Charming, peaceful Maranacook waterfront camp nestled in the pines
THE CAMP This cozy, recently renovated camp sits right on Maranacook Lake—just 2 ¾ hours from Boston, 1 hour to Portland and the Maine coast. Nestled among majestic pine trees, it features deep-water frontage with a private dock, a mooring, gorgeous sunsets, leaf peeping in the fall, and the call of the loons throughout the spring, summer, and fall. There’s plenty to do in the area—or just relax in this peaceful haven on the lake.
This is a traditional Maine camp, built in 1920, which retains that antique charm but has modern comforts and amenities.
On the 1st floor, there’s a well-equipped kitchen with original pantry and farmhouse sink; a full bathroom with new shower; and a living room with direct access to the large screened-in porch and deck overlooking the lake. The view from the porch is mesmerizing; from your perch among the trees (you'll feel like you're in a treehouse!), you can listen to the loons while you drink your morning coffee, read a book, dine at the country-style table or play board games, and take in the beautiful sunsets in the evening. For chilly mornings, there is a heater in the living room that warms the first floor up in minutes.
The 2nd floor has 2 sunny bedrooms: a master bedroom with queen-sized bed, and a guest bedroom with 2 twins and bunk beds. Ceiling and window fans help to cool off the rooms at night in the summer months.
Linens are not provided (sheets, pillowcases, and towels) since we don't have a washing machine (shoreline zoning). We do provide pillows, blankets, bathmat and hand towel, and dish towels. If this poses a problem (i.e., you are flying to Maine), please contact us as soon as you book to inquire about renting linens.
THE LAKE Maranacook Lake has excellent water quality—great for swimming, fishing (both cold and warm water sport fishing), and boating. The private dock has a ladder for easy access in and out of the water. Our end of the lake is fairly quiet, with limited boat traffic. A tandem (2 person) kayak and 2 paddleboards are available for guests’ use, or rent a boat and explore Maranacook’s 1,800 acres.
THE AREA This part of Maine—the Maine Lakes Region—is spectacular, with rolling hills, farms, orchards, and hiking and mountain biking trails. In Readfield center (~3 miles from camp) there’s a convenience store, post office, a tiny library, and a few restaurants. Or visit Winthrop (10 minutes away) for groceries at Hannaford, Walgreens, ACE hardware, a laundromat, quaint shops, a library, and restaurants. A few nearby attractions and activities include:
• Kennebec Cabin Company, a retail store and café, and home of Cabin Masters reality tv show. (Manchester, 10 min)
• The Theater at Monmouth, which hosts plays in Cumston Hall, an architectural gem listed on the National Register of Historic Places. (Monmouth, 15 min drive)
• Belgrade Lakes Golf Club, an award-winning course ranked as one of the top-100 public golf courses. (Belgrade Lakes, 20 min drive)
• Augusta, Maine’s capital city that still has a historic, small-town feel. Museums, arboretum, restaurants, shops, movies, EV-charging, etc. (20 min drive)
• Brunswick (40 minutes): a quaint college town (Bowdoin College), lovely art museum, main street shops and restaurants, huge antiques "emporium" called Cabot Mill Antiques, and a large flea market open on weekends.
• Maine Maritime Museum, on the Kennebec River in Bath, Maine, focuses on Maine’s waterways in the past, present, and future. (1 hour drive)
• There are many conservation areas and hiking trails in the area.
• Fruit picking and farms: In the summer, R&L Berry Farm has u-pick raspberries. In the fall, Kent’s Hill Orchard offers apple picking. (Be sure to stop at The Apple Shed Bakery while you are there!) There are also a number of family farms in the area with fresh produce and meat.

This is one of our favorite camps we have rented in the past 15 years. It had everything we needed and want in a rental--comfortable bed, reading lamps/tables on both sides, fully appointed kitchen, no clutter but just perfect aesthetics. Kayaking with the loons, reading on the dock or the deck--it was all perfect, with great communication from Elizabeth!
This cottage is absolutely charming and extremely well-supplied with everything for a comfortable convenient stay. We appreciated the comfortable beds, plenty of fans for hot days, large containers of drinking water, fully stocked kitchen, plenty of toilet paper, paper towel, soaps of all kinds, plastic wrap, etc for our entire 2 week stay. The neighbors are very friendly - a welcoming environment. Highly recommend this cottage!
