Needs a little love

Patty responded promptly when I booked and accommodated my fee schedule request. While the pictures in the listing are accurate as to the inside of the house, the outside was anything but. We are a bunch of outdoor loving people and we didn't want to be outside at all. The weeds were overgrown, the flowers were totally dead and dried out and some of the furniture was falling apart. There is yellow "caution tape" wrapped around portions of the deck. The covering over part of the deck was ripped off and hanging by a nail. It would appear that the owner purchased it, lived in it for a time and then simply left. There are personal belongings everywhere, including bank statements, receipts and a gun in the closet. There is simply too much stuff, if un-useable pots, pans, crock pots, etc. were removed and clutter was removed so there is room for guests belongings it would be almost perfect inside the house. The 4 bedrooms were spacious and the mattresses were comfortable. We all slept well. The bathrooms were large and functional though one of them had odd handles on the shower that didn't have an end point. There was a learning curve when it came to trying to turn the water off. If you need a 4 bedroom place and aren't going to spend a lot of time there it's a good spot. But, if you want to hang out on the decks and BBQ dinner, I'd look for some place else. This gem has such potential and looks as though it was beautiful in it's heyday. Right now it just needs a bit of love and care.

I will be truthful Deb, the closet behind the TV where personal items are located is supposed to be kept locked at all times; I will speak to staff about that and also check it myself when there. Yes, there was an accident with the deck and it is taped off for your safety as I had informed you prior to your arrival. The workmen fixing it ran into more issues in purchasing the proper beams than they had anticipated, shopping isn't as easy here as in bigger towns, and this caused a delay in completing the repairs. In hindsight it sounds as though you would rather we have cancelled the reservation but I found out about the delay at the last minute from the workman. Regarding the pots, pans, and crockpots, these are stored there for my personal hosting use as the seasons come about and this in no way hinders guests ability to house their belongings as there are a total of five closets in the four bedrooms that are for guests to use, as well as dressers. I have been advised by my colleagues that also rent that I should place locks on those downstairs closet doors but have yet to do so, obviously. There are automatic sprinklers on a timer that waters the garden areas each and every night; I have a gardener that tends to the areas that require weed eating, mowing and general yard clean-up. I do not allow work of that type to happen while guests are there so herein lies the catch: the majority of growth happens in the spring/summer months and this is also when the property is occupied the most...very difficult for the gardener to keep up when he is told not to disturb vacationers. Granted, I am not there often, I allow my trusted cleaning lady to attend to the property for me but I cannot whatsoever recall where business papers have been left as I do not now nor have I ever lived in the property. I will be sure to check this right away. The statements that the furniture is "falling apart" and all of the flowers are dead is simply not true. The yard areas are inspected for dead bushes, shrubs, etc. to detect fire hazards and the only deficiency the property received was the dead tree next to the barn that I had mentioned would have a workman attending to due to the fire hazard. What I CAN say is I am truly sorry that the property did not live up to your expectations. When creating this vacation property years ago I tried to set it up in such a way that I would like to stay in if I were traveling and have certain amenities that I value. All of your comments will be utilized for improvement however and again, my sincere apologies for your disappointment.

Cluttered and Worn

First time ever that we were hugely dissatisfied with Home Away rental. Unclean and cluttered. We (4 adults) spent the first evening cleaning the rooms we would use most, kitchens baths and bedrooms, including stripping and laundering bedding, mopping floors and washing in/out refrigerator. The oven and range hood dirty beyond use. This was communicated to owners at the time. We paid a cleaning fee as part of rental and commented on this to owners who indicated they had problems with recent cleaning crew. It was clear that no one had cleaned even so far as to ensure beds and bathrooms were done. Blinds on all windows were layered with dust, doilies on every surface, lifted and dust design was left behind. Decks in disrepair and outside furniture needed to be cleaned before used. The list is long and could say more. Instead chalking this up to a ‘live and learn’ experience to be shared.

Very isolated and quiet with many of the comforts of home.

Peace, quiet and all the privacy you could imagine yet a short drive into town in both directions.
