Our group of 4 adults throughly enjoyed our stay at Carol's Cottage. It is a well maintained, clean, historically decorated cottage that exudes warmth and coziness. The quiet setting is spectacular, and chats on the porch with the birds singing, blooming hydrangeas, and glorious surroundings were our favorite. We highly recommend this property.
This rental is a cute little farmhouse filled with antiques. Very clean and tidy with a beautiful, huge yard and beautiful landscaping. The owners were very easy to communicate with we were in town for our sons Washington and Lee law school graduation and this location was perfect.
A great cottage in a quiet setting, but near town as well. The front porch is a great setting to relax and watch nature. This a great place for a quiet get away.
This is our second stay at this property during an event our daughter was exhibiting in taking place at the horse center. We appreciated the ease of check/in out and that we had a clean, quiet place to call "home" during a hectic weekend.
Awesome experience! Beautiful home and exceptional hosts. Great communication. Clean home in a great location. Grounds and home decor are amazing.

Home away from home
This is a jewel of a cottage. Carol and Bernie are wonderful people and maintain this cottage exceptionally. It is conveniently located to town, yet far enough to not be in the hub-bub; peaceful and serene. I highly recommend this for your next stay in Lexington. ( as long as it doesn’t compete with mine!)
Our group of 5 old friends enjoyed a wonderful, two-night visit to Carol’s Cottage during a period of frigid weather. Carol and Bernie had the charming house warmed up and ready for arrival, and had cleared snow and ice from the driveway and walk. On our first evening, we made good use of the well-appointed kitchen for a home-cooked meal; on the second evening we made the very short drive into Historic Lexington for a nice dinner at Taps. We also enjoyed exploring the downtown shops and indulging in huge burgers for lunch at the Sweet Treat Bakery. Our hosts responded immediately and cheerfully to all messages. The cottage was immaculate. Many thanks.
We had a lovely stay during my W&L 10-year reunion weekend! The view from the porch was stunning and the entire house was comfortable and spacious for 3 adults and 2 children.
This house is super cute, clean and comfy! Everything we needed for the weekend! Nice beds, showers and washer and dryer too! Loved the front porch and the peacefulness of the neighborhood. We were here for a horse center event but also managed to hike on the Chessie Nature Trail which was beautiful and also went to Heliotrope Brewing in Lexington. Great beer and food! We will definitely stay here again!
Love sitting on the front porch overlooking the mountains
Pros: convenient to Virginia Horse Park right around the corner. Outside property beautiful. Wash machine & DryerCons: There were bugs and ants everywhere upstairs and down in the house from the first day until the last. The bottom floor bedroom is tiny. Upstairs TV would not connect to internet, wasnt a big deal we were never there.
We were attending an event at the Virginia Horse Center and this house is within walking distance. Beautiful home and perfect accommodations. We will stay again.
Perfect cottage for a weekend getaway. Tastefully decorated with all the amenities. Host responds quickly. Very clean and close to VMI and W&L. Highly recommend.
Our stay was relaxing and easy….location is excellent with easy access to Historic Route 11 ,
Dining, shopping and Historic Lexington! Homes features books offering a broad range of topics! Sun pattern is beautiful all day! Bedrooms offer
cozy, comfortable beds and furnishings!
We visited for my mother’s 80th birthday and had a wonderful time at the cottage! The home has beautiful views and the front porch was our favorite place to relax and enjoy watching the birds visit and the squirrels play! The kitchen was well equipped, the bed linens were crisp natural cotton, the internet was strong and the layout offered both privacy and space to gather. Thank you for sharing your home!
What a wonderful time we had at Carol's Cottage while our daughter competed locally at the Shenandoah Classic Horse Show (at the Virginia Horse Center). The house was well-appointed and beautiful grounds ensured serene mornings out on the porch. Thank you for letting us stay in your lovely cottage!
My dad wanted to drive on the blue ridge parkway in Virginia, and also visit Lexington. Went online to find a property to stay at since we were going to be there for several days. While researching came across “Carol’s Cottage”. It was perfect for us. It was very close to downtown Lexington but was on a road that was very quiet and felt like you were in the “country”. The front porch has a Mountain View but unfortunately the weather was too cold to sit out there for us “Florida folks”
We stayed busy during our visit. Bernie and Carol are gracious hosts, who were available to us if needed. Everything was perfect at this property and the town of Lexington
We were fortunate enough to get to stay in Carol's Cottage for Easter weekend. The Cottage was exactly what we wanted and the setting is beautiful. We will definitely make another visit to the Cottage.
Me and my friends wanted a place to stay to get away from VMI for the weekend after the Midwinter Formal dance. It was a very nice place, couldn't have asked for better given the great price.

About the host
Hosted by Bernie or Carol Shaw
Carol is originally from Charleston, West Virginia. She moved to Lexington and purchased the Cottage in 2011. She met the "boy next door", Bernie, who is from the Lake District of England. One thing led to another and the British guy and the American girl were married on June 1st, 2013 in the Gazebo in front of their lovely homes!
Why they chose this property
We both purchased our properties because we were drawn to the absolute beauty and peacefulness of the area and the wonderful people that live here.
What makes this property unique
The Cottage is the closest accomodation to the Virginia Horse Center. We are literally right across the street from the Oak Hill Cross Country course. We live on a quiet country lane with very little traffic, but Lexington, the interstate, Walmart, etc are only minutes away. We are the Owners and Managers of our property.
