Will and Steph make their year-round home in Georgetown, Texas. Will is a native Texan and grew up in San Antonio, and Steph is a Connecticut native who was tired of being cold. We have two gorgeous kids who love their HEB tortillas! We love our life in Texas, but were looking for an opportunity to escape the summer heat and reconnect with old friends who live in Maine, so the hunt began in 2024 for a Maine vacation home. We purchased the house in the beginning of 2025, and have had a great time this summer optimizing the house and grounds. Repeat guests should plan to see improvements year to year!
One of the great loves of our entire family is food. We have brought in a fairly comprehensive set of cookware so we aren't limited when cooking at home. Steph also likes to bake, so we have a variety of baking items as well. We also all have our favorite spots to eat out--on Thursdays, we get takeout from Best Thai; Will loves to buckle down for a meal at King Eider's or Newcastle Publick House; Steph advocates every weekend for brunch at Sunnyside, and grabs coffee frequently from Rue 77 or the Sherman Maine Coast Bookshop; the kids lobby for Penalty Box for pizza and Round Top Ice Cream to follow.
Another great love of the family is reading. Skidompha Secondhand Books and the Skidompha Public Library are favorite destinations of the kids, and Steph's curated bookshelf in the living room has been populated entirely by secondhand books!
We love the local flavor of the town of Damariscotta. Big box stores aren't permitted, but have no fear--Reny's Underground and the Reny's clothing shop across the street have everything you need. Even if you don't need anything, it's worth a stop for local treats, essential items, and souvenirs, and the attached old-fashioned soda fountain.
We can't wait to share all the things about this place that we love, so please feel free to message us for more info about any points of interest!

Why they chose this property
Since we have good friends in Damariscotta, finding a charming lakeside house in the nearby town of Bremen was a huge stroke of luck! We are relieved to escape the Texas heat here in the summer, and hope to show our kids what a good snowy winter feels like. Steph is glad to reconnect with her New England roots, and Will enjoys resting his eyes on the ubiquitous greenery here during the summer. The whole family (including the dogs) loves swimming and fishing in our lake, as well as hosting gatherings of friends here, with the large deck and huge lawn. We've had a lot of fun exploring the varied restaurants, shops, and activities that Damariscotta, Newcastle, and Round Pond have to offer, especially the many opportunities to consume those Maine classics, lobster and oysters. The character of Maine shines through this area in the historic buildings of Damariscotta, all the craft and antique shops along Route 1, the winding country roads with rambling houses built from salt-box cottages, and the fishing and farming industries that have thrived here for hundreds of years. Between the temperate summer weather, the explosion of lush foliage everywhere the eye can see, the refreshing lakes and ocean, and the essential "New England-ness" of this area, our family has had a first Maine summer we'll never forget--and we look forward to many more!
What makes this property unique
Steph was immediately attracted to the kooky modified A-frame shape of the house, and further details only solidified our desire to make this property our second home. The two cozy bedrooms in the peak of the A are a perfect getaway, and overlook the lawn and the lake. The main floor features large windows on three walls, which look out over the forest, the lake, and the lawn and woods below. The best seat in the house is there on the corner couch right next to the window, preferably with a book in hand. The house is on a slope, so the basement den opens out to the front of the house, while the main floor entrance is actually on the back deck. The deck wraps around the back and side of the house, with a sliding door providing easy access from the main living room; we especially enjoy taking morning coffee out there as the sun rises over the lake. Another unique feature we enjoy is the basement entrance, which consists of a counter-weighted trap door, leading to a staircase down. The basement itself has a 65" television and a huge comfy couch, where we have spent some cozy rainy evenings with the kids. Our son has also curated kids' books, activities, puzzles, and games for entertainment for the whole family. For water recreation, the property has 77 feet of private waterfront and a floating deck out on the water, as well as a 2-seater kayak and inner tubes. In the winter, the lake ice is thick enough for skating and ice fishing, and don’t miss out on sledding in the Maine snow! Overall, the home has charm to spare, but has also functioned wonderfully as a long-term vacation home for our family.
