This expansive retreat accommodates up to 8 adults, per Bedford County Planning and Zoning Ordinance and the Short-Term Rental Permit (children aged 2 and under are welcome and excluded from this count). This limit aligns with the approved 4-bedroom septic system.

Purchased in 2017, this gorgeous home has undergone a stunning renovation inspired by HGTV power couple, Chip and Joanna Gaines. With a blend of farmhouse charm and lake house vibes, it features an open-concept design, quartz countertops, a farmhouse sink, and stainless steel appliances. Upgrades include a 32x12 deck, a new roof, complete redesign of the upstairs and downstairs living space, custom barn doors, refreshed bathrooms, and energy-efficient windows, and rustic laminate flooring. The dock features a 10x10 floater, and the landscaping has been revitalized for outdoor enjoyment.

The basement, finished in 2018, offers a large bedroom, a full bathroom, and a recreation room, making it a bright, functional space for all. Nestled in the peaceful Pine Ridge community on 1.5 acres, this home offers privacy, stunning lake views, and a tranquil setting ideal for morning or evening strolls.

The house features four bedrooms and three full bathrooms, including a primary suite with a queen bed, two additional upstairs bedrooms with queen and bunk beds, and a spacious basement bedroom with two queen beds. This property, with its deep-water access ranging from 10 to 12 feet, offers exceptional lakefront living.

As the home operates on a well and septic system, please be mindful of usage during your stay.

Fantastic location - everything you need in a SML vacation home

Property is in an excellent location - on a quiet and calm section of the lake which was perfect for on the lake fun. The house is extremely well kept and spacious. Everything has been replaced / refurbished in the home and the house came with all the amenities you need. We enjoyed jumping in the lake and playing with the toys (kayaks, floats, etc). There are plenty of beds and several living spaces so you can spread out. Would definitely stay again.

Perfect trip!

This property was outstanding! It was the cleanest, most organized, spacious and fun place we have ever rented on HomeAway. Thank you for having so many fun activities for kids and adults with ping pong, kayaks, paddle boards, etc!

The place was beautiful! We had a blast playing ping pong, air hockey, kayaking, & paddle boarding. The kitchen had everything we needed to have a home cooked meal and a fire pit for s’mores. We will definitely be booking again!

Perfect getaway

Every detail of this property is beautiful. From the decor, to the view, to the little extras, we enjoyed all that it has to offer. It's one of the most well equipped properties we've ever rented. The access to the kayaks and paddle boards really made the trip, especially for the kids. My favorite time was sipping my morning coffee on the rocking Adirondack chairs down by the water. Wonderful trip!

Best Vacay!

We had the best time at Camp Run-a-Muk! We all felt very at home and you can tell there was a lot of love and hard work that went into making it feel like home away from home! Holly was great and there via text at a moments notice, if need be. Thank you Holly and Steve for sharing your home with us, we will definitely be back!

Perfect #COVID vacation

We had to cancel our original trip because of COVID and decided to do something a bit more isolated and local. The house was extremely clean and just as pictured on the website. The space was perfect for two families. We were fortunate to have great weather and rented a boat for 3 of the days and were able to use the dock at the house. Holley and Steve were gracious hosts and were great at communication. Would definitely stay here again.

SML stay

Camp Run-amuck is a wonderful property. Our entire immediate family stayed comfortably at the house which is a fantastic property. Plenty of room for the twelve of us with no crowding what so ever. The kayaks, paddle boards and boat docks were well utilized. The home is furnished nicely and the kitchen is very well stocked with pots, pans utensils etc. We could not have asked for better hosts and the communication was outstanding. We are planning on making this home a staple in our summer vacation plans.

Terrific family time!

We enjoyed our 3 night family stay here. The beds, neighborhood, and furniture was comfortable and the water toys and ping pong a lot of fun! That area of the lake was quiet and safe without a lot of boat traffic and nice and deep for jumping in. One item to note if bringing elderly folks--the lot is flat relative to lakehouses in the area but seemed more like a hill to a grandma with arthritis--It was an easily negotiated incline with the nice gravel path and she did say it wouldn't keep her from coming again. And the chairs on ground level were fabulous as was the fire pit at night. Overall an A+ spot and lovely home we were thankful to borrow and would be glad to rent again.

Great location. Beautiful views.

The house sits on a scenic lot with beautiful views of the lake and a dock. The host provided very detailed instructions for access and house rules. The house had rafts, paddle boards and life jackets available. We did not appreciate having to load trash into our vehicle and driving it 2 miles down the road. For a 125$ cleaning fee, a trash receiptical should have been made available at the property.

Super lakehouse

Bigger than we expected. Updated and awesome design. Really appreciated the kayaks and paddle boards and life vests. Plenty of room to spread out. Took advantage of ping pong table and foozball table. Appreciated kitchen supplies and spices. Great info and recommendations from owners on things to do and shopping. (picked blueberries and Homestead Creamery). S'mores by the firepit. We had vacationed with the family at North/South Carolina beaches for 10 years and were delighted for this change of pace. Fantastic week.

Beautiful location, excellent stay!

We had a fantastic week at Camp Run-A-Muk and will definitely return in the future! The location was perfect... just 10-15 minutes from Mitchell's Marina (where we rented our boat and had an excellent lunch!), about a 20 minute boat ride from the dam, where we were fortunate to witness a flyover of 3 F-15's on our last full day! The property is beautiful, well kept, and updated. The owners have put a ton of work into it, and it really shows. They have an awesome game room downstairs with a giant Connect Four, ping pong, and foosball, but we spent so much time in the lake that we didn't utilize that much. We used one of the kayaks quite a bit, and it was an added bonus that those and the paddle boards were included. Definitely a successful first (of many, I'm sure!) trips to Smith Mountain Lake, and a property I would 100% rent again! To top if all off, the owners were incredibly helpful and kind, and an absolute pleasure to work with!

Amazing time at Camp-Run-a-Muk!

My family and I have been going and renting a house at SML for over 20 years and Camp-Run-a-Muk didn’t disappoint and is at the top of the list as far as houses go! It’s always hard to find a house with 4 bedrooms to fit our family; my parents, sisters and significant others, and now my children. We were welcomed with flowers (arranged by a local company with an amazing purpose), local wine and wine glasses, local honey, soap from a local vendor, and coffee. Such a wonderful touch and sweet gesture to start off our vacation! Communication with the owner was very easy and Holley was extremely welcoming. House is renovated and decor is on point. Has a kitchen table large enough for a family of 10 which was amazing for us and rare to find when renting. Kitchen has everything you’ll need while on vacation, plus a few bonus items; large coffee mugs for those early morning with young kids that don’t know how to sleep in yet, spices, aluminum foil and press and seal in the pantry. Located in a quiet part of the lake, not much boat traffic which is great for little ones learning to swim. Nice dock with 2 picnic tables. Would recommend bringing a chair or two down for some additional seating/lounging but not always necessary with how much time we spent in the lake. First house we’ve stayed at that had a pad which was a hit with the adults and kids! Very nice fire pit and sitting area for s’mores or a cold beverage after the end of a great day on the lake. Would totally recommend this home to anyone wanting to rent at SML!

Best vacay ever!

We cannot say enough wonderful things about Camp Run-a-Muk! Holley and Steve were quick to respond to all the questions we had prior to our stay and recommended some great spots for dining. The house is simply beautiful. You can clearly see all of the hard work that was put into this home. We enjoyed lazy days on the lake, paddle boarding, kayaking and fishing. Our nights were filled with s’mores by the fire pit and family game nights. This house has everything you need and want in a vacation home. Hands down, this was a 10/10 vacation!

Another great week at the lake

Clean and well equipped. Kitchen is loaded and stock of spices and oils was much appreciated. Plenty of outdoor furniture, life jackets, kayaks, paddleboards and a foam float. Extended family of deer seemed to hang out in the yard. Kids enjoyed fishing from the dock and all the water activities. Everyone voted to return for a third time next year.

About the host

Hosted by Holley Scheffel

Host profile image
Steve and I both grew up in Northern Virginia just a short distance from Washington, DC. He went to Annandale High School in Fairfax County and I went to Gar-Field in neighboring Prince William County. We are full-time residents of Huddleston and live at a local marina while our house is occupied in the summers.

We have one son, Trevor, who was recently married. We also have two very energetic water pups! We have a beautiful and loving yellow lab named Dixie. She is a handful, but we forgive her because she's so stinking cute. We also have a chocolate lab named Sweet Mia. Her name aptly describes her personality.

Why they chose this property

This property comes with a story and we have it because of my late father-in-law,. In 2003, he lost his battle with cancer. At that time, he had been retired and had owned a small farm in Augusta County. He loved to hunt, so for retirement, he purchased a 100+ acre slice of heaven where he could enjoy the land at his leisure. That was in 1996. When he passed away in 2003, we kept the home and used it frequently to share with friends and family.

My husband has always wanted to live on the lake, so when we sold the farm at the end of 2016, we began the search for a lake house at Smith Mountain Lake (SML). We had vacationed at SML two years prior and fell in love with how clean the water was, but yet it was still surrounded by such breathtaking scenery.

We toured a total of 32 homes before deciding on this one. And the sole factor that swayed our decision (because we looked at several phenomenal houses) to purchase this home - was the lot. It's a rare find to have a house with a pancake flat lot, but that has deep water. Many homes with deep water have steep lots at SML. The house we decided on needed so much work (which was a bit intimidating), but we were willing to put in some sweat equity to make this work. Furthermore, we have some very handy friends who spent countless weekends at the lake helping us get it ready.

We also wanted a property that was family friendly. We have many friends with children of all ages and we wanted our home to accommodate people from all walks of life. Steve and I have six nieces all ranging in age from three to fifteen, so we wanted a place that everyone could enjoy. My parents are in their 70's and with our minimal sloping lot, it allows for older people to get to the lake with ease. In short, this is a fun place for everyone.

What makes this property unique

The selling point for us on this home was one simple factor - the lot. We had looked at so many houses, but this was the ONLY house where no one was out of breath walking from the dock to the deck! We knew immediately that this house was THE ONE because of that. The pancake flat lot sealed the deal for us.

We are also in a very private neighborhood. There is a 1.5 mile back to our community which provides a sense of security and peacefulness.
