The Spy House, Historic 1880s Home, Harpers Ferry
Summary:
Welcome to The Spy House, a beautifully modernized 1880s Federal-style home on Camp Hill, a quiet neighborhood just a ten-minute walk from historic downtown Harpers Ferry. Sleeps eight across four bedrooms, with three full baths, an open-concept kitchen and living area, and a private patio that make it easy for families or groups. Steps to the Appalachian Trail, minutes to Harpers Ferry National Historical Park and the Shenandoah River. Loved by guests for comfort, character, and location.
The Space:
Known as "The Spy House" for its ties to a WWII German spy, this fully restored 1880s home blends historic charm with modern comfort, including dual-zone central heating and air conditioning. The open-concept living room and kitchen make it easy for everyone to gather, and the decorative wood-burning stove adds character (note: fires are not permitted in the stove or anywhere on the property).

The Neighborhood:

Despite its quiet, residential setting, the home is just a 10-minute walk from downtown's shops, restaurants, and the train station, and even closer to major landmarks: the Appalachian Trail Conservancy Headquarters (3 minutes on foot), Jefferson Rock (6 minutes), and John Brown's Fort (13 minutes). Wine lovers can explore nearby Loudoun County vineyards like 868 Estate Vineyards and Breaux Vineyards, craft beer fans can visit Abolitionist Ale Works or Harpers Ferry Brewing, and thrill-seekers can book zip-lining, whitewater rafting, or tubing trips through the Harpers Ferry Adventure Center. The confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers also makes this a top spot for kayaking, hiking the Appalachian Trail, and birdwatching.
Getting Around:
The home is walkable to downtown Harpers Ferry and its Amtrak/MARC train station, making it easy to explore without a car once you're settled in. On-site parking is available for those driving in. A car is recommended for reaching area wineries, spas, and restaurants a short drive away.

Couldn’t ask for a better place to stay. The host was very easy to communicate with and the place was spotless. Close to downtown, hiking and biking trails. If we ever comeback we would stay here again.
The house was lovely at an ideal location in Harpers Ferry. The host was friendly and made sure we had everything we needed. Our extended family enjoyed our stay. Highly recommended!!!
The house was adorable and wonderfully appointed with an incredible location - walking distance to a lovely coffee shop, scenic overlook, historic cemetery, and Appalachian trail access, and 10m lower Harper’s Ferry attractions. Parking was convenient and we hope to return.
Great location, convenient parking right in front of the house. Easy walking down the hill to the rivers and trails as well as restaurants and shops. House is clean, organized and thoughtfully stocked for kitchen and bathroom use. It’s comfortable and a great getaway. Absolutely no complaints- we enjoyed our stay very much!!
Our stay was wonderful! The house was beautifully restored and decorated, very clean and had everything needed for a comfortable and memorable stay. The kitchen was stocked with everything needed for meal prep and eating in. Loved, loved, loved the location! Quiet, street with a a beautiful backyard and so close the the center of town. We found multiple paths to explore nearby. Our favorite spot in town was the Battle Grounds Coffee Shop. We took advantage of the availability of historic sites, quaint shops and recreation all so close by. Highly recommend!
Had a great stay at Jay's Spy House. Super location and nicely modernized house in the very heart of Harper's Ferry historic district. Jay was very attentive to anything we needed, which turned out to be very little, since everything was provided. Definitely recommend at stay here if visiting HF.
Everything about this place was excellent. The host was responsive and accommodating. The house was very nice, clean, and roomy, and the kitchen had everything we needed. The yard, location, and parking were big plusses too.
The Spy House was a wonderful stop on our bicycle trip from Pittsburgh to DC. It was close to restaurants and shopping, and was sparkling clean and beautifully decorated.

About the host

Thanks for taking the time to check out my house. I am a photographer and a home renovation geek. I bought this house which was a diamond in the rough. To make the space consistent with the way people now live, I opened up the first floor to make for a very social and inviting space. I have put countless hours of sweat equity into the house to make it what it is today. Please be respectful as it is more than just a typical rental property.
Why they chose this property
A friend who lives in town introduced me to Harpers Ferry about twenty years ago. There are amazing hiking trails, swimming spots, fishing holes, vegetable stands, flea markets, antique shops and civil war sites. This is a wonderful, beautiful and peaceful community.
What makes this property unique
The house is located in the historic part of town know as Camp Hill. It is walking distance to the shops and sites of lower town as well as the train station. even on the busiest of summer days in town it stays quiet up here. you can sit out on the front porch in the swing and read a book, listen to the wind chimes and enjoy a cold drink.
