About this property
MAINE IS STILL OPEN IN SEPTEMBER AND SO IS THE LOONS NEST IN MONMOUTH-WINTHROP
MAINE IN LATE SUMMER IS A GREAT TIME OF YEAR WHERE THE KIDS ARE BACK TO SCHOOL, THE LAKE IS QUIETER, DAYS ARE STILL WARM, EVERYWHERE IS LESS CROWDED, AND THE LOONS ARE STILL HERE! WEEKS OF 9/6, 9/13, 9/20 & 9/27 ARE OPEN AND ALL HAVE A 25% DISCOUNT AT $1600 A WEEK.
THE LOON'S NEST IS RENTED ON A WEEKLY BASIS - SUNDAY TO SUNDAY.
The “Loon’s Nest” is a three-bedroom, year-round home on a sloping lawn to the water’s edge. WI-FI, basic cable and high-speed internet and bring your own Roku device if you want more. Also bring your favorite CDs for the Bose sound system and crank out the hits.
In addition to the three bedrooms, the house also has two single beds in separate rooms - ideal for the kids or someone who snores. We are pet friendly with pre-approval but do charge a $200 pet fee and expect no trace left behind - inside and out. The location is 20 minutes from the state capital of Augusta, on the Winthrop-Monmouth town lines. The first floor features a full kitchen, living room with basic cable TV and open dining area with a cathedral ceiling where you can enjoy your morning coffee and watch the sun rise over the lake or sip an evening glass of wine and look at the moon over 'Big Island'. Two bedrooms on the first floor - both with queen beds, and a single bed in the laundry room.
On the second floor is the third bedroom with queen, and a reading nook with a single bed - complete with dozens of books (children and adults).
The first-floor bathroom features a large tub and separate shower. The first-floor laundry room has a washer and dryer, iron and ironing board and a single bed.
The 100 feet of deep-water shore frontage features a dock for fishing, swimming, sunning or listening to the loons. Two kayaks, an aluminum rowboat and an old fashioned large inner tube also await you at water’s edge. You are also welcomed to bring your boat and launch it from the new state-owned boat ramp. At night, start a campfire in the lakeside fire pit with plenty of firewood provided, roast marshmallows, sip a glass of wine, watch the glow of the fire, listen to the loons, and reflect on the day and start planning the next.
Three-mile long Annabessacook Lake has a state-built, boat-launching ramp that opened in the fall of '22 along Holmes Road. The lake is full of bass, some giant pickerel and pike, and plenty of perch and sunfish for the kids. Some +30-inch-long pike were caught during recent summers by renters. Several pairs of loons live on the lake and their beautifully haunting call can be heard day and night. In addition, eagles, ospreys, and cranes also reside on the lake and wild turkeys live in the nearby woods and occasionally visit.
The “Loon’s Nest” is 3 miles from downtown Winthrop, with small-town shopping, and a large grocery store and drug store; 4 miles from the town center of Monmouth with its renowned summer theater; five miles from the nearest golf course; 15 miles from the state capital of Augusta with its shopping, cinemas, restaurants and just over an hour drive to the coast (Rockland, Camden, Damariscotta, Wiscasset, Bath, Brunswick, and LL Bean and the outlets of Freeport.

About the host
Hosted by Steve McCausland
Steve McCausland purchased the 'Loon's Nest' in 2009 and continues to spend the summers in a smaller lakeside camp a mile away where he's spent the past 38 Summers. 2026 will be the 18th summer the Loon's Nest has been rented. The renters include a number of folks who return annually and a mix of new VRBO renters.
Annabessacook Lake is 3 1/2 miles long with great fishing and loons, eagles & cranes doing flybys. A typical summer weekend rarely has more than a dozen power boats on the lake, unless there is a bass tournament.
Steve McCausland served as the spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety in Augusta for 32 years and semi-retired in 2020. He now advises businesses, non-profits, and government agencies in crisis communication and training with Marshall Communications of Portland.
Why they chose this property
I've spent every summer on Annabessacook Lake since 1988 at another camp a mile away. The Loon's Nest and the Lake are special places for me, and the many positive reviews speak for themselves.
