Rest and unwind with your family or friends at the Sanctuary. We designed this space with gathering and connection in mind. Enjoy natural lighting and open concept living in our newly renovated 19th century church building. Meals can be prepared in the spacious kitchen and enjoyed together around a 12-foot farmhouse table. After meals transition to our spacious yet cozy living room.

If you don't want to stay in, explore the Shenandoah Valley's great outdoors, rich history, and fine dining.

Beautiful and unique space. Great home base for fun holiday weekend with small kids. Provided a quiet and relaxing break from the city. Kids loved the drive in theater, just a short drive away.

This was the coolest vrbo I have ever stayed in. The converted church turned house made a perfect gathering place to celebrate our daughter's graduation. The beds were comfy, the kitchen well stocked and the great room (my favorite spot) was absolutely amazing with huge, sliding barn doors over the windows that let in lots of light when opened. The host was very easy to communicate with and responded very quickly. When we need a place to stay again, I will definitely come back to The Sanctuary.

Joel was very attentive to my messages and the house was very well supplied with kitchen condiments and spices. Our only struggle as five 73 year olds was maneuvering through the Roku system on the tv, but we finally figured it out. It would have been nice to have a second tv in the house but we made do with the one 40”. Thanks for letting us stay at The Sanctuary and hope to return again soon!

Family Wedding

We stayed here for our daughter’s wedding. The great room was the perfect setting for photos the morning of the wedding while getting ready!

We choose this property because of the handicap accessibility and it was perfect for that need. But the property was so much more. The was the space was laid out allowed us to be comfortable throughout our week long stay. The history and uniqueness of the property were an added bonus and will remain as part of our memories. The host’s communication was on point and all of our needs were attended to. Thank you for a wonderful experience.

Great family spot

We came into town for a graduation and needed a space for family, including my granddaughter who is 4 months old. Beautiful property, convenient location. Only thing that bothered us during our stay was the amount of spider webs in all the windows and the fact that the house is advertised to sleep 8 but there is an extra fee for more than 4 guests? This was confusing

Stay Vacation

Beautiful house, well designed and decorated. New appliances, kitchen with accommodations for cooking. Kitchen Aide Stand mixer, spices, flour ect. Our only drawback for the stay is the hard Well water. Only one tv on the small balcony inside the house. Not everyone in our family could climb up those stairs.

We are pleased that you mostly enjoyed your stay. We take guest reviews seriously and consider changes according to popular opinion. After three years on Airbnb a desire to unplug and enjoy the beauty of the area has been a draw for most people, so we have not added another tv to the home. As always we encourage feedback so we want to thank you for yours. Hard water has never been an issue that has made it to a review, so again thank you for the opinion. The water is however City water and not well water.

We had a great time, it was raining the whole weekend, but we had a good time fixing food and playing games. But after dinner when we were washing a few dishes the kitchen sink started to back up, something they should get fixed. We let it go down and ran HOT water through the pipes, but they should get it looked at

Wonderful accommodations

We were traveling for a family wedding in Winchester. We had a large group (6 adults and 2 children) and the adults were 1 couple and 4 single adults. There were plenty of places to sleep! I can't say enough about this property. It is conveniently located in Stephens City, near I81. The converted chapel is beautiful and the property is quiet and peaceful. it has all of the necessary amenities, even books and games for the kids! I saw where one reviewer complained about the lack of TVs, but our group spent time in the porch swings outside and the kids played inside and out the entire time - we never turned the tv on. We will definitely recommend this property to other family and friends traveling to the area. Joel answered inquiries quickly and courteously.

Favorite vacation rental of all time

This property was in the perfect location whether you need city ammenities or mountain respite. There is so much to see within a 45 minute drive any direction, yet gas, groceries, restaurants, a university are just 10 minutes away. This repurposed white clapboard traditional church is wonderfullly remodelled and was the perfect place to have a reunion with the 2 international students who lived with us and are like sons. The kitchen is well stocked and has a good gas stove for real cooks. The counter space! The dining room table! And there's a piano! Out back is the best bonfire ever devised with porch swings encircling the fire. If you go the hiking route, space age washer and dryer have you fixed up for the next day. We loved it and hope to come back some day.
