Your host, Stuart MacLean Ramsay, was born and raised in the Highlands of Scotland, and emigrated to America when he was 21. He discovered Portland over 30 years ago and moved here to create and manage the BridgePort Brewpub, Oregon’s first craft brewery. (Prior to this, he managed North America’s first brewpub, in Washington state.) Stuart has been brewing, writing and educating about craft beer and whisky ever since, and is the owner of Whiskyback Brewing, a family of craft beers designed to compliment different styles of whisky) Regarded as a world expert on whisky, he is a published author, has written numerous articles on spirits and beer for the likes of Whisky Magazine, the Malt Advocate, Cigar Aficionado and the Portland Oregonian. He has his own whisky school – Ramsay’s Dram Academy of Whisky and is a Kentucky Colonel and a Keeper of the Quaich!
Stuart was named the “Best Person to Drink with in Portland” by the Willamette Week, a local newspaper. He can host a private whisky (and beer!) education class in the home while you are visiting; ask him for the details.

Street parking is plentiful and the neighborhood is safe and walkable. The John Barleycorn Home is filled with history and happy vibes, plentiful rooms and spaces to gather in, or just chill, books, music, art, and a fully equipped kitchen.

The John Barleycorn Home has an extensive (free! ) library, specializing in books about Scotland, the Pacific Northwest, Scotch Whisky, Bourbon Whiskey & Kentucky, Craft beer, Indigenous culture, general fiction and non-fiction. And it's the only short-term rental with a wooden spurtle, an implement used to remove the lumps in Scottish porridge. (The porridge is complimentary.)
