A sanctuary, an oasis, a one of a kind experience communing with nature while lounging in civilized splendor—all are apt descriptions of this New York architect designed beach house on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay. Guests enjoy stunning waterfront views from a finished floor height of 36 feet. The Eastern Shore of Virginia is famous for its flat tidewaters, but this property is perched amongst unusual relic Sandhills, complete with pines, gum trees and vast sea and sunset vistas.
The space In addition to having a view of its own private beach, this home is warm, modern, unpretentious and it just WORKS. One very generously sized great room with a barrel vault ceiling serves as the public space, while three bedrooms and a study await your presence in the more private two story section. Cook in the gourmet kitchen with a French stove and TWO dishwashers. Watch movies on the 66” television attached to a rolling media cart which can be moved and angled in any direction. Lounge on the deck overlooking the bay and enjoy unparalleled western views. In the evenings, skinny dip (I’m not sure this is legal but who would ever know?) in divine summer salt water temperatures at your private beach. Heaven!
Details—guests have access to the entire space minus a couple of owner’s closets. There is a desk in the great room plus an office upstairs in the master area, perfect for remote working. The internet service is surprisingly fast and reliable.
The kitchen and cooking: • If you like Nespresso products, bring some capsules for coffee to use in the Nespresso machine. Otherwise try the French press or drip coffeemaker, or enjoy the electric tea kettle. • Some basic spices and oils are stocked and rosemary grows in the yard, but you’ll want to supplement with your favorites. • The gas stove has both a gas and electric oven and five burners. • The fridge/freezer is German - it produces adequate but not copious amounts of ice. If you love ice in all your drinks, it might be a good idea to bring a bag with you. • As mentioned elsewhere, there are two dishwashers. Praise be to God. • A Weber charcoal grill is available outside for grilling.
The bedrooms and baths: • The master (king) bedroom contains an en-suite bath with a deep tub, mosaic floor, separate shower and WC, plus a large TV in front of the bed. • The second (Queen) bedroom facing the water also has en suite bathroom with a tub/shower combo and marble mosaic floor and walls. • The third (king) bedroom uses a full bath in the main hall outside the doorway. All bedrooms have ceiling fans.
Outside: • Is an outdoor shower 👍🏽. • There is a garden hose to use for washing sand off feet • There are raccoon proof (so far) containers for trash • Is where the charcoal grill lives. • Because we are right on the bay and not on a creek, we rarely get jellyfish. • Biting insects are also scarce. • Wildlife abounds! Deer, foxes, woodpeckers, pelicans, and songbirds act like they’re on TV.
Guest access Guests have access to the entire home and its private beach down a clamshell path.

The house is beautiful, spacious and inviting. When I saw the pictures online, I knew I wanted to stay here. It is a perfect place to get away and relax.
Fun, restful, joyful, beautiful, rejuvenating! We love this house, property and location. Everyone throughly enjoyed themselves. Couldn’t have asked for a better getaway.

Todd and his group are the best guests ever!!! Love having them, they are welcome back any time!
This is an amazing place to stay. Beautiful location in the woods and on the beach.
Beautiful secluded getaway with amazing beach access. We enjoyed long walks on the beach into a neighboring conservancy, took a polar bear plunge (February visit), and warmed up in front of a roaring fire inside this stunning home. The kitchen is fully appointed. The house was spotless when we arrived, the beds were made and incredibly comfortable, and we were able to hit the ground running when we arrived. So thankful that we were able to slip away to this oasis for a few days. We will most certainly continue to rent this home. We’ve stayed on the Eastern Shore a number of times over the years and there is neither a nicer beach to be had nor a more unique and wonderful home to occupy.

Wow you are too generous! Thanks for being such gracious guests. Btw, my housekeeper loves you.
Incredible home, amazing views, quiet, easy drive in to Cape Charles. I need the option to give more than 5 stars. Perfect long weekend getaway for our family ( kids ages 17 and 20). We hope to go back!
Sarah was a dream to work with and provided everything you could ever even think to need. The house is a work of art, filled with works of art, with a view like something out of a painting. Very very private and serene. We could sit on that deck All. Day. Long.
We had a wonderful stay! The home is beautiful and the beach and views are magical! Great location, easy to get to Cape Charles and surrounding attractions. Sara was very a joy to communicate with, very responsive.
Thanks for sharing your beautiful home!
A beautiful house in a beautiful setting. Close to Cape Charles with easy access to restaurants and a grocery store. Bedrooms and bathrooms were very comfortable and clean, with high quality bedding. Kitchen is well-appointed. We stayed for Thanksgiving and cooking for a group was a breeze. Be aware that the double-oven configuration means each oven is considerably smaller than a standard 30" unit typical of U.S. homes. Large glass doors were a wee bit drafty, due largely to 20-30 mph winds on the first two nights. Very slight downgrade on cleanliness as the kitchen floors could have used a mopping, and some of the countertops were also needing a wipe-down (we would have rated the overall cleanliness 4.75 stars if that was an option). Owner was very nice and responsive. Overall a very high quality property in a wonderful setting with a conscientious owner. Would definitely stay there again and would recommend it to friends and family.
This house was a dream come true. Breathtakingly beautiful, peaceful, private beach, most thoughtful host, showers where water hits from every possible direction, orchids and mosaics. Cried when we left. So thankful to have had this indelible experience. Thank you, Sara.

About the host

I am a serial entrepreneur who splits time between the Eastern Shore of Virginia and Berkeley, California. See mosaic studio NewRavenna.com (founder) and LocalScoop.com (founder). After I sold New Ravenna I began to spend a fair bit of time on the west coast where my kids live and now I get the best of both worlds-- the serenity of this home, and the stimulation of the Bay area.
Why they chose this property
I commissioned this house about 13 years ago-- it was a huge and challenging project! Building a house on a sand dune seemed like a Biblical "don't" many times during the construction process, but it turned into a wonderful modern oasis in the woods facing a beach. Over the years, I've enjoyed furnishing it with many items dragged back from far-flung places.
What makes this property unique
The kitchen is fabulous, it's really a cook's house. The views are phenomenal. It's a perfect place for a corporate retreat or family vacation. The beach is fairly calm so it's great for kids. The close-by town of Cape Charles seems like Mayberry with a harbor. It's super quaint and adorable.
