Nov. 8 update: Maine is beautiful in winter and spring! Consider a stay from November through May.
GENERAL NOTE: We now give priority to longer-term visitors. But always ask about dates you may be interested in, including for a stay of just a few days or a week, in case there are quick changes in the schedule. We'll gladly accommodate you if we can.
** IMPORTANT ABOUT BOOKING REQUESTS: INQUIRE any time, and we'll be happy to give you a customized quote for your needs, very promptly. :) Just please don't formally Request dates till you've gotten that response from us. It hurts our standing on the rental platform if we decline booking requests that we can't fulfill.
REVIEWS: Since March 2020, we've mostly had long-term, private-booking renters, hence the slight age of most reviews here.
Now about that DESCRIPTION...
===============
Hello! Here at Fish Point we’re unique in welcoming not only summer and fall vacationers, but also, year-round, business travelers or medical personnel needing a longer stay, and people desiring artist-retreat rentals: writers, visual artists, and composers/songwriters. *
While we know some travelers look for a stand-alone house, this is not "just an apartment." As one happy guest remarked when he first walked in: "You have a palazzo [a palace] here!" This palazzo is also handicap-accessible. We're highly respectful of our guests' needs for peace and privacy. Meanwhile, we're available for special needs, help in emergencies, the latest tips and advice about the area.
We call our rental business "THE 'GUST' HOUSE" for the sea winds that make things exciting!
Our home was built in 2002, on a 3-1/2 acre property with a fascinating early American naval-defense history. The house is right along quiet Fickett's Point Road, on the back side of Narraguagus Bay just minutes from Milbridge's center. It's a great road for scenic walks & biking. Cross the broad field behind our house, and you come first to a beautiful gazebo facing the bay (new in 2020), then to a footbridge leading to our own wooded peninsula, used only by our family and guests, which gives you 270-degree views of the ocean, bay, town, and spectacular sunsets across the water. Enjoy the sights from the gazebo, the trails, the benches, or take a meal out to the picnic table at the end of the Point! Sunsets are spectacular out there.
A set of stairs leads you down to the beach, one of the rare sand beaches on the Maine coast--along with the large boulders characteristic of the area. We're near the town marina, and kayak rentals are nearby.
We live in the adjoining house, which we've made sonically and visually private from the 1300 SF apartment. The rental apartment is all on the ground floor, with its own private entrances, garden, and a patio/terrace facing the water. It's handicap-accessible, with wide doorways and hall, and flooring of tile, wood and low-nap carpeting--smooth surfaces for walkers or wheelchairs.
Bedrooms are large for this part of Maine. One has a king bed and the other 2 have queen beds. The king BR has its own private ensuite bathroom with shower. The other two BR's share a bathroom with a large tiled shower. The fully appointed kitchen has excellent appliances, including dishwasher and high quality LP gas range/oven. And of course a lobster pot! The dining area adjoins the large living room, and the apartment has its own washer & dryer. Decor and furnishings are charming, restful--and unique, not off-the-rack.
Other amenities: Up-to-date flat-screen television with Spectrum TV, Roku with Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc., plus internet music programs and other bundled services. (BYO Roku device if you have one.) Spectrum fiber-optic internet, blazing fast. Cell services work fine in our location. Small library, games for rainy days, etc.
Since acquiring this home in April 2014, we've been gradually restoring the lovely garden beds that surround the entire house. They combine native and wild plants with more formal plantings. The apartment has its own "secret garden" area, and private patio with a view across the fields and bay, and its own BBQ grill.
Though 2014 was our first year at Fish Point, we owned a vacation cottage in Milbridge from 2008-22, and have rented to travelers since 2009. We've gotten raves from our renters at both properties!
LOCATION, LOCATION: Guests often tell us how happy they are about our geographic location, too. Milbridge is a great small town, and we're about equidistant from Mt. Desert Island (Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor) and the farthest-east coastal towns like Lubec and Eastport -- and Campobello Island! Do bring passports if you plan to visit Campobello, since it's Canadian. It's easy to make a day or half-day trip to these famous, fascinating vacation spots from our place.
We're less than an hour's drive from ACADIA NATIONAL PARK. The main part of the Park is on Mount Desert Island, about 50 minutes from us. But a less-known section, Schoodic Point, is just about 20 minutes away, and is quieter, fewer crowds, same breath-taking views. Schoodic Point, the part of Acadia that Mainers tend to frequent, also has a fine information and conference center and campground, and is near many art and craft studios.
* Our guests' vacation and retreat rental fees help to support the work of Sunrise County Arts Institute, the small Maine non-profit we founded in 2014 as a resource for quality music, theater, writing and visual arts activities in Milbridge and the DownEast/Acadia area.
