Casa Camaleon is located in Palm Beach Estates which is a quaint and exclusively private community of Playa Grande. You will arrive at Palm Beach first through a gated entrance and then onto a narrow stone-covered road circling our community of only around 200 homes making our community feel welcome. 5 minutes from the front door to the beach sand, we are a short beach walk from the world-famous surf break of Playa Grande as well as several other popular surf beaches including our home break right out front which we call Palm Beach Main. The Camaleon Cabinas is a small group of 5 private, self-contained apartments, owner-run with specific attention to detail. Tropical garden. Fenced yard. The decor is ethnic boutique-style simply done but perfectly sufficient. We have 2 x studio apartments and 3 x two-bedroom apartments. Each apartment is fully equipped with kitchenware, modern AC, free WIFI, all linens and towels, boards, and bikes onsite. It's everything we look for when we travel. We are unique in our ability to offer affordable accommodation without compromising on what we found to be important amenities whilst still being right by the most beautiful beach and also close to the ferry which crosses over into Tamarindo for those who want to feel a little more hustle and bustle for the day. Palm Beach is in the center of the Marine Park for the Turtle nesting grounds. The beach is seemingly endless and always uncrowded. Great surf, stunning beach, countless wildlife of all kinds, quaint town, very good for the soul. Pura Vida

This is a very nice affordable base camp for surfers and beach lovers around Playa Grande. The property was exactly as advertised. Very peaceful secluded spot. I will return for another stay.
The casa had everything we needed to blissfully enjoy our week in the hot air of Costa Rica right next to a wonderful beach. Sharr is an amazing host and was always available for all our questions and needs. We would definitely go back again.
A perfect, quiet, private apartment for my husband and me. We loved our long walks on the beautiful beach. The location is perfect for enjoying sand, surf, and sun. Local spots to eat at were lovely. We will definitely stay here again. Sharr was extremely helpful with any questions prior to our travel and made some great recommendations! Thank you.
The bed was a little uncomfortable but nice my girlfriend seemed very itchy from something which resulted in her scratching her leg and foot causing her to bleed, unfortunately. But very nice neighborhood Palm Beach Estates

Thank you Brian for a great visit!
I am pretty certain your girlfriend was feeling the effects of small itchy bites from "pika-pika" jelly fish in the ocean after swimming. We have this a lot this time of year due to the strong winds of February. Vinegar works well on the bites! Fortunately not long lasting or painful. Nonetheless we had a super time hosting you!
Casa Camaleon is a great place to stay in for all types of travellers. It is in a quiet location surrounded by lots of trees and wildlife. It’s a quick walk to the beach and local grocery mart. There are also a lot of restaurants within walking distance as well. The kitchenette in the apartment had everything I needed to prepare all of my meals. There is also an outdoor shower when you get back from the beach. I like the lockbox key system as well, so you never have to worry about bringing your room key to the beach or having to hide it somewhere. The owner Sharr is also great to deal with and very knowledgeable about the area and can recommend all types of things to do and see. Overall it was a perfect place to stay.

This apartment is in an excellent location, a short walk to the beach and local restaurants. It is set in a peaceful shaded garden which is ideal for relaxing out of the midday heat. The nearby beach is stunning with great waves for surfing or body boarding and is not crowded at all. Parking is just outside the apartment. We enjoyed breakfast’s and dinners at Cafe Mar Azul which is 5 minute walk away with good food and friendly staff. Communication was good with the owners and we had no problem finding the apartment or with check in. We also enjoyed a canoe safari on the estuary seeing many birds, small crocodiles, lizards and howler monkeys. We would definitely recommend.

Costa Rica get away
Absolutely loved the place! The only negative was that the security code to access the property was changed at the last minute on the day of our arrival, and due to an unexpected power outage, we had no way of getting the communication with the new code until the 2nd day. It would have been better if the original code I received on my VRBO a couple days before our arrival had worked for the first night at least.
Other than that, the place was really amazing and my mother enjoyed her stay there VERY much!!!!
This is rental is a great location. Very efficient use of space. For future travelers I recommend bringing your own beach towel. The ones provided are simply bath towels and when I reached out to the owner to get more, I was denied. If you need a hair dryer you need to bring your own. Also you need to bring bath soap and shampoos.

Thank you for your feedback Marian. We provide regular size beach towels for all our rentals and our guests have always been happy with what we provide. Please note we do not offer oversize resort towels as commonly found in all inclusive's or chain hotels. We can provide additional towels when requested but as I explained over New Years weekend we were unable to provide extra towels as we had limited staff on the holiday. We do not provide a hair dryer.
Great cabana. Just me so I only used one bedroom. Had everything I needed, and great wifi. Very close to beautiful beach and great restaurant. I ate all 4 nights at cafe mar azul, which is just past the path to the beach. Insanely low price, 11 bucks, for seared tuna, smashed potatoes and sauted veggies. All the food was fantastic and cheap. Small market just a couple hundred yards further. Walk south on the beach, catch the water taxi for a buck, and you're in Tamarindo. Everybody I met was super nice. Got a ride from Neil from Liberia to the cabana and then onto my next stop in Playa Avellanus. Super nice. Highly recommend Casa Cameleon.
No surprises here, exactly as listed. Communication with the Host was always timely. They turned us onto a great transport service to and from Liberia Airport. This place is on the small side but had everything we needed for our stay. It was very clean and comfortable. The king bed was on the hard side and not the foam mattress we are used to but worked fine. The air con runs all the time and makes some noise but we like some white noise when we sleep. Easy walk to the beach and 3 restaurants. Cafe Mar Azul was by far the best. George make the best Mai Tai. The market is Very basic with no prices listed. We followed other’s advice and stoped on the way from the airport for supplies. Tamarindo has many grocery stores to choose from. We did not cook, just sandwiches, but the kitchen supplies are minimal and it would be difficult to cook much. Large refrigerator, hot plate and toaster oven. No microwave in our unit. 20-30 min walk and $2 ferry ride to Tamarindo. The beach is nice and flat with no rocks. There is minimal shade but we travel with our own chairs and shade. These along surf boards and bicycles can be rented close by. We also brought our own liquor along with mayonnaise and miracle whip. We would have no problem staying here again.
Tip- if you are buying coffee the airport pricing is the same as we found in Tamarindo and if you buy 5 you get 2 free which is a good added savings. Costa Rican coffee is some of the best and I always stock up when there.

J’y retournerais demain ! 5/5
Only about a 5 minute walk to the beach. Clean and convenient place to stay in Playa Grande. Sharr was easy to contact if we had any problems and was very helpful.
Thanks again!

Host not really a host
I loved Playa Grande. I loved Palm Beach Estates. I did not know it was an as isolated property at the end of a very bad road on which taxi drivers and shuttle drivers do not even want to take you to. I had no way of getting transport to or from grocery stores. The owner host did not communicate with me very well throughout my whole stay. What I did learn was from other locals and neighbors in the vicinity but I learned many things to late. There is no book in the room to tell you about the locality and what’s around you. When I asked the owner for some thing like that she sharply said it keeps changing so we don’t have a book. But she offered no helpful information. Also they do not change towels or sheets or anything. Unless you ask for them. Also the space was tiny. No closet. Three hooks to hang clothes on. And no desk or table inside To use a computer. The Internet connection was very weak. My PC would not stay connected for more than 10 minutes if that per day

Response from VrboOwner on 17 Jan, 2021
We realised soon after Arielle arrived that our property was not a good fit for her. Being that she is very elderly and somewhat disabled it made it challenging for her to get around. We wished she had reached out to ask questions before she reserved with us and definitely before she arrived. But she never responded to any of our emails or correspondence after (or even before)her reservation. We were unaware of her fragile condition and would have recommended she do some things differently had we known. We have 100 Mbps download which is exceptionally fast and both guests in apartments on either side of her were Zoom conferencing for work every day with no problems. She seemed to struggle with basic computer and internet functions, possibly because it is new to her as she had mentioned?
Housekeeping during Covid is scheduled based on request only as we explained. We have to pre-arrange with the guest to be out of the apartment during the cleaning so as to limit contact with the guests. This is something we cannot avoid. All our guests simply request the cleaning and then we schedule it. It has worked very well.
We do not have a services booklet inside the apartment since Covid because we had to keep revising what was available and how the services were ever-changing. Therefore instead we provide all details in an electronic guidebook and services format. This allows us to constantly update it.
We were very kind and patient with Arielle but she was somewhat rude and abrasive to us and our staff, as well as the neighbors. I would say she was a difficult guest to host but we did our best.
We had dozens upon dozens of WhatsApp messages every day from her.
We helped her organize a food delivery service from our local grocer and had the veggie truck stop by the house for her.
There is a set of shelves in the bedroom as well as hooks. 100% as photographed. More hooks in the bathroom and more on the patio.
We are located in the middle of Palm Beach which is not at all isolated but rather a beach town inside a National Park which is not a busy city with taxis buzzing about. We have taxis who we work with and had recommended to Arielle before she arrived to which she did not answer. Most taxis are from the busier towns and are usually running trips back and forth to the city, not the beach. We suggest we help with taxi arrangements. Our place is suited to people who are looking to be amongst nature, the beach and are able to walk or bike to some degree.
Stayed at Casa Camaleon for a week and had a great time. Everything was clean and well kept. Very close to the beach and just a short walk to all the wonderful restaurants at Palm Beach Estates.
Everything was clean and comfortable and as described. Great location with close walk to awesome beach. We had friends staying at a house just down the road, so we didn’t hang out there much but it was perfect for our needs.

Don’t book with mobile app
BEWARE- the amenities at this property are not how they appear in the VRBO mobile app.
- the communal pool listed is actually a 10 min walk to a hotel where you need to purchase drinks and food to swim (this important detail doesn’t show in the app).
We had booked this property, needing a pool for our young family and were very dissatisfied when we arrived. The owners wouldn’t entertain a refund for a shorter stay but instead lent us a bucket & baby bath tub as compensation for the missing pool. We feel it was false advertising on their part and a compromise with our reservation length should have been given.
Other discrepancies are:
- The surf boards in the description and pictures are not included and need to be rented for longer than a day for them to get them out of storage for you.
- The laundry is also at an extra price.
- Bike rentals at an extra price
The overall Casa (minus surf boards) is smaller and darker than appears in the pictures. With only 1 air conditioner for the whole unit the back double room remained hot and humid throughout our week.
Two stars were given - one for the beach - it’s nice and quiet. And another star for being the end unit #5 - it was nice to have the privacy and not have people walking by.
Overall, read the fine print for this listing and ensure that you fully understand the fine details. The inflexible nature of the hosts wasn’t super Pura Vida (something we didn’t encounter during our two month trip in Costa Rica).

It is unfortunate for Andrea to have had confusion with the VRBO app. We do not have a pool onsite and only advertise that we have access to a communal pool a short walk from our property. 250 meters on Google Earth by road.
We also offer board rentals and bike rentals onsite however they are not included for free. They are available to rent.
We tried our best to accommodate Andreas family. We offered a full refund despite our no refund policy if they would allow us to rebook but Andrea declined our offer.
We have many repeat families visit every year with great success so this was an unfortunate situation.
We have a beautiful location with 5 star reviews as we continue to work hard to create an amazing stay for all our guests.
