An enclosed garden filled with native trees, flowers, and serene statues exudes a zen-like ambiance. A commanding ocean view provides the perfect complement to the private hot tub where you can see and hear the waves crash on the rocks while enjoying a soak.

Recent interior renovations blend seamlessly with the vintage Binker Barn aesthetic. Updates and improvements include a new gourmet kitchen and an ultra-modern primary bathroom complete with a spa-style shower boasting body sprayers and a rain shower head. A 49-inch smart TV and comfortable sofas provide a spot to stream shows and movies, there's also a central wood-burning fireplace and several cozy sitting areas positioned to take advantage of the home's amazing views. Additional perks include free WiFi and a private washer/dryer.

There was a picture in the listing of a bunkbed - upon arrival we found out the top bunk didn’t have a mattress or way to get up. Two kids had to sleep on the floor. The hot tub was broken. Poorly heated. One of the windows was full of water. Most of the house was cold.

Overall condition of property was run-down and poorly maintained. Broken cupboards, missing paint, squeaky floors, hot tub with no jets/bubbles where we discovered a dead frog. Also the property had not been cleaned recently; dusty surfaces, not vacuumed, dead bugs everywhere, cobwebs, animal excrement on back deck as well as cigarette butts and empty beer bottle. Very dirty windows made it difficult to use binoculars or to see outside. Termite poop all over master bedroom dresser covering towels, caused by the termites in the ceiling. Loud popping noises from wood beams as house settled at night, all night. When I retrieved a spare blanket from the closet (because there is no central heating), I was upset to discover a live centipede hiding within.

Great overall but things to know before you go....

I gave this five stars because overall, the property was great and peaceful and the right price for what it offered. The view out to the ocean is spectacular and the location was exactly what we needed. With that said, a few frustrating things that are good to know before you go (or book this property at all): -- the bunk bed is very high and it doesn't have a guard rail or a ladder. For children, it's basically a middle-of-the-night broken arm waiting to happen. We pulled the mattress down to the floor and it worked out fine. -- The studio heat does not work. You need to use the space heaters. When we plugged in the two that were available, it blew the fuse for the wall outlets. We ended up plugging in one to a different outlet and it worked out fine. I raised the issue but it was not addressed during our stay. -- we did find some mouse poop in the silverware drawer. Gross, but we didn't spot any critters during our stay. -- none of the the wall outlets in the kitchen along the counter space worked, we had to plug the toaster and coffee machine up on the other side of the room and sit them on the floor. -- no control over the hot tub. The temperature was fine though so not a huge deal. -- pay attention to the check in instructions for location of the Vacasa office. Putting the address given into Google maps sent me 10 minutes beyond Gualala and suggested I drive off a cliff. The instructions do have important details on exact location, ignore Google maps.

Pretty home, lovely view, best for adults

Be aware the cottage layout is not for every family, and the low windows made the home feel unsafe for young children. There were multiple spots where if you opened a window you could... fall down an entire story (both outside and inside, oddly). Unique space comfortable for adults, raw wood walls and deck meant splinters in fingers & toes. Fireplace is wood burning and its bring your own wood. Central heat is not offered to guests, and since it's an open layout, our foggy weekend was wet and cold inside (you have to tweak with minisplits, space heaters, and wall heaters, so again, fine for adults not ideal for kids.). We might come back without our kids.

Nice quiet private retreat in the woods close to the Sea Ranch Lodge

We loved the quiet setting of the home with no surrounding homes or walking trails intruding on its privacy and large bank of windows with bench seats facing an oven view. Also, its nearness to the Sea Ranch Lodge for dining and to the hot spot area for hiking in the redwoods was appreciated as well.

Nice private retreat

Nice house with a lot of privacy. Good location with a lot of amenities around. Very clean and well maintained. Though the description says it can accommodate 8, there is proper beds for only 6, the remaining have to make do with some berths in the living room.

Fledgling hawks off the deck......

The Zen retreat is extremely quiet and tucked back in amongst a corner of the woods giving lots of bird watchers a chance to use the deck and binoculars! The kitchen is well stocked which is always a plus. No need to bring a French Press, they have that too. The layout is nice for more than one family, and space wasn't an issue.

Great stay!

Our family of four (two adults / two kids) really enjoyed our stay at Zen Retreat! It is a very beautiful home, well-kept and thoughtfully decorated and furnished. We loved the hot tub and the deck with the nice sunset views, the cozy fireplace, and the living room area with the view, ideal for morning coffee and a nice read with a fantastic view! Enjoyed the large TV. Internet worked well. Nice, functional designer furniture. The kitchen is well stocked with all essentials (utensils, basic appliances included). It has brand-new fridge, dishwasher, electric stove/oven, and microwave. Linens, towels, toilet paper, paper towels, dishwash/washer soap, etc. were all properly stocked. However, it did not include consumables such as tin foil or plastic wrap, cooking oil, most spices, etc. The home is very cozy and delicately decorated. Recent updates noted at both bathrooms and part of the kitchen area. As with similar age homes, the lighting can be funky (figuring out which switch does what, or outlet locations/capacity, etc.), but it was overall functional and possible to maneuver. Heating/AC is controlled by individual mini-splits. Practically brand-new and large gas grill, just had to use a lighter (there’s one by the fireplace) to start it, as the grill’s igniter button was wet from rain. Access to Sea Ranch rec centers is a plus (pools, saunas, tennis courts) by using the guest passes provided with the booking. Location is just a few minutes from Surf and Gualala markets (groceries), and a handful of restaurants (pizza, fish & chips, tacos, plus the Sea Ranch lodge café, are all nearby). Got to see tons of birds, including a couple of naughty blue birds greeting us every morning through the large bathroom window, quite a bunch of Bambis around the property, and also got to hear a ton of wild turkeys constantly laughing apparently at their own turkey jokes.
