer’s market in Waitsfield in the summer.
They are both perpetual optimists and consider themselves practical visionaries as they were mostly cutting-edge social entrepreneurs during their working lives. As hosts they’ve enjoyed meeting many of their guests. During that time they also do their best to guide guests to the places, restaurants, and activities Vermont has to offer.
Connor and Indigo have spent the last 20 years calling Vermont their second-home, spending their winters on the slopes and summers in the rivers and on the trails. They’re now helping manage the property from their home-base in Boston before they make Vermont their full-time home in the years ahead!

Why they chose this property
After decades of living in southern Vermont, Bob and I decided to move to the heart of the Mad River Valley because it's profound beauty and access to nature made our hearts sing. We went to see at least 60 houses before finding this one and knew this was the one as soon as we stopped at the end of the driveway (you'll understand why when you get here).
What makes this property unique
You can see four of Vermont's highest peaks from the sweeping 180-degree of the Mad River Valley. In fact, many Vermonters say ours is the most beautiful view they have ever seen. Where there aren't mountains there are gorgeous rock outcroppings, beautiful gardens, gentle forests, and magnificent stars (the Milky Way shines its magic on all clear nights and sometimes the northern lights bewitch the sky).
