Nice home. Very Clean. You really can walk everywhere! There were too many ornamental things that had to be moved as we had kids with us. No sheet pans or pizza pans. But, overall very nice place in a lovely neighborhood. We totally enjoyed it!
The property suited our needs. Close to the beach and shops. It had enough tableware and pots and pans. Some 'specialty' kitchen equipment, ie oven trays, rubber spatulas, cutting boards would have been nice.
We had a great time taking our 3 kids, their spouses and our 4 grandchildren on this family vacation. The house had plenty of room for everyone and we were able to walk to nearly everywhere we wanted to go. The outdoor space was great and we enjoyed a fire and making s’mores. The only suggestion I would make for the next people is if you need mixing bowls, cookie sheets or extra blankets make sure you bring them with you. Many things were provided including very nice stove top pans but no cookie sheets or mixing bowls.
Great location for walking to town and the beach along with plenty of space for the kids to be outside playing while at the house. Overall great experience.
My husband and I treated our son and some friends to a weekend in New Buffalo to celebrate his birthday. The house was perfect! Lots of comfortable sleeping areas (3 king sized beds!!!), a wonderful outdoor patio/fire pit, and so close to the beach and downtown. The house was spotless. I would definitely recommend for a family retreat!
My siblings and spouses(55-63)came with my 82 year old mom to relax and fish on our pontoon boat. Lake Michigan and the St Joe river were the perfect avenues for that!
The weather was beautiful and the crowd was light. We enjoyed the perfect location of the home and the wonderful patio.
Our ONLY critique would be that it would be nice to have basic seasoning (we left salt and pepper😂) and more cooking pans, specifically, a couple of cookie sheets.
We had a great time and would book it again!
Great Family Gathering Area, Rain or Shine. Wonderful for Beach.
I was pleasantly surprised when we arrived to find TONs of tables & seating on the side porch! It is not shown in the pictures, but I counted seating for 20+ people. That doesn't even take into account the fire pit area!
I've stayed at several VRBO that friends or family have rented and the listing/reviews always say how clean they are. They were adequate, but not spotless. Whoever they have cleaning this home, I want to hire! My wife is a clean freak and it even passed her inspection.
We had a child under 2 in our group, so it was a bit of a stretch to walk to the beach for her. And depending on how much gear you pack...coolers, umbrellas, chairs...you might be better off driving and parking. We actually paid for parking, then had a couple of the ladies in our group walked back at lunchtime, grab a vehicle and shuttle us back and forth to the beach so we wouldn't lose our parking. We were warned by the parking authority that the lot can fill up. Even though you have paid for the entire day, you might return after lunch and not find a spot to park. The shuttling was a very effective work around.
The two refrigerators was an added bonus, and the mini kitchen (No Oven/Range) in the basement was great. We are early risers, so we could get up and make coffee and lounge on the couch w/o disturbing the rest of the household.
We live in the country in the woods and was concerned when we saw HEALTHY poison ivy growing in the driveway and on the adjacent tree. I had some gloves and was able to pull up the Ivy in the driveway and warned the children and others to stay away from the tree. The yard was in desperate need of mowing. The kids would lose toys in the grass it was so tall (10" at least).
Tons of ceiling fans and lighting. Gratefully the switches were clearly marked.
Guests need to be warned to pull the grill out from the plastic railing on the porch. We noticed the rails were distorted from previous use and didn't want to make it worse.
The ice maker in the fridge was not functioning. We actually had a plumber in our group that looked at it and found a blockage. He believed he got it repaired but did not know where the shutoff valve was to turn the supply water back on. You got a free repair :-). It would have been nice to have more ice trays in lieu of the ice machine.
We Highly recommend this property. Tiny inconveniences were no deal breaker!
Excellent space inside and outside for our group of 10! Close to downtown shopping and grocery store as well as restaurants, a little farther from the beach, but still within a 10-15 minute walk.
A few essential items (cookie sheet/baking pan) were unavailable in the kitchen which would have been helpful (not a deal-breaker). The downstairs doesn't have central air, but one window air conditioning unit in the living room. so bedroom doors needed to be left open. (the only real downside with a baby who needed to sleep & quiet)
Overall, we had an awesome time and highly recommend this property!
The house was comfortable and clean. The big deck and firepit patio offered plenty of room for relaxing with family. It’s a 15-minute walk to the beach and even closer to downtown, so the location is great too!
It was my parents first time to New Buffalo. They really enjoyed the location and proximity to restaurants and beach. The house was cozy and had everything we needed. The only thing we would have changed is having more comfortable seating upstairs. Thanks so much!
This home was perfect for our family get away. The kitchen and downstairs area was great place to gather since we had a one year old sleeping upstairs. The outside porch had more than enough seating for our family of 10. Great distance to downtown and the beach. We had a great time. Would rent again.
We had friends stay here during our wedding week and it was perfect. The house is very spacious and clean. There is a lot of patio space outside and a big yard. The decor is a dated style, but everything is still very clean and well cared for. It didn't feel run down at all. Short walk to the grocery store and shops and restaurants, and not too far from New Buffalo beach either.
This house was just as advertised. Great location! Plenty of space, inside and out. Very clean and very well kept! Our family would definitely go back!
My friends and I celebrated 30 years as friends this weekend and we loved the house. The area was very nice. We had a great time and plan on making this a yearly trip!
We really enjoyed our stay. The home was very clean and spacious with two living areas. There was also plenty of outdoor space for kids to play and/or adults to hang out. It’s also close to down town New Buffalo and the beach. We were able walk walk with little ones to explore and pick up necessities. Great space and great location.
Stay was very nice. Beds very comfortable and huge patio and yard for playing. House well supplied although it could of used a couple rubber spatulas.
Would have been nice to have access to a swimming pool.
We would stay there again.
Overall very pleased, however the kitchen tools were limited, bunk bed mattress was uncomfortable, smoke alarm batteries failed (I replaced in upper bedrooms). We very much enjoyed our stay!
Could walk everywhere! Needed one more bathroom, sharing 2 small ones for 15 people was tough. Outside capacity was great, could hold all of our group comfortably for a cook out. Overall, great stay.

Grew up in Chicago. Came to New Buffalo and purchased a second home away from the hustle and bustle and fell in love with the area. Relocated in 2000 and have loved being in the area since.
Why they chose this property
The Merchant House II was a total renovation and was completed early 2015. This house has all the amenities needed. It has an enormous deck the length of the house and steps down to a custom stone seating area and fire pit with built-in stone grill. It includes mini wall sconce lighting for the walkways and seating area. Greek columns with enhanced lighting for a romantic or relaxing atmosphere.
