About this property

2 bdrm apt in Sydney 200+ Year old gently haunted home

A labour of love this 2 bedroom apartment is located in the city of Sydney. This home is over 200 years old, renovated from the basement to the roof and other than a few bumps in the night, guests have not encountered too many ghosts . We are well stocked with several varieties of gourmet coffee/teas. There is a large back yard with lounging chairs and a swing. It is a very clean comfortable and warm space. ( air conditioner in the summer and heat pump in the winter) I offer breakfasts during your stay, so please inform me of your choice of eggs & toast or cereal or oatmeal. The space is for 4 and has a comfortable futon that will fold down to accommodate another 2 persons. There is free wifi Netflix and parking is included. Guests are free to snack on any foods items.
I keep an open communication going from the time my guests book. I am available whenever you need any information or have any questions. If the guest wishes to share a chat and a cup of coffee I'm quite open to it. If the guest prefers their privacy that is respected also.

Wonderful time. Great stay, excellent host. The ghost was no bother at all! Really had a great time and fun experience for first time vrbo users. The fresh bread and chocolate cake were exceptional and a beautiful added touch. The host went above and beyond providing the rich history of the house. Sadly we did not have time to take advantage of the painting supplies offered but really enjoyed our stay. No complaints.

Just what we needed

It's comfortable and clean. The shower is a little funky but we knew that going in. The beds are comfortable. All the appliances worked. Elizabeth was great. Very communicative and warm. She brought us food before we arrived, which was much appreciated.

I'm glad everything was well during your stay! I take it a funky shower was the height and not the smell😀I enjoy putting in a little something with a special toch, when it comes to foods. Glad your dad is well!

Utilitarian

If you are simply looking for a comfortable bed in Spartan surroundings, in an old neighborhood, you will find this crash pad to be quite adequate. And it was certainly affordable. The futon in the living room can serve to sleep maybe one or two adults, but I think that overall, the space is adequate for 2 adults. This apartment has a lot of potential, once the remodeling is completed. We were able to prepare simple meals in the kitchen, which was equipped with the very basics and had a lovely view of Sydney harbor. Downtown Sydney is very quaint, and not too far from this location. Elizabeth is delightful to work with.

You are spot on when you mention "old neighborhood". Our house is very bare bones but 200 years old and the 1st one here at that time. I'm happy you enjoyed your stay in our "spartan home." It is not much, we know but we are happy here. Since you stayed we have renovated a bit more and added more comfortable furniture and another bed.Thank you for the compliment referring to me as delightful to work with and please do stop by next time you're in town.

Not quite what they say

Place was neat and tidy. Place needs new or newer beds we had to place books under the mattress that was sitting on another mattress that was not big enough for the bed frame. The other bed was a futon base with a mattress that was to big for the frame you had to sleep in a u shape. Netflix did not work reached out to the host but still waiting on a reply. House has 2 apartments in it other guest downstairs had same issues with the Netflix and had reached out to the host and had not got a response either. Location has good, quite area.

Dear Patti, Thank you for your response. We have since changed out the beds to very cosy replacements. We always reply asap to our guests, yet at that time we were in no service area on an island. As far as the Netflix issue we are not able to control when the Netfix is temporarily down. The tenant downstairs at that time had the same issue, since all the Netflix accounts were down. I'm happy the rest of your stay was great and you enjoyed the groceries we provided. Kindly, Elizabeth

Two night stay Whitney Pier

We stayed coming to a family reunion and only were there to sleep and shower. The place was clean but unfinished in the main bedroom with primer on the walls only and paint on carpets. The other room was finished. Kitchen had countertop unattached I nearly knocked down. Shower is a sit down only as described. Im 5’4 and had to kneel. Great for 8 yr olds to stand to shower. Our bed in the main bedroom was broken and was at a 30 degree angle with a mattress on top of mattress. Bed frame was the wrong size for mattress and broken underneath as we discovered trying to fix it in the middle of the night. The floor was more comfortable. Host provided breakfast items and clean towels and linens. Location is Whitney Pier which should be in the ad.

The house is in Sydney, so is not necessary to state which suburb it is in. Whitney Pier is a very safe and culturally diverse area, which some people like, while others do not, depending on the people. The unit was damaged after hurricane Fiona, which was explained prior to your arrival, (which was why we were hesitant to have people stay)as was the height of the sit down shower described both by me and in the listing. You assured me it was fine. The only valid complaint you had was the broken bed, for which I do apologize for. Had you let me know I would've happily changed the bed out, this way i would have been able to remedy it had you told me.

Great rooms but terrible mattress.

Excellent accommodation, but the mattress in the main bed is simply unsleepahble for two people because it has far too little support.

Gorgeous house. Stressful stay

We were travelling with 6 well-behaved cats and one dog due to family deathand attempted to book a “pet friendly” location with this host. She contacted us and said that the location we tried to book was not available but offered a different location—a 2700 square-foot home. We asked if it was pet friendly and she told us that there was a dog allergy and that it would be no problem as long as the dog stayed in the “foyer.” When we arrived she told us that her son was allergic to all animals and that they would all have to stay in the foyer. She then told us that her son would have to have access to the foyer all night because he was staying in an RV outside and needed access to the breaker box inside the foyer. There was no lock on the door between foyer and rest of the residence. We were worried about the animals getting out if her son came in through the outside door to the foyer during the night and suggested that he use the patio door, come in through the residence, and access the foyer that way. She refused. We asked if the cats could stay in cement floor bedroom that was beside the entryway/foyer if my daughter used her own bedding. She refused. My daughter slept in the car with the cats because she was worried that they would be let out in the middle of the night. Despite claims of severe allergies, there was a cat play structure in the residence, pet food dishes on the balconies, and cat treats in the kitchen. We carefully cleaned the bedroom and entryway before we left, leaving no trace of any of the animals. Several days after we left she posted a message in the chat claiming that the animals had urinated and defecated on the the floor and that there were paw prints all over the house. Neither was true. The cats are all litter-box trained and the dog is completely house-trained. The soiled litter and the dog “poop bags” were all disposed of appropriately. Her dishes were not used to feed animals. She billed us an additional large amount for “pet cleanup” even though the cats had spent the night sleeping in the car with my daughter and I had cleaned and washed the floors and wiped down 2 rooms because we were worried about her son’s allergy. She also made comments on the chat and in person about activities happening inside the entryway/bedroom that she could only have known if she had seen inside. We thought that she must have looked through the windows, however there is a real estate listing for the location listing security cameras

You wrote this review on a unit that you haven't even stayed in. I felt sorry for you, since you let me know that there was a death in the family 3 months prior to booking. I was very kind in offering you our 2700 sq ft home in the country instead of the smaller unit that you had tried to book, which was under renovations, for the same low price. You in turn, took advantage of the situation. I wrote in multiple messages that under no circumstances were animals allowed past the foyer (since this is our home, and one of my sons is highly allergic to dogs & animals.) I also had let you know that you would have the entire place to yourselves, other than the foyer, which my son needed to enter since the electrical room is there, and we needed access to the breaker panel since we stayed in the RV to let you stay in our home. We also bought you a good supply of groceries, and were extremely great hosts to you, which you know, Shelley. When my son and I came to the door to enter the foyer, we saw the dog cross the threshold and enter our home, which you of course, denied to our faces. At that time, we also counted 7 cats in our foyer. We couldn't even get in through the front door since you had it blocked with our shoe tree, to accommodate all your litter boxes. Your daughter then yelled at us to go wait on our back deck in the dark. Looking back, we should have asked you to find other accomodations at that point, yet we took pity on you since you informed us that the previous host pretended they weren't home. The previous host likely saw the 6-7 cats and dog in tow (which they likely had no idea about as well.) and that is probably why wisely they wouldn't let you in. Even after talking with you on the deck, you asked for another favor, to allow the cats in the living areas of our house. When we told you, no, you did it anyway. I have never had a guest act so deplorably, when only kindness was shown to them. Maybe next time you stay somewhere with a fleet of animals in tow, make sure your host don't have a Ring Doorbell. You were told this was our private home and were informed of the public area having video surveillance, so saying we were looking in windows to excuse your selfish behavior is disgusting. I truly feel bad for anyone having the misfortune renting to you. I also wanted to let you know, that you also left a mess in the home with your animals. Thankfully though, VRBO reinmursed us as we were unable to go back to our home for over a week. Elizabeth

Pleasent and comfortable place to lay your head

First and foremost, the owner is kind and pleasent to deal with (true Cape Brettoner). This is a lovely little home in the Whitney Pier area of Sydney, a few minutes drive to city center. As we were traveling the extended area it was a perfect starting point each day. If you are looking to walk around Sydney you may want to look downtown (expect to pay a much more), however it wasn't that far to drive and park when we did go to the pier and casino. Again this upper section of the house is a great place to end your day and relax, perfect for 3-4 people as it is not large but comfortable. The not so good... expect to have a bath as the shower is next to the slope of the roof, though I did shower while kneeling a couple of times. That was all I could complain about, it really was perfect for our needs and the price was right!

Clean and Cozy Apartment

Stayed for a few nights and had a great time. The owner was very helpful and kind. Overall the apartment was great, very clean and comfortable. There were a couple of small things that bring this to a four star review, like a lack of head room in the shower (you are better off just having a bath), and a door at the top of the stairs to the apartment would be nice. Otherwise no complaints, and would definitely stay again if we are back in the area!

Thank you for your kind words and we now have a door to the apartment. When you stayed it was vacant downstairs, so you had complete privacy, but since another unit has been completed, the door is necessary. The shower is as stated in the description and was installed by a not so swift contractor. Please come back anytime you are in the Sydney area, where you'll find more modern furniture and updates to this unit.
