THE LOON'S NEST IS RENTED ON A WEEKLY BASIS - SUNDAY TO SUNDAY. OUR LATE SUMMER SPECIAL RATE IS NOW $1600 A WEEK - A 25% DISCOUNT.
The “Loon’s Nest” is a three-bedroom, year-round home on a sloping lawn to the water’s edge. WI-FI, basic cable and high-speed internet and bring your own Roku device if you want more. Also bring your favorite CDs for the Bose sound system and crank out the hits.
In addition to the three bedrooms, the house also has two single beds in separate rooms - ideal for the kids or someone who snores. We are pet friendly with pre-approval but do charge a $200 pet fee and expect no trace left behind - inside and out. The location is 20 minutes from the state capital of Augusta, on the Winthrop-Monmouth town lines. The first floor features a full kitchen, living room with basic cable TV and open dining area with a cathedral ceiling where you can enjoy your morning coffee and watch the sun rise over the lake or sip an evening glass of wine and look at the moon over 'Big Island'. Two bedrooms on the first floor - both with queen beds, and a single bed in the laundry room.
On the second floor is the third bedroom with queen, and a reading nook with a single bed - complete with dozens of books (children and adults).
The first-floor bathroom features a large tub and separate shower. The first-floor laundry room has a washer and dryer, iron and ironing board and a single bed.
The 100 feet of deep-water shore frontage features a dock for fishing, swimming, sunning or listening to the loons. Two kayaks, an aluminum rowboat and an old fashioned large inner tube also await you at water’s edge. You are also welcomed to bring your boat and launch it from the new state-owned boat ramp. At night, start a campfire in the lakeside fire pit with plenty of firewood provided, roast marshmallows, sip a glass of wine, watch the glow of the fire, listen to the loons, and reflect on the day and start planning the next.
Three-mile long Annabessacook Lake has a state-built, boat-launching ramp that opened in the fall of '22 along Holmes Road. The lake is full of bass, some giant pickerel and pike, and plenty of perch and sunfish for the kids. Some +30-inch-long pike were caught during recent summers by renters. Several pairs of loons live on the lake and their beautifully haunting call can be heard day and night. In addition, eagles, ospreys, and cranes also reside on the lake and wild turkeys live in the nearby woods and occasionally visit.
The “Loon’s Nest” is 3 miles from downtown Winthrop, with small-town shopping, and a large grocery store and drug store; 4 miles from the town center of Monmouth with its renowned summer theater; five miles from the nearest golf course; 15 miles from the state capital of Augusta with its shopping, cinemas, restaurants and just over an hour drive to the coast (Rockland, Camden, Damariscotta, Wiscasset, Bath, Brunswick, and LL Bean and the outlets of Freeport.

The property was perfect with a beautiful view. On a private road very peaceful. Great location! We enjoyed everything and the host was super helpful and welcoming!
Steve was a great host and provided everything needed for a wonderful family vacation. Camp was very clean and really appreciated the extra kitchen gadgets like a crock pot! The kids enjoyed the lake and even caught some fish. Highly recommend!
Stayed at this cabin several times over past few years, Beautiful cabin, on beautiful lake, Family & I always had great time.
Cabin comes with Kayaks, paddle boat
I’d also recommend renting motor boat from Beacon Boat rental to enhance vacation experience , and see all of beautiful Lake Annebesacook.
Beautiful to watch the fall foliage appear around the lake. Spacious well appointed house decorated fitting to Maine and Loon lodge. Fabulous lake views with morning sunrise.
Our family had a great time on the property.
This is a beautiful location for a vacation. Will
book again for sure. Steve was a great guy and even let us
use his PO box when we needed to order a part for our
trolling motor. You will NOT regret renting this place for a vacation.
Awesome location with gorgeous views of the lake. Property has a rustic vibe, with older appliances. Beds were comfortable, and kitchen well stocked. My family thoroughly enjoyed the kayaks, floats, paddle boat etc. Property manager was great at checking in, and extremely accommodating.
Multi generational vacation was great. Plenty of space & comfy beds. The kitchen was well equipped. All the appliances in working order(loved having a dishwasher with a large crowd) The large grassy yard was perfect for playing. We swam every day. There was a large selection of pool floats & PFDs, as well as kayaks, paddle boat & rowboat. Check in & check out were easy. Communication with the owner was flawless. We rented a pontoon boat from a local business & had fun cruising around the lake.

You folks were a delight and one of your grandchildren left a glowing review at the house of their bedspread. That was a first bedspread review in 16 years of renting out the Loon's Nest. It was a hoot to read ! You are welcome back anytime!
We spent the week at Steve's place on the lake and it was perfect. Beautiful house, very clean and everything was lovely. Steve was extremely kind and friendly. Couldnt ask for a more accommodating host! He even left drinks for us to have upon our arrival which was very thoughtful. Thanks Steve!
It was such peaceful and relaxing spot right on the lake. The lake was enjoyable. Plenty of loons visited everyday and loved listening to them at night along with the owls. There were islands to explore. All amenities were provided, we didn’t need anything. Kayaks provided were a favorite. Steve made check in a breeze and was easy to communicate with. Highly recommend the Loons Nest.
My husband and I visited the Loons Nest for our 25th wedding anniversary. First, I must say that Steve, our host, was the most welcoming, responsive host we have encountered over our many rentals through out the years. The house is very clean and stocked with everything you could need for a week away from home. There are kayaks, a paddle-boat, canoe and a nice dock to use to jump into the lake for a swim. For those who like to fish, the lake will not disappoint! It’s also a great place to just relax. I highly recommend a stay at the Loons Nest!
Great stay at the Loons Nest. Well appointed cabin on a very peaceful lake. Host was very responsive provided a great informational binder at the rental. We would rent again without hesitation!
We had a wonderful week! There was plenty of room for everyone in the house, lots of open space (inside and out) which was great for the kids to play. The fishing was awesome - we caught lots of fish right off the dock, including a couple 5-6 pound large mouth bass!
Spacious and immaculate cottage with excellent amenities. We enjoyed kayaking to the nearby islands, fishing right off the dock, lots of swimming and all kinds of lawn area to play. The town of Monmouth is very quaint with local sandwiches and even a bakery. There are also several easy hikes that we did as a family. Grocery stores and all the shopping you need is a quick drive down the road. We definitely enjoyed our week here!
Definitely Will Book Again! Charming, Quiet, Lovely.
The Loon's Nest in Monmouth is such a wonderful get away. The lake is beautiful with lots of wildlife to see: osprey, eagles, mink, chipmunks, beaver, and of course the loons. We loved hearing their serenades. Bring your camera. You'll get some great shots. There is plenty of room for everyone with comfortable beds, (one is firm) and lots of places to gather like the big comfortable kitchen table, the TV room, or the sprawling front lawn. Steve has all kinds of "toys" for the water and plenty of life jackets of all sizes. My husband LOVED the fishing! He used the boat but actually caught some of his best fish right off the dock. (a 6 pound bass: his personal best.) We swam, fished, read in the shade. It was just plain delightful! The kitchen is larger than it looks in the photos. I love to cook and found everything I needed. We shopped at Hanaford's super market, just 5 mins away. (The drinking/tap water is excellent.) Everything we needed was there: spices, paper towels, coffee filters, trash bags, soaps, TP, flashlights, games, playing cards, puzzles, and lots of books (fabulous reading library.) FYI, we all connected to WiFi and had great service all week. You couldn't ask for a better host than Steve: easy communications and great information. We will be returning to Loon's Nest to make even more lifetime memories.
Very well stocked home and the view of the lake was amazing.
Stairs would be a little challenging for elderly or someone with walking difficulties. Lake was peaceful. We took advantage of all the activities they had to offer, swimming, row boat, kayaks, paddle boat and fishing!!!!
Loon’s Nest was awesome! Very spacious house right on the water.
We had a great time staying at the Loon’s Nest. Very spacious open floor plan house and great lawn leading to the lake! Floating dock was perfect for jumping into the lake and fishing was insane! Owner Steve is super nice and has thought about everything to provide for a great stay! Kayaks, boats, lawn chairs, dry wood for fire pit, floating tubes and even cold beer/wine/Gatorade for your arrival in the fridge!! AC units worked great but didn’t need them at night. Great location with easy access to grocery story and general stores. Fielder’s Choice ice cream is about a 15 min ride but worth every second! Best ever! Great vacation!
The camp was wonderful and perfect for a family reunion / 4th of July vacation! 🤗.

Fantastic Maine Vacation
My family and I just got back from our second stay at the Loon's Nest. It was everything that we remembered from our first trip and more because this time, we were able to enjoy the lake and the boats in addition to being able to spend time visiting friends and family. This house is just perfect for our three generational getaways to Maine . My son-in-law is a chef and just loved the kitchen. The kids loved the lake and the kayaks and the paddle boat and row boat. My daughter and I love that we each have a bedroom that we love. Mine is the one with the wood panel which also happens to get the best cross ventilation breeze in the house. Hers is the one with the lake view and queen size bed! The teenagers love the loft and the upstairs bedroom too. We alternated between spending time at the lake and getting out to enjoy some of the other highlights of the area. We left hot and humid Northern Virginia for a glorious week in Maine with cooler temperatures and wonderful lake breezes. We have already started talking about our next visit. One week was not enough! We hope that next summer we can spend two weeks at the Loon's Nest with our whole family so that we can do everything that we loved this year plus some of the things that we didn't get to do this time. It is a pleasure to deal with the owner of this beautiful property. After two successful bookings, he feels like a friend. He is very responsive which I really appreciate and know isn't always the case from other rental experiences. Given that we are trying to schedule a third and maybe even a fourth visit, it goes without saying that we would recommend this property and this owner to anyone wanting to spend a week on a beautiful lake in Maine!

PERFECT PEACEFUL GETAWAY
Our best family vacation yet. We enjoyed an August/Sept week with our family of four, including 2 tween daughters, as well as a Grandfather and Uncle along with us. Even with 6 of us, the house was never crowded. We spent almost everyday kayaking, swimming in the lake, and playing in the yard. We also rented a pontoon boat from Collins Boat Rental for a few days to explore the lake and go tubing. The lake was so peaceful. We all really enjoyed the beautiful sunrises and the call of the loons. We even got to see the bald eagles soar by after roosting on the islands. This beautiful home exceeded our expectations and had everything you could ever want. By far the best property on the lake!

Loved the Loon's Nest!
The Loon's Nest provided our two families with a wonderful place to kick back, relax and unwind for our summer vacation. The house was spacious and beautiful. The kitchen was easy to work in, a/c helped on the hot days, the grill was brand new, washer and dryer were so good to have, and we had all the firewood we needed for evening campfires. The view of Lake Anabessacook was spectacular. We fished, kayaked, swam, and explored the lake. The loons' call was beautiful...a peaceful and ghostly sound. We enjoyed seeing the loons and all the nature around the house. I definitely recommend this property for rental. You won't be disappointed!

peaceful retreat
We've stayed at the loons nest 4 or 5 times now and it is always a lovely time for kids and adults. We loved listening to the loons call all over the lake and playing on and off the dock. Lots of fun water toys and a great yard for picnicking and running around. Lots of fun activities around, however once I'm at the loons nest I'm hard pressed to think of a place I'd rather be. Kids honed their swimming skills and it was peaceful and beautiful. So glad to have had the opportunity to stay in this sweet home!

Perfect summer getaway
This is the second time we've stayed at the Loon's Nest and it was even better than we remembered. The location can't be beat - Lake Annabessacook is large enough to offer lots of recreational opportunity, but small enough to feel very private. Steve has outfitted the property with kayaks, a rowboat, big innertubes, a paddleboat and plenty of life vests for all sizes - we emailed to let him know that a gasket was missing from the paddleboat and he brought a new one over two days later! The back yard is perfect for get-togethers, the dock is clean and comfortable and the water was gorgeous with a couple of loon families who swam right along with us and sang to us at night. We brought stand up paddle boards with us and had a blast. The house has plenty of room with a light and airy layout and fantastic views of the lake, very clean, well-stocked kitchen, gas grill, plenty of towels. Great location, 5 minutes from the grocery store, within an hour's drive of Freeport, several coastal beaches and plenty of other Maine beauty. Definitely recommend and will plan to stay again.

A Wonderful Stay at Loon's Nest
We just got home from a delightful week at Loon's Nest. The house is very roomy and comfortable and does not have the feel of a "typical" rental property -- instead it felt like we had been invited to stay in someone's home for a week.
The lake is gorgeous and we made great use of the kayaks. We caught a bunch of largemouth bass and perch as well as a few smallmouth bass. The eagles, osprey and loons were always around to provide entertainment. There are also a bunch of really nice trails nearby if you are inclined to so some hiking. All in all, it was a wonderful stay and we wouldn't hesitate to do it again.

About the host
Hosted by Steve McCausland
Steve McCausland purchased the 'Loon's Nest' in 2009 and continues to spend the summers in a smaller lakeside camp a mile away where he's spent the past 38 Summers. 2026 will be the 18th summer the Loon's Nest has been rented. The renters include a number of folks who return annually and a mix of new VRBO renters.
Annabessacook Lake is 3 1/2 miles long with great fishing and loons, eagles & cranes doing flybys. A typical summer weekend rarely has more than a dozen power boats on the lake, unless there is a bass tournament.
Steve McCausland served as the spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety in Augusta for 32 years and semi-retired in 2020. He now advises businesses, non-profits, and government agencies in crisis communication and training with Marshall Communications of Portland.
Why they chose this property
I've spent every summer on Annabessacook Lake since 1988 at another camp a mile away. The Loon's Nest and the Lake are special places for me, and the many positive reviews speak for themselves.
