Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback about our home and the location.
I wanted to take a moment to address your concerns and to guide future travelers.
Chelem is a very sleepy beach town, and this is mentioned in our listing. Research of the area on youtube or google does portray Chelem as such. In January and February, most guests are looking for a very quiet and relaxed vibe. Chelem, nor any of the little cities along the coast of Merida, are good for shopping, nightlife/etc. In our tips about the home/area, we mention that it is wise to grocery shop in the "city" before arriving into town. Even Progresso, the touristy part of the coast does not have a vibrant nightlife. The vibe is very different from Cancun, Playa Del Carmen, Cabo, etc. As mentioned in your review, a better understanding of the area would have helped you to make a better choice for your family.
Privacy of the beach - no beach in the state of Yucatan, Mexico is private. It was made into law in 2020 that all beaches are open to the public. With that said, because Chelem is a small little beach town, there are not many people who walk the beach. Usually, you will find other homeowners or short-term rental guests along the beach. The tourist beach is in Progreso, along the Malecon (boardwalk), this is where you will find the traditional beach crowd, who are just going for the day. At night, you will find families strolling along the Malecon, but the town is sleepy after dark.
For the house, I am sorry that you do not like our lighting choice, daylight bulbs are our preference for lighting, as they mimic natural sunlight, which we felt was a good fit for a home on the beach. Both main bedrooms have 2 lamps each and ceiling lighting, and the third bedroom has ceiling lighting. The living room has two ceiling fans with lights, ceiling lights and a large lamp.
The kitchen - Some folks are not used to gas burners/oven. Sometimes a pilot light goes out or a person does not hold down the lighting mechanism long enough to spark the pilot light. We would have been happy to help you. Also, the kitchen is fully stocked for 10 guests with pots, pans, bakeware, microwave, toaster, coffee makers, French press and more. Was there something special or specific you were hoping to find, maybe a specialty item for cooking?
Linens and bedding – We buy and replace linens regularly, but I will make sure that we do a thorough check in of our linens and pillows. Thank you for letting us know you have a different preference for your linens.
Sliding glass doors – Because we are on the beach and so close to the water, sand regularly blows around the house and the sliding glass doors get hit with sand. With the beauty of the water at your doorstep, there is this compromise.
Overall, this might not have been the best rental for you and your family. I think that a resort-style home would have been a better fit. My hope that anyone who takes the time to read your review and my response will have a better understanding of the unique charm of the Emerald Coast of Mexico, including Chelem.
