Welcome to the Smalls-Nash Cottage, a charming 750 square foot historic home built by local hero Robert Smalls in 1890. The house is located in the heart of the Old Point neighborhood with moss-draped trees and rich history around every corner.
Built by Smalls in the backyard of the big Robert Smalls house, the original footprint was two rooms before it doubled in size in the early 1900s and is the floor plan you see today.
The Smalls-Nash Cottage remained in the Smalls family until 2006, and under keeping of the Beaufort Historic Foundation until 2020. Lovingly restored with modern amenities and comforts, the house has original preserved features including decorative double fireplaces with mantles and flooring.
The one bedroom, one bathroom property highlights include a clawfoot tub with shower, a pull-out couch in the library for additional visitors and a tucked away, lush backyard with porch for relaxing in your own private oasis.
The kitchen is fully outfitted with flatware, cookware, refrigerator with freezer, full size oven and a four burner electric cooktop. The house has private WiFi and Smart TV in the library, along with a desk in the living room for any remote workers. The backyard has seating for outdoor dinners, as well as a charcoal grill and there’s a Samsung washer-dryer in the shed out back.
You’re an 8 minute stroll from downtown Beaufort’s restaurants, galleries, shopping and waterfront park and only a 25 minute drive to the pristine beaches of Hunting Island State Park (the house has a car pass). And if you’re feeling extra adventurous, the culinary delights and sights of Charleston and Savannah are both a little over an hour away.

I highly recommend this cottage! Having stayed at other rentals in Beaufort, I can say without hesitation that Mary Whit’s cottage is the best. You can’t ask for a better location - such a peaceful neighborhood yet an easy walk to all of the cute shops and restaurants in downtown Beaufort.I often find that antique homes don’t feel clean - I was so impressed that this cottage was spotless. So much charm and character….if the cottage is available - book it!
We spent the month of March at this historic home and it was pure delight! The location cannot be beat — a quiet, beautiful and friendly neighborhood just minutes away from downtown shops and restaurants. The cottage had everything we needed and the back yard was a bonus. Take advantage of the car pass provided by the host and head out to Hunting Island State Park for great beach walking and bird watching. Mary Whit is incredibly welcoming and helpful with terrific recommendations for making the most of your visit.
Highly recommend staying here. House was beautifully decorated and warm and cozy. Just perfect for the two of us. The back yard was gorgeous. Great little porch to enjoy coffee or cocktails while listening to the birds. The bed was incredibly comfortable. neighborhood was quiet and everyone was so friendly. Walking distance to downtown, waterfront and college campus. Wonderful historic town. Mary Whit was accommodating and attentive to our needs with so many recommendations of things to do. Loved our time here.

Great location.
Bath supplies were limited. Stove top worked, but burners were difficult and oven did not work. Kitchen seating was primitive. Bathtub/shower entrance and exit would not be easy for elderly. Washer/dryer worked very well and was a nice extra. Pantry was well stocked. Neighborhood was quiet and close to downtown (.6 mile walk)

Thanks for the note! It's always helpful for others to understand how staying in a historic cottage has its quirks. The oven and burners have been checked and are in working order. As always, we're available via phone, text or VRBO messaging to help solve any questions in real time. We've had many return visitors to the Smalls-Nash Cottage and hope to see you again!
Perfect little house in the Old Point. Close to all the amenities of downtown. Great for two people Really enjoyed our stay. Mary Whit was easy to contact and responded to all our needs.
