Great getaway in Portugal Cove
This rental exceeded our expectations - it is clean, modern and well-fitted out (big TV, Bell Express vu, internet). The gas fireplace is great for taking the chill off a cool evening. The kitchen has everything you could possibly need. The front deck and sitting area offer great views of the "tickle" and up into Conception Bay where the sun goes down. Looking South you see Portugal Cove harbour where the ferry runs in an out to Bell Island (where there is an old iron mine that offers great tours - highly recommended). The house is very private being located at the end of the street though you will get the occasional walkers and fishermen crossing between the house and shore to access the trail that runs up the shoreline to the North. Portugal Cove is pretty and offers a couple of restaurants. You might be able to get a fisherman to part with a freshly caught cod on the harbour front. Portugal Cove is 20 minutes or so from the airport and another 20 minutes puts you into the heart of St. Johns. The area offers a good number of shoreline walks including the one starting right outside the house that offers easy to moderately challenging hiking along the shore and up into the woods. As the website indicates, its not the best place for young kids given the presence of the cliff lined shoreline. Great place, great location - highly recommended.
