Centrally Located near everything the Black Hills has to offer! Open year round!
This cabin is 1 of 13 on our Campfire Cabins property. Our cabins are centrally located to everything the Black Hills has to offer! We are just 3 miles from Pactola Lake, located along Hwy 385. We call this cabin our "Family Cabin"; it is a spacious1500sq ft home with an open kitchen/living room area, large dining table, laundry room, garage, and 2 porches with amazing views! It is naturally well lit, has 3 bedrooms, and 2 bathrooms. It sits up on a hill behind our other 12 cabins, so you will travel up a fairly steep gravel driveway to reach this cabin. The cabin is its' own private oasis, surrounded on all 4 sides by mature trees. It is modern with tasteful finishes, high quality bedding, and stocked for your convenience. This cabin also has outdoor seating, a propane grill, and yard games & toys for the kiddos. Our cabins and site are clean and well maintained. The hosts (Al & Sarah Sutton) are friendly, hospitable, and live on site to be available for your needs and questions.
***PLEASE NOTE: the basement level of this Family Cabin is used by the Sutton's between the hours of 11am to 4pm for laundry several times each week. We will NOT enter the main living area (where guests have access to) during your stay, we will use the separate basement entrance behind the cabin. There are 2 locked doors at both the top and bottom of the staircase separating both levels.
Spend your days visiting historic landmarks, quaint Hills towns, or parks and lakes, then come back to your cabin to rest and relax on one of two porches or down by our large campfire site. As you sit out and enjoy the views you can see the stars with no light pollution. Depending on the time of the year you can hear the owls calling to one another, hear the singing of the coyotes, the bugling of the elk, or listen to the turkey as they get ready to roost. Our cabins help you to enjoy the action packed days of your vacation even more by giving you a place to come and relax and enjoy nature at the end of your day with your family.
We are centrally located, within 45 minutes or less of nearly all that the Hills have to offer such as Mt. Rushmore, Custer State Park, Deadwood and Sturgis. This location is also perfect for year round seasonal activities such as boating, fun at the lakes, hunting and fishing, skiing, hiking trails, rock climbing, geocashing, ATV and snowmobiling.
We built and have operated our 12 small cabins for the past 8 years. This cabin is a new addition, and we look forward to hosting you and your family!
*This cabin is NON-SMOKING and PET-FREE. *Limited trailer parking available in front of the cabin; there is room to park trailers and boats at the bottom of the driveway in our overflow parking area.

Very nice and clean. The house is spacious and comfortable. Highly recommend.
Lovely cabin and was just as described. Clean, comfortable and with nice touches here and there. Great location midway between the north and south offerings of the Black Hills and close to Rapid City as well. Owners have thoughtfully considered what a family might need on a trip. It was great to be able to come back and relax after fun in the Black Hills. Hosts were very communicative. We will definitely be back.
We had an excellent stay at Campfire Cabins. The Family Cabin was the right size for our family of 5 with lots of wiggle room. It was about an hour /1 drive to several National Parks, Custer State Park, and many other attractions. Our down time in the cabin was relaxing after long days of hiking and seeing the sites. Sarah was very attentive and quick with all communications. Very easy to work with. We've already recommended it to another family traveling out to South Dakota! If we plan to come back to the area, we definitely would stay here again.
This is a great place to stay and easy to get to. It is very close to a variety of things. We were there to use the ATV trails. Parking not an issue. There was great semi friendly animals (cats, rabbits and turkeys) and yards games that we enjoyed in evening. The house is very clean and brand new looking inside. Host contacted to make sure we had everything we needed. Definitely will enjoy staying again.
We stayed here for a week and loved every minute of it! The cabin was so clean, and all the beds were comfortable. The kitchen has everything we need and more. The front porch was our favorite thing; we sat and drank coffee every morning there. We can’t thank Sarah enough for everything.
This cabin is the best of the best. Especially if you have kids probably the best place you could think of. The room my kids and niece stayed in a room with 2 sets of bunk bed, TV, game console(Wii), DVD player and some DVDs. They didn’t want to come out from their room! They also enjoyed morning and evening walk around the lodge. We saw a lot of beautiful flowers, picked up some colorful rocks.
My husband and I stayed in master bed room which has a very comfortable queen size bed and beautiful new bathroom. My brother-in-law stayed in other room which also has a queen size bed. All rooms are tastefully decorated. I really enjoyed that.
Bathroom was all new and bright and clean. Very modern.
Full size Kitchen has everything you need to cook meals for your family. Lots of dishes, utensils, cups, basic spices(s&p, garlic powder, Montreal steak spice, cinnamon powder, etc), spray oil, canola oil in the cabinet. Also Plastic wrap, aluminum foil, ziplock bag too.
Owner Sarah was great. She responds you back pretty quick!
The location is also great. 30-35min drive to MT.Rushmore, Reptile gardens, Bear country USA, 20 min drive to downtown Rapid city. There was a lake called Pactora lake just 5-7 min drive from the cabin. It was beautiful. Kids enjoyed a little hike there (Ospray trail) and dip their feet in the lake.
I asked my family what was the best part of this trip. Everyone said “the cabin!!”. :)
The house was clean and nicely setup. The house was centrally located to the planned activities.
Sarah was very informative and accommodating.
Would stay again.

About the host
Hosted by Sarah Sutton
Campfire Cabins is proudly owned by Albert & Sarah Sutton. We grew up in the Black Hills. We were high school sweethearts and married after graduation. We then moved to Rapid City for work. 25 years and 6 children later we had the opportunity to purchase land and move back to the Black Hills. We soon realized how much we had missed the beauty and serenity of the local area.
We decided to turn our property into an organic hobby farm with a large greenhouse, chickens, bees, ducks & turkeys, milking goats, and a handful of beef cows. We also decided to build cabins near our home to share with other families wanting to experience all the Black Hills have to offer. With 2 children still at home, we own and operate the cabins as a family business. We look forward to getting to know you and be an added blessing to your vacation experience!
Why they chose this property
We believe family is important, and we want to give your family a memorable vacation! We know how stressful it can be on everyone stuck in a car all day. Once you get here there is plenty of room for your kiddos to run around, play ball, and have a water fight on the front lawn while you take a breather and unpack. There are toys, games, books, movies, and video games for them to use. Grab a drink and have a seat on the front porch and just enjoy their energy and happiness :) Our Family Cabin has a nice sized kitchen for you to prepare and cook snacks & meals. We have a large dining table inside and 2 picnic tables outside for you to sit around and enjoy the togetherness of a meal and conversation. With 6 children of our own, we know how expensive travel can be! Vacations don't have to be costly or "flashy". Kids will remember the TIME and EXPERIENCES you give them. They will remember bottle feeding calves up in the Sutton's barn, and playing with the rabbits. They will remember the days you spent hiking, boating, or ATVing with them outdoors. They will remember the other kids they met at the campfire and the smores! They will remember playing soccer, beanbags, or flashlight tag with those same new friends while you get a chance to relax around the campfire and visit with other families from around the country. Want to know which trails are the best? Ask the other grandparents & parents who have already hiked/rode them! What is the best scenic drive? Is the pontoon boat or ATV rental worth it? Where are the best restaurants? Everyone is willing to help you out & share their experiences. Because our Family Cabin is secluded up in the trees, you will have your own private space to relax and play. We (Al & Sarah) live on the property and are always available to answer your questions. Feel free to call or message us anytime! We are down at the campfire most nights, so come down and introduce yourselves! Smores are on us!
