About this property

Enjoy a Secluded Location on Mount Desert Close to Acadia National Park

Enjoy a secluded location close to the middle of the Island – the perfect spot to relax in the summer sun, walk in the woods, or take a 5 minute walk to nearby Somes Pond for swimming or kayaking. Yet, only a short drive to Southwest Harbor or Bar Harbor. Also, there are 4 separate lakes and swim areas within 3 miles! The high cathedral ceiling of the main room and many windows open to the south onto a large deck and an expansive lawn secluded from the sound of traffic. The basement and main living space have air conditioning.
The house sits on a 2 acre lot and is very private with woods on all 4 sides. The owner maintains an apartment above the attached garage that he occupies with his wife, with separate entrance and no window views to the lawn or adjacent house. Located nearly 800 feet from the nearest road, the sound of birds is all you will hear. The home has 3 bedrooms: 2 bedrooms with queen beds and the other with twin beds, with additional sleeping options in the office and recreation room. A large, southern facing living room and dining room with a sliding glass door provides lots of sunshine and easy access to the front deck. The kitchen is fully equipped with a dishwasher, large refrigerator, and all the typical kitchen appliances and supplies. The two bathrooms compliment one another: one is a self-contained bathroom with the shower, sink and toilet all in one room. The other bathroom has a washer/dryer and sink in one room with the walk-in shower and toilet in an adjoining room. This allows more people access to getting ready, do the laundry, etc. The walkout basement is fully furnished with 2 futons, a 49' flat screen TV, books, and games for the whole family. The 5,000 square front lawn provides plenty of space to play wiffle ball, horseshoes, run around, and generally enjoy the Maine outdoors, while the side lawn is fenced in and great for young children or pets. A covered brick patio offers a barbecue area.

Wonderful House, Wonderful Location

The Mount Desert house was great for our family gathering (5 adults). Everyone had a space of their own. The house included a full kitchen and sufficient seating for meals. The central location on the island provided great access to Bar Harbor, both the eastern and western portions of the island, and the mainland.

Great Location!

We enjoyed our stay and Michael was a great host! The house was great for kids and they especially enjoyed a big tub of legos and a rope swing outside. We liked how close we were to Acadia. There was a pizza place just 7 minutes away and a one mile trail you could take to see the sunset on the ocean just 5 minutes away!

MDI Retreat

A very lovely property tucked away at the end of a wooded drive. This is a great house with everything you could possibly need. There were only 2 of us, but the house can accommodate quite a few more comfortably. Michael is a great host and was very helpful.

Peace and Quiet

This house is in a great location equal distance between Bar Harbor shops/restaurants and the quiet side of the Island line Seal Cove and The Seawall. The house had wverything we needed for our stay and the host Michael is a a kind man. There are stairs to the bedrooms just so you are prepaired. I would highly recommend it.

Amazing host, gorgeous, comfy property

We arrived during a tropical storm- trees and power lines coming down en route. Power soon went off in the house, but our Super Host, Mike, provided candles, flashlights, water- all we needed. Even started a fire for us in the woodstove so we’d be warm and cozy. He made a challenging time enjoyable! When weather cleared, the location was close to fun hikes and an easy trip to Bar Harbor.

A great spot near everything

We had a lot of family staying in the house together for 2 weeks, and everyone enjoyed it. It's nice and secluded, but close to everything. 15 minutes to Bar Harbor, Seal Cove or the Cadillac Mountain entrance, 10 minutes to Southwest Harbor, 20ish minutes to Ellsworth. Michael is a great host who responded immediately to any questions. And the house had everything we could want, right down to tools for cracking open lobsters!

Country location but close to the action

This was a nice secluded home less than a half hour from Bar Harbor, so we had a great balance between peaceful relaxation and fun activities. The house was clean, plenty of room, with all amenities. The owner respected our privacy and was not at all intrusive, but we did see him on occasion. The fenced-in yard was a great plus for the dog. The Wi-Fi was not reliable during our stay, and our Verizon cell service was pretty weak in the entire area. If you have to do any work while you are there that may be a challenge.

Nice place but safety was a concern

The listing states you won’t really see the owner, but we saw him basically every day of our stay. A huge red flag for us was that the door between the garage and main house only locks from the owners side. For safety purposes, we would have like to have a lock from our side of the door. I think this is very important for people to know before booking!! The rental was clean & nice. The upstairs bathroom did have a musty odor that never seemed to go away. Location - it is 15-20 minutes from Bar Harbor and Acadia. The drive was not bad, but just something to keep in mind if you plan to drive back and forth multiple times a day. The fenced in yard was a big + for our dog and safety as this property is very remote in the woods.

Family getaway

The property was clean and had everything we needed. When I contacted the owner (who I knew lived in the adjacent apartment from previous reviews) and told him we would be getting in late and asked if he could have all of the beds ready he cheerfully did so. This property accommodated our large family of 8, my only dislike of the property was that the upstairs was hot (we were there at the end of July). We discussed this with the owner and he mentioned that he may have to install an air conditioner unit upstairs). I definitely wouldn’t discount this house for that reason. This property was conveniently located only 17 minutes from most everything in Acadia; however, at first having to drive that 17 minutes to get anything was not convenient (although there was a gas station very close that we didn’t check out). But one of the best things about the property being a little remote is that it was away from the hustle and bustle of the tourists and business. The yard was huge and hard plenty of room for my boys to play in. The flowers were lovely. We enjoyed sitting on the porch and having breakfast one morning. I would say here again with a big crowd.

Very comfortable, spacious and quiet home.

We were very impressed with the property, specially given we had two dogs. The ease of letting them roam around the fenced area was a bonus for us and them. The location is also the best. Bar Harbor, Northeast Harbor are both less than 15 minutes away. Southwest Harbor about 10 minutes, and Freshies just up the road has everything you need in a pinch. Only reason I did not give 5 stars on overall rating is that we felt a little odd given the owners lived in the same building and would spend time outside in the afternoon while we were there. Our dogs do not do well with outside distractions, so we had to kennel them up for periods in the afternoon. Other than that I must say Michael and Pam did the best to make sure we felt welcome and comfortable and are very accommodating homeowners. Lastly, the flowers in the property are amazing and well tended. Really enjoyed them and the dragonflies they attracted.

Acadia 2023 Family Trip with Adult Kids!!! and puppy

Nice house as advertised. The only negatives are there's a leak in the downstairs bathroom sink faucet. Not a big problem but could be addressed. Also the downstairs shower drain isn't in the lowpoint of the shower floor, thus water pools up. There's a small squeegee in the shower that I used to redirect water to the drain after showering, but it was a minor inconvenience. The outdoor lobster cooker was great. (I need one in my life LOL!!!). The upstairs bedrooms were a bit warm according to our kids. We didn't use the outdoor fireplace (chiminea) because it was directly under an evergreen tree. Didn't want to cause a forest fire. I suggest it gets moved away from there. The yard for the dog was great.

Great Location

Great location. Very secluded but yet super close to Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park, and all other popular locations. Neighbors were barely visible in the distance, surrounded by trees. The property owner was very friendly and helpful. We had a great vacation with family including our Goldendoodle, Willow! The area was very welcoming to dogs, and she went nearly everywhere with us, including restaurants and some stores. It was our first time traveling to Maine, and we’ll definitely be back!

Large flexible space with great location

Michael's place worked well for our large group. The space is flexible and accommodated many adults, it may not work as well with small children if you want to be all on one floor. We did have a lot of questions and Michael was very responsive. It may help to have a guide with home info+checkout instructions available. The listing set our expectations very nicely - lots of space, plenty of linens, fully equipped kitchen but don't expect the ritz carlton. I would definitely stay there again!

Quiet and very convenient

Property is in fantastic location, minutes from pretty much everything you want and need. Despite that, the wooded lot feels very quiet and private. Home is very well appointed (fantastic cinema system for evening movies!). An air conditioning unit downstairs is a bonus in Maine but despite it being warm we never needed it as the house stays plenty cool enough with the windows open. The property was also very clean so full marks there too!

Nice, comfortable stay!

We had a great time staying at Michael’s place for a week. The house was located about a 15-min drive from many Acadia hikes and Bar Harbor, serving as a great base to explore the region. The living and dining room were perfect for our group of 5 plus dogs. The fenced yard was perfect for the furry ones. The kitchen was super well-stocked and comfortable to cook in. Michael was super helpful so I recommend the stay!

Great location - close to everything but so quiet!

This was a great space for our week in Acadia. We are regular visitors to MDI and this was our first time staying in Somesville, which is wonderfully situated between both sides of the island. 20 minutes from Bar Harbor, less than 10 to the quiet side mountains. The house was well-appointed and had everything we needed. The layout is great and gives everyone their own space to retreat. The house itself is set back into the woods making it feel as though it's really off the beaten path (we were visited by several deer!), but it's not - truly the best of both worlds. Our dog was welcomed warmly and he loved the space as well. Mike was extremely responsive and easy to work with. We wouldn't hesitate to return to this beautiful property!

Perfect space for our family

Loved staying here! Plenty of space, both indoors and out. We wanted a place that would provide gathering space for our family, as well as private sleeping areas. In addition, a lovely outdoor space provided our pup a place to romp and a perfect place for a cup of coffee in the morning and cocktails in the evening. The location was perfect - right in the middle of MDI, and very quiet. Mike was very helpful and responsive. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay!

About the host

Hosted by Michael Bush

Host profile image
Pam grew up on Mount Desert Island. She was born in Bar Harbor and lived in Northeast Harbor with her 4 brothers and sisters and parents. We moved to Somesville and this house in 2002, when Pam began working in the local school system, where she is retired from being the principal in Tremont. We have two grown sons and a family Pet, Posey, an 18 lb 'Bug'. We love the island and living on it. It is a beautiful place but even more than that, you can do so many things: swim, fish, climb mountains, walk on carriage trails, go boating, kayaking, canoeing, lots of places to swim in both fresh and ocean water, and most of all, it is simply one of the most beautiful places you could ever see.

Why they chose this property

This property is central on Mount Desert Island, giving you great access to the entire park, and both sides of the Island. Whether you choose the 'busy' commercial side of the Island where the majority of the park is, or the 'backside', where there are still plenty of park offerings, but also the quieter communities of Southwest Harbor and Tremont. The home is secluded. You will barely see the nieghbor's property on one side. A large lawn and garden provide summer enjoyment, and the ability to sit on the deck and look onto the large Pine trees and nearby woods. Trimmed in pine with pine tongue and groove ceiling and large pine beams, the main room is the perfect invitation to the great outdoors, whether you open all the windows and let the breeze blow through and up through the sky lights, or look out at the dew upon the pines and flowers, we hope you'll enjoy things as much as we do.

What makes this property unique

One of my favorite attributes of my home is the location. It is centrally located on the island. I can drive to all sides of the island and off the island in about 15-20 minutes. This is a huge benefit! As I mentioned before, our home is surrounded by woods but we are minutes away from an Art Gallery, a small museum, and the town library. Tall pines sway in the summer breezes, and large oaks thrive just down the hill from the house. Along with this, I love the huge windows that face out to the lawn, trees, and blue sky. Every one who visits us always comments on how nice and airy our home is. Finally, the home is large enough for a family gathering. The large basement tv/recreation space and upstairs airy dining/family room space each provide something for everyone --- quiet and cool and airy and bright....not to mention the ready access to the front deck and yard, and large picnic table on the side deck.
