About this property
1111 Middle Street by AvantStay | Charming Historic Cottage + Beach Access
Charleston was founded in 1670, which makes it one of the most historic cities in our nation. 1111 Middle Street on Sullivan’s Island has been a part of Charleston’s history for just over 150 years! Built around 1860 (owned by the same family for 125 years) and featured in the National Historic Register, 1111 Middle Street is one of the most special and unique homes your family will ever spend a vacation!
Located near Fort Moultrie, this property was central to the defense of Charleston during the War of 1812, the first shots of the War Between the States, and the sinking of U-Boats during World War Two. During the Cold War, the conning towers of nuclear submarines would silently pass this amazing home after being armed at the Naval Base. Even today, from the large screen porch your family will be able to see the coming and going of hulking container ships, cruise ships, and the Charleston Shrimp Fleet as they navigate the channel between Sullivan’s Island and Fort Sumter. From sunsets over Charleston’s Church Steeples, to the imperious Cooper River Bridge, 1111 Middle Street offers one of the most special views of Historic Charleston and the Atlantic Ocean since the early 1800’s.
1111 Middle Street has many features of the property that preserve its special history. The property owner’s steps at preservation have made the home highly desirable. Even Hollywood has recognized the uniqueness of this home and featured it in the movie “Dear John”! History lives both inside and outside of 1111 Middle Street. The interior features historic wood floors and walls with four bedrooms and two full baths. Smoking and candles are prohibited to preserve this beautiful home. Two bedrooms are located upstairs and feature harbor views. The downstairs master bedroom opens onto the oceanfront porch. The living room and dining area also open to the screened porch. The preservation of this home prevents it from featuring a central heating and cooling system. It is closed during the winter season and air conditioning is provided with window cooling units. Also, in keeping with the historic nature of the home, only a single television is featured. The large screen porch is where your family will spend most of their time when not on the beach. It is wide with incredible views and is ideally positioned to capture the southwest winds during the summer months making it comfortable despite the heat.
A short private path takes you down to a quiet beach that changes in size based on the Charleston tides. Beachside Vacations is so proud to offer you the opportunity to relive history in this truly amazing home that has been watching over Charleston for 150 years. From battles that shaped our country’s history, to hurricanes and earthquakes, 1111 Middle Street has been present on Sullivan’s Island throughout and is the perfect home for your family’s next vacation. Book early for the best chance to reserve this amazing home! "Licensed vacation rental by Town of Sullivan's Island."
Additional Amenities Include: High-speed internet with Wi-Fi. Air conditioning is provided by window units. There is not a heater for the home. Washer and dryer. Parking for four cars. Linens and bath towels are provided, as well as starter supplies including soap, shampoo, and paper products.
Sullivan's Island is a charming vacation destination known for its pristine beaches, rich history, and vibrant local culture. Explore the historic Fort Moultrie, stroll along the scenic coastline, or enjoy water activities like kayaking and paddleboarding. Delight in local cuisine at acclaimed restaurants such as Poe’s Tavern and The Obstinate Daughter. The island’s relaxed atmosphere, combined with its close proximity to Charleston’s attractions, makes it perfect for both adventure and relaxation. Whether you're soaking up the sun or exploring the town’s quaint shops, Sullivan’s Island offers a perfect blend of leisure and excitement.

This place is a bit rustic, however, it is so pleasant to sit on the screen porch and listen to the waves.

Thank you for the kind words. We’re so glad you found us attentive and that the property felt lovely for your stay. Hearing that the porch made your whole trip truly means a lot. We’d love to welcome you back whenever you’re in the area again.
Hi Lydia, We're thrilled that you had a great time and loved the house! Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us. We look forward to hosting you again soon!
The minute we walked into your beautiful whitewashed beach cottage we were in love. The view alone from the long screened in porch with its row of rocking chairs and sounds and smells of the ocean only 40 steps away would have been enough, but the house with its whitewashed walls and white wicker furniture with comfy cushions and the natural wooden floors and green painted furniture was all perfect. It was clean and wellstocked with towels and kitchen necessities and any questions or needs were promptly and politely answered. I was so so relaxed. Everything about our stay was a gift of peace and joy. We will be backz

What a beautifully written review — thank you for sharing such heartfelt thoughts about your stay! We're so delighted that the cottage charmed you from the moment you walked in, from the screened-in porch and rocking chairs to the coastal details throughout the home. Knowing that the space brought you such peace and relaxation, with the ocean just steps away, is exactly what we hope every guest experiences. It was our pleasure to be responsive to your needs along the way, and we're so glad everything came together perfectly. We would love to welcome you back anytime!
This is our 4th year returning to this amazing property. Excellent location with fantastic views. Sullivans Island is a special place and there are very few original properties left on the island. It has the nostalgic beach house feel I crave. A place that is comfortable but you can still let in the ocean air and sand. It’s true outdoor/ indoor living. Our whole family loves this property so so much. We will absolutely be back.

Thank you, Ileana! We’re honored that you’ve chosen to return for four years in a row and that the property continues to provide the nostalgic beach house feel you love. We’re thrilled your whole family enjoys it so much, and we look forward to welcoming you back for many more stays!
Older beach house right on beach! Fully equipped kitchen. Extra blankets and heaters for chilly nights. Lots and lots of room including porch facing beach.
Sunrises to the east! Sunsets to the west! Spectacular view of Cooper River Bridge, which happened to be designed by Michael Abrahams!
Loved the age and simplicity of the home. Fantastic location. As an interior designer I was chomping at the bit to decorate this house and guesthouse and bring it to the next level.
Desperately needs a new sofa, the springs in the existing ones are shot.
The porch and hammock were a dream!

A wonderful experience!
Our family met in Charleston for a mini-vacation and chose to stay in this charming beach cottage. It is spacious and attractively decorated in the style of days gone by, and we totally loved it. It was well-stocked with everything we needed, and the location is breathtaking, with views across to Fort Sumpter and, in another direction, to the city of Charleston. Marine "traffic" included large container ships which passed through the channel to the sea, a feature we enjoyed tremendously. The living and dining rooms are large and comfortable for a group (we were 9) and the screened porch is a delight. The beds are comfortable, and the bathrooms had good showers. After dragging ourselves away to a restaurant the first night we decided to cook at the house for the rest of the time, watching the light fade over the sea and soaking in the lovely sunsets. This house is for those who love the feel of an old-time beach cottage with just enough modernization to make for a comfortable stay. It is a treasure, and we hope to return in the not-too-distant future.

Incredible review and description of your recent vacation in our home! It is always hard to explain homes without staying in them or having a chance to view them in person. Your review does a great job describing the experience of staying at this home, and we appreciate it tremendously. We are more than pleased you had a great vacation and hope to see you back on the island soaking in the lovely sunsets soon!
Everything was top notch and came as listed in the property description. No frills & rustic so to speak. The property is steps from the sand and the views from the beach of the bridge and downtown Charleston are beautiful. The only comment I have is that the breaker kept flipping when the space heaters were plugged in. I would suggest the property owner has a ‘map’ of what can be plugged in where to eliminate this problem.
From the moment we drove onto the property, we felt like we drove back to a simpler time. The adventures to explore nature and all the wonders of the ocean were steps and fingertips away. The old charm of the traditional decor and the simplicity of a porch facing the water will literally soothe your soul. We only left the home to pick up more fresh fruit and veggies. Sunrise and sunsets on the porch brought life to great conversations and socializing. If you’re looking for a simpler time and place away from the world... this is the perfect place. Stress melts away, tensions erode, and joy thrives.
I grew up going to Sullivan's Island. Needless to say, "things" have changed there, mostly since HUGO destroyed a large majority of this special place. Our week long stay in November at this beautiful, historic home on Middle St. was one of the best weeks we have ever spent there. We were blessed with beautiful weather; we loved watching the cargo ships come and go both day and night; we rode bikes, searched for crabs, walked, played bocce ball on the beach and had beautiful, airy family meals on the expansive porch. This home is NOT for everyone! It is OLD! Some of the windows are hard to open and close and parts of it might even be lopsided. There is no heat or central air. That all being said, we LOVED it!!! A veritable escape from reality and a place full of peace, fresh air - all the old-fashioned way. We will be back!
This historic beach house is a very special place to stay. We visited for a family visit during the COVID pandemic and it was perfect. From the minute we opened the door and walked through to the oceanfront porch and threw open all of the doors, we knew this was going to be a vacation to remember. The kitchen spaces with two refrigerators and two sinks had everything we needed and more. It was difficult to figure out the bedroom arrangements from the listing but the second bedroom downstairs has 4 twins and the bedrooms upstairs have 2 twins each. The house has a few quirks due to its age but that made it all the more charming. A couple of ceiling fans were broken but the breezes through the house were heavenly and the A/C units in the bedrooms worked well when needed. The beach is right outside the fabulous screened porch where we spent most of our time rocking and hanging out in the hammock. The location is very nice, quiet residential part of the island but convenient at the same time. We are planning our trip back.
This is the quintessential Sullivan’s Island beach house and its perfect!! We had the best long weekend! The kitchen is well supplied for cooking and the beds are comfy. The porch is the highlight! Highly recommend this property!!
Beautiful views, access to lovely beach. The screen porch, particularly the hammock, is a great respite from the Summer sun. If you're looking for luxury, this is not the place. If you're looking for a great old beach house for your family...this is definitely it.
Location is excellent, great old house but really needs some deep cleaning, bathrooms and kitchen in particular. I realize that there’s no central air but this house desperately needs a means of cooling the upstairs bath... it is literally like a sauna.
An 1811 building is what you get. It is less than 50 yards from the water and a great sandy beach. The kitchen is well set up. With 2 fridges you have enough space for food and beverages.
The only things that I would improve would be the sofa and love seat in the main room. They have seen better days. All bedrooms but one have twin beds. If adults out number kids this is not ideal.
I will return despite the furnishings because I am there for the beach not the furnishings.

House was older than expected and located on part of beach that wasn’t ideal. The yard (front and back) was an eye sore. Window units did their best to keep up with the heat but most of the house was often hot. We won’t be back.

We loved it! It was built in the mid 1800s' and has survived the ocean which is just yards from the porch. Very original inside and exudes charm. Be ready though if you expect upscale kitchen with bells and whistles and marble bathrooms. We were there two weeks and cooked in about half of the time it may not be Martha Stewart but very adequate. Come expecting a wonderful experience, chill and enjoy, well not too much chill only the bedrooms are air conditioned.

Overall a great time. However!
Very rustic, but was expected. However, did not expect to find that only the bedrooms had A/C, and that was window units (very loud). Beautiful views, right on the beach, convenient location. If you can handle the hot temperatures and high humidity without A/C in the house you will have a great time.

Old-fashioned beach house
Do not rent this house if you require what most high-end beach houses offer now: elevators, high-end appliances, central air, media rooms, etc. This house is super-charming and quirky and old. It is more like a big cabin, with wood floors and walls and old doors and windows. It has an awesome smell like your grandma's house: not moldy or dirty or anything, just...old. We all loved it. It has been freshened up with lots of white paint and linens, painted furniture, etc. So cute! I took lots of pictures for our own cabin. The layout of the house meandered due to apparent add-ons over the years: it was wonderful. The rooms are nicely sized (big) for lounging and sleeping. It is clean and the beds are comfortable. The baths and kitchen are clean and white but are definitely cabin-grade, if that matters to you. The kitchen has a pantry and two sinks and two refrigerators. There were a few bugs; we kept all food in the fridge. The screened front porch is AMAZING and so is the view. There was a near-constant breeze through the house as it is right on the water and there are many doors opening onto the porch. I imagine on a still August day it could be a little less charming as the a/c is from window units. The house could use a Sonos and new binoculars.

The perfect beach house!
We had 9 women in this house for 5 days and we all loved it. The location is amazing. Water views from everywhere and views of sunrise and sunset from the very large screened porch. Beds were very comfortable and stayed very cool. All was wonderful and we would definitely go back.

Outstanding Historical Home
We loved our stay at this amazing historical home. If you are intrigued by life in days gone by, you will appreciate the simple splendor here. The view of Charleston harbor is better than any TV or movie. Fort Sumter is right in front of you! Frequent container ship sightings entertain. Sail boats at sunset are lovely. Bring your own binoculars because the ones at the house are all scratched. Original wood floors and shiplap walls lend a simple beauty. The kitchen is exceptionally well-equipped for cooking, baking, etc. Window a/c units cool bedrooms nicely. Keep porch shades down during high sun and house stays impressively comfortable. We spent most of our time on the screened back porch--rocking, talking, laughing and mesmerized by the view. Keep in mind this is an older home with the quirks inherent in such: no central a/c, a few bugs (the kind with legs)--minor drawbacks and a good trade-off for abiding in space occupied by Civil War officers.
