We had high hopes for this rental, but we were disappointed with our stay. I would not recommend this property. We checked in at night & the property was very dark & poorly lit; both outside and inside. The landscaping was overgrown with numerous branches down around the property.Inside, the home appeared to have only received a surface-level cleaning and was in need of a thorough deep clean. The house felt wet & moldy inside. Also, there was cigarette smell throughout the house. We noticed the displayed rental license was outdated by approximately six months. The smoke and carbon monoxide detectors were not installed; we found them stored in a bin in the closet.During our stay, we experienced Hurricane Lala and were told by the owner that candles and flashlights were available if the power went out. However, there were no candles, and the flashlights did not work because their batteries were corroded & expired. With three small children, we did not feel comfortable staying in a home that was not adequately prepared for a power outage during a hurricane. When we informed the owner that we were leaving early due, his response was that he could not provide a refund. I NEVER asked for one. He never acknowledged that the candles were missing or that the flashlights did not work, despite having told us these emergency supplies were available. There was also no apology or concern about the lack of basic emergency preparedness during a hurricane/Tropical Storm.
The house is beautiful, and the location felt perfect for us. We enjoyed relaxing on the second floor balcony (even doing a little astrophotography!), going to the nearby beaches, and taking day trips out to Hilo and the Volcanoes National Park! I couldn't have asked for a better home base. They also had a good stock of cookware, so we were able to cook most of our meals which saved us both money and travel time for food. This place was really a treat!
Amber was a great host. Very quick to respond. The house and hottub was great! Everything worked as it should and would make a great basecamp for large group. Total of 4 bed plus many futons and couches. As she says … make sure you have information like photo, address, and check in information downloaded or snapshot before you arrive. No cell service! Once inside the wifi was great even with all many teen-agers online :) Nice location to get away.
We chose this lovely home because it is relatively close to volcanoes NP and Hilo, and because the multiple bedrooms worked well for 4 adults and two teens. The tropical jungle forest surrounds the property. It is a couple minutes walk down to a gorgeous black sand beach. The beach requires climbing down natural rock steps, not a problem for us but might be for some. The waves are very big here. The young adults/teens had a blast boogie boarding and playing in the waves, but they took a beating (worth it!) and are strong swimmers. The location is remote so we stocked up in Kona before driving out. The natural food store in Pahoa carried a little bit of everything and is nearby. In Hilo we enjoyed snorkeling at Richardson Ocean park. We would absolutely stay here again!
In general the house was great and as advertised. The jungle setting was awesome and furniture, bedding, appliances were all nice. The night time chirps by the coqui frogs were no joke and surprisingly loud. With that said, there were some aspects that made the stay rough for my family. When we stayed it was pretty warm (83 degrees) and humid, the fans helped but between that and the frogs it was hard to sleep. There were also a lot of geckos in the house which was kind of charming other than the little poops they leave everywhere. The area does have a hippie vibe to it so the beach was entertaining with a lot of nudity and pot smoking. All in all, my family had mixed feelings on this one but I could see how other people may not care as much. Would recommend but may not be for everyone.
