Waterfront~Dog Friendly~ Lieutenant's Lodge
Brought to you by the Heart of Cape Cod, Lieutenant Lodge is a soul-stirring escape on Wellfleet’s Lieutenant Island, where tide and time move slow. This 1927 bluff-top hunting lodge offers panoramic bay views, private beach access, and wraparound porches made for sunset toasts. Kayak through golden marshes, read on the sleeping porch, and wake to seabirds echoing across the flats. Open spring through fall, it’s a timeless haven to breathe deep and fall in love with the Cape all over again.

Brought to you by the Heart of Cape Cod, Lieutenant Lodge is a rare and remarkable escape on Wellfleet’s Lieutenant Island—where tidal rhythms guide your day, bird calls echo through the salt marsh, and sunsets set the bay ablaze in color.
Originally built in 1927 as a hunting lodge, this historic home now welcomes guests with rustic charm, coastal elegance, and front-row seats to one of the Cape’s most protected and peaceful landscapes. Cross the one-lane wooden bridge and enter a slower world, where winding causeways, sweeping marshes, and hidden beaches feel like a page from another time.
Perched on a bluff above the bay, the lodge offers panoramic views and direct access to Hidden Beach below. Each day unfolds with quiet wonder—coffee on the porch as herons glide across the tidal flats, a slow paddle through golden reeds, or simply sinking into a chair as the sky turns rose and amber. Inside, the home retains its original character with wood beams, vintage touches, and a lived-in warmth that invites you to unplug, unwind, and reconnect.
Whether you're basking in summer sun or wrapped in fall color, Lieutenant Lodge is a place to experience the Cape as it once was—and still is, if you know where to look.

Airbnb adds its own platform service fee on top of this and collects local taxes. These are not controlled or collected by us
Whether you're a returning Cape visitor or discovering this place for the first time, Lieutenant Lodge offers something rare—a front-row seat to the wild, quiet, endlessly beautiful side of the Cape. It’s not just a stay. It’s a return to rhythm, history, and something deep in your bones that knows how to rest.
There is no wifi - Guest must use their own data plans to create a wifi hotspot Wifi hotspots can be rented from library for use during stay Tides are the rise and fall of ocean water levels that happen every day. They’re caused by the gravitational pull of the moon and the sun on Earth’s oceans. The moon’s pull is stronger because it’s closer, and it causes water to bulge out on the side of Earth facing the moon and also on the opposite side.
As Earth rotates, different areas move into these bulges, which is why we get two high tides and two low tides each day. It’s like the ocean is following the moon’s lead in a giant, watery dance. Please check a tide chart for Wellfleet Harbor (in your guidebook) so that you can plan accordingly.

Our group of 6 stayed at Lieutenant's Lodge in late May/early June -- it is such a great place. Location couldn't be more perfect - stairs down to the beach/flats right out the back door. Kitchen is great, beds and living area were super comfortable. Got stopped at the bridge once by high tide - while waiting we waded in and watched the horseshoe crabs do their thing -- very cool! We highly recommend Lieutenant's Lodge.

Wonderful stay!
We absolutely loved our weekend stay at Lieutenant Lodge! The house was immaculate and exceeded all expectations. Perfect location right on the beach and a quick drive to downtown wellfleet. Within minutes of arriving, Our golden retriever jumped right in the water and had the time of her life walking the sandbars with us. The beds were the most comfortable beds I have ever slept in. We highly recommend booking this house. We are already planning a trip back next year!

The Island
The experience was awesome, it’s the feel of old Cape Cod, like time stood still! The beach is secluded like the way it was when I first started coming to Lieutenant Island in the 1950’s!
I recently rented a lovely house in Wellfleet, MA on Lieutenant Island, and had a fantastic experience. The house was spacious, cozy, and had all the amenities we needed for a comfortable stay. The location was perfect - quiet and secluded, yet still close enough to town for convenience. The views from the house were breathtaking, with beautiful sunsets and serene surroundings. The property was well-maintained and clean, and the owner was friendly and accommodating. I would highly recommend this rental to anyone looking for a peaceful and enjoyable getaway.
WOW. What a wonderful little holiday. The house is simple, tasteful and very comfortable. Clean, tidy and incredibly charming. Linens were very nice, soft and cozy. We didn't get a chance to kayak or bike (both supplied by owner). Next time for sure!
The star of the stay was the location. The cottage is perched on a cliff overlooking Cape Cod Bay. We counted - 45 steps to the top of the stairs that lead you to a beach that was empty and gorgeous. A wonderful place for birders or curious beach combers. We were pouting like little kids when we had to leave. Grateful to have had the chance to stay here.
We will be back.
We could not have been happier with our stay: us and our greyhound. Our hosts: we had no problems whatsoever, but we had some questions and our hosts were very responsive, extremely organized in providing information (there’s a House Guide that goes over everything you can imagine), welcoming and sweet. From the first encounter with our hosts when booking, we felt welcome and cared about. The home: it’s truly lovely. What other reviews say about the bed sheets is true: soooooooofffffftttt. The beds are incredibly comfortable. The property is impeccably clean, which is something that matters to us a great deal. The views are breathtaking. Lounging on the back deck or in the delightfully comfortable sunroom is a perfect spot to relax. At high tide, you can float right into the water from the stairs leading to the beach. The outdoor shower is a dream. When the tide is out, enjoy a stroll along the beach looking for oysters and claims, skipping stones, and watching crabs and creatures. If, like us, you enjoy cooking – the kitchen is abundantly stocked with plenty of plates, glasses, mugs, all sorts of cookware and utensils, even a pizza wheel. There are some condiments, but just the real basics (wouldn’t expect more to be stocked) – so bring anything unique or special if you’re a cook. Our pup was made to feel just as welcome as we were, though we don’t want to spoil any sweet surprises. If you book – and we whole-heartedly recommend.

Mr
Loved the location. Only wish there was a landing about half way down the steps to sit at when tide was In. And to take a break when you have littles. But definitely will rent again
At The Heart of Cape Cod & InsideOut Properties, our intention is to create a memorable “experience” more than just a “stay”. The goal is to have our guests want to return to our properties year after year because we provide what their emotional centers (memories/insides) tie to the comfortable and clean surroundings we provide (properties/outside). We also understand that homeowners are emotionally tied to their properties as well. We treat each property as if it were our own, caring for it, and the homeowner, inside and out. Welcome to a Heart of Cape Cod property!
