Staying in the 4-season "Forest" shipping container is not like living in a house or a hotel room or a glamping tent. It is like living in the wild, except you are encased in high-efficiency insulated walls with giant low-energy windows—and sleeping on a comfortable queen-size bed with EVERGREEN STITCHES organic percale linens, a Nectar mattress and La Colombe coffee service. You can watch shooting stars from bed. You will likely see a family of deer wandering through the woods while you make coffee.
Our cabins are not like other tiny home compounds in the area that have dozens of units set 10 feet away from one another. Your cabin sits on its own stunning 5-acre parcel in the middle of an old-growth forest, slate ledges, streams and resident owls and deer.
If it's cold outside (with the direct vent propane heater and wood stove it's always warm inside) we use the wood-fired sauna and lounge around drinking coffee. (You can book multiple 120-minute private sauna sessions, no extra charge.) If it's warm, we leave the three sliding glass doors open and lounge around the patio. (Lots of lounging...)
There is a beautiful new tiled indoor bathroom with a shower. In the summer, there is also a clawfoot tub on the deck with hot and cold water for outdoor/off-grid soaking and showering. We have a full size sink in the cabin, with a foot pump and faucet for water. There is a propane stove and enough pots/pans/basics to cook whatever you want. There is no refrigerator; there is a cooler for your ice and perishables. (Yes, we have a coffee grinder.) The direct vent propane heater is easy to use and super warm. The wood stove stays warm all night too. In the summer, a breeze off the 3,100-foot mountain behind us keeps the container cool, and fire flies and crickets in the field will lull you to sleep.
Staying in the cabin is an experience, not a simple overnight. There is something very special about it and this property. You won't want to go to sleep watching shooting stars from the deck on a summer night. On a 20-degree afternoon in the middle of a blizzard, it is 80 degrees and silent inside. Eight guests have gotten engaged here. (All said "yes!") Another guest chopped his bundle of wood into 1,000 toothpick-sized pieces thinking that the fire would burn longer and hotter that way. (It does not.)
There are streams and cliffs and tons of wildlife on the property. Owls and red-shouldered hawks soar above the forest cabin, as well as fireflies in the summer. Deer graze in the field and woods and eagles visit now and then. This place was built for two, but it can fit four. Two adults and two kids is perfect. Larger groups can inquire about our other cabins. (Click on our logo to see them all.)
The cabin site is on a truly gorgeous plot on the eastern edge of the Catskill Mountains. Our backyard is the flank of 3,655-foot Kaaterskill High Peak. It feels a bit like Maine, or Alaska. You can't see any neighbors from our property, but there are neighbors, great ones. (Please be courteous and respectful to them.)
All guests are left with potable drinking water. There are lights in the cabin, outlets and USB charging ports—all solar powered. The new bathroom has a shower, vanity, mirror, light, and compost toilet. The Finnish wet sauna is a 5 minute walk away. (You can book multiple 120-minute private sessions, no extra charge.) Built in a 10-foot shipping container with a genuine Harvia Finnish sauna stove, it's pretty incredible. Shower and benches inside...
Parking is 10 feet away. No smoking inside, plenty of room to smoke around the campfire outside...
Cell service is good across the property - 2 bars LTE - but the steel walls of the container make it not so good in indoors. (Put your phone by the window.) The other cabins on the property are a good ways away. Each has its own driveway and plenty of private space to walk around. (We designed it that way.)
Saugerties is a gem. Miss Lucy's (dinner), The Dutch (drinks), Circle W General Store (breakfast/lunch) Love Bites (breakfast) and Silvia or Red Onion (fancy!). Walking to the lighthouse is a must, as is hiking to Kaaterskill Falls, Huckleberry Point and North and South Lakes. Hunter Mountain is also 30 minutes away. Food shopping and farm stands are 10-15 min away.
