Cook Street Gate is one of the two remaining medieval city gates, built around 1385. It has now been converted into luxury holiday accommodation, and provides a unique place to stay in the heart of Coventry.

The property retains the character of the medieval gatehouse now combined with modern luxury to provide high quality self-contained accommodation.

Original features such as the unique historic stonework are combined with modern luxury to ensure a really comfortable stay.

A luxurious bed and plenty of hot water in a modern shower, along with all you need in the kitchen and living areas are available right in the heart of the city. With views over Lady Herbert’s Garden, Swanswell Gate is an oasis in this historic city.

Downstairs there is a modern kitchen-dining room, with Corian grey quartz worktops, modern Neff cooker with induction hob, integrated dishwasher, microwave, fridge with icebox, and quality cooking equipment.

On the first floor is a living room, with comfy modern sofa, flat-screen HD TV and dual aspect windows with a view over to Lady Herbert’s Garden. Guests can also view the original stone arch of the gatehouse from this floor.

On the second floor is a large double bedroom and a generously sized bathroom, with a large luxury shower.

Extremely privileged to stop in an old building.

Being in an old building that was just the 2 of us and even though it was right in the busy city centre, inside was another world.

Amazing place

Amazing place to stay, full of history. The accomodation is well laid out and is very comfortable. Having stopped at the other gatehouse earlier in the year this was massively larger and would suit a multiple night stay. Even with the external noise outside it's relatively quiet inside. Would be good if there was a history of the building available for visitors to read.....all in all though well worth booking

Wonderful, spacious, well equipped self-contained accommodation in an old tower

We loved the sense of space. A really nice kitchen on the ground floor, complete with a coffee machine. A large, relaxing lounge with a smart TV on the first floor. And then a very big bedroom, with en-suite bathroom, on the second floor. Great value for money, and a much nicer experience than stopping in an anonymous hotel.

Cold!

We spent the first couple of hours trying to get the place warm, none of the radiators were on and we later spotted windows were wide open. We found a lighter under the bed which may account for the smell of weed and the upstairs window being wide open. We also had to empty the dishwasher and change a light bulb in the kitchen. It was really just a very disappointing and unromantic start to our anniversary. No wine glasses, just a couple of beer glasses that looked like they had come from pub.

Unsafety

Without a doubt, the apartment is a different experience, a fantastic design, its cleanliness, even though there is only one bathroom, which is on the third floor.

Swanswell Gate was one of 12 original medieval city wall gates, and is one of only two remaining (the other being Cook Street Gate).

The building was completed around 1440 and was then known as Priory Gate, having originally served as the entrance to the prior’s land. Remains of Coventry’s city walls can be found in the adjacent Lady Herbert’s Garden.
