À propos de cet hébergement

Cragmhor Mountain Retreat at Balquhidder Glen

Cragmhor is a deeply characterful four-bedroom artist’s home for up to eight guests, set amongst open meadows and the mountains of Balquhidder Glen. Warm, individual and closely attuned to its surroundings, it offers the increasingly rare pleasure of staying in a genuine and much-loved Highland home rather than a conventional or standardised holiday property.

Guests have exclusive use of the entire house, including a fully equipped kitchen, dining room, two comfortable living spaces, four bedrooms, three bathrooms and an additional WC. Outside, the private garden, rockery and sheltered decking provide peaceful places in which to sit, dine or simply watch the light move across the hills.

One of the great pleasures of Cragmhor is the view from the kitchen. The windows look towards the mountains, so even the simplest breakfast or pot of coffee is accompanied by the changing moods of the glen. A log-burning stove gives the kitchen an especially welcoming atmosphere, while a second stove in the main living room makes cooler evenings wonderfully cosy. The heating is controlled through a Nest system, allowing the house to remain comfortable throughout the seasons.

At the heart of the home is the richly characterful main living room, filled with original paintings, carefully collected furnishings and personal details that reflect the creative life of the house. Comfortable seating gathers around the stove, while a 42-inch Samsung Smart TV provides access to popular streaming applications through guests’ own accounts. A second sitting room offers an additional place to read, talk quietly or enjoy a little time apart when travelling with family or friends.

Original artwork is displayed throughout Cragmhor, lending warmth, authenticity and a gentle sense of discovery to each room. The house has evolved over many years around art, colour, nature and family life. Nothing feels overly polished or impersonal; its charm lies in its individuality, its history and the unmistakable impression that it has been created and cared for with affection.

The accommodation includes a spacious two-bedroom family suite, comprising a generous super-king bedroom, an additional double bedroom, an en-suite bathroom and a small private sitting room overlooking the surrounding hills. It is particularly well suited to families or guests who value a little extra space and privacy.

A peaceful loft bedroom has a comfortable bed and its own newly renovated shower room. On the ground floor is a comfortable double bedroom with a private walk-in shower room nearby. As the bedroom can be reached without using the internal staircase, it may be convenient for guests with limited mobility.

All four bedrooms are thoughtfully prepared with quality bedding, hairdryers and useful storage. The house has three bathrooms and an additional WC, with towels and toiletries provided.

The fully equipped kitchen includes a four-burner gas hob, oven, grill, fridge-freezer, dishwasher, washing machine, kettle, toaster, coffee machine, crockery, glassware, cookware and utensils. Starter essentials are left for guests’ arrival, including milk, tea, coffee, sugar, salt, pepper, herbs and spices, together with basic cleaning supplies.

Central heating and superfast fibre-optic Wi-Fi are available throughout the house. Private on-site parking is provided for up to three cars.

Outside, the sheltered decking is a particularly lovely place for morning coffee, an unhurried lunch or supper in the evening light. The garden is alive with birds and seasonal wildlife. Around twenty-nine species have been recorded in the garden and neighbouring meadows, including robins, finches and woodpeckers.

Barn swallows return each summer to nest around the house, gathering above the fields in the evening. Deer are also frequent visitors and are sometimes seen crossing the boundary of the property, while sheep and horses graze in the surrounding countryside.

There is something quietly remarkable about Balquhidder Glen. It has long been described as a “thin place”, where the distance between the physical landscape and something less easily defined seems unusually slight. At Cragmhor, that quality is felt in the sound of the burn and birdsong, the changing light over the hills, the mist settling across the meadows and the profound stillness that descends after dark.

The absence of urban light makes the glen a beautiful place for stargazing. On clear nights, the sky opens above the house with a breadth and brilliance rarely seen in towns and cities. Guests can sit outside beneath the stars, listen to the quiet of the glen and experience the particular sense of remoteness that makes this part of Scotland so memorable.

The house lies directly beside a cycle route, making it an excellent base from which to explore the glen on two wheels. Scenic walks and mountain hikes also begin close to the property.

One of the finest is the climb to Creag an Tuirc. From its viewpoint, the land falls away towards Loch Voil and the length of Balquhidder Glen, revealing water, woodland, meadow and mountain in one magnificent panorama. It is a favourite walk of the owner and one of the most rewarding ways to appreciate the scale and beauty of the landscape.

Nearby Loch Voil is ideal for quiet picnics, days beside the water and wild swimming for those who are experienced and properly prepared for Scottish conditions. Its shores are peaceful, dramatic and wonderfully unspoilt, with the surrounding mountains reflected in the loch on still mornings.

The glen also offers two memorable places to eat. Monachyle Mhor, set farther along the road beside Loch Voil, is renowned for imaginative fine dining and its strong sense of place. Approximately two and a half miles from Cragmhor, Mhor 84 offers a more relaxed and playfully unconventional atmosphere, with excellent food and plenty of character.

Together, they give guests the unusual pleasure of choosing between refined Highland dining and a lively local favourite, both within easy reach of the house.

Balquhidder itself is steeped in Highland history and Celtic tradition. The ruins of the old kirk, built in the seventeenth century, stand close to the grave traditionally associated with Rob Roy MacGregor. The present church also preserves links with St Angus, the early Christian missionary connected with the glen.

The landscape feels inseparable from these stories, and the sense of history is present not as a museum piece, but as part of the fabric of everyday life.

Cragmhor is a place in which to slow down, reconnect with nature and experience the quieter, more intimate beauty of the Scottish Highlands. It is a home for those who appreciate art, wildlife, landscape, comfort and a genuine sense of place.

Guests might spend the morning walking above Loch Voil, the afternoon watching birds from the garden, the evening dining beside the fire and the night beneath an extraordinary sky.

Above all, Cragmhor offers atmosphere. It is found in the glow of the stoves, the paintings on the walls, the mountain views from the kitchen, the swallows returning in summer, the deer passing quietly near the garden and the silence of the glen after nightfall.

Those who respond to places with soul are likely to feel it here.

Guest Access

Guests have exclusive use of the entire house, including the kitchen, dining room, two living spaces, four bedrooms, three bathrooms, additional WC, private garden, sheltered decking and parking area.

Private on-site parking is available for up to three cars.

What Do You Love About Your Property?

What I love most about Cragmhor is that it has never been conceived simply as a holiday let. It is an artist’s home, shaped gradually by family life, original paintings, collected objects and a deep affection for the glen.

The mountain view from the kitchen turns ordinary moments into something memorable, while the log-burning stoves in both the kitchen and living room bring warmth and companionship to colder evenings.

In summer, the sheltered decking becomes an outdoor room from which to watch birds at the feeders, swallows over the meadow and, from time to time, deer passing near the garden.

The house is comfortable and well equipped, with Nest-controlled heating, superfast Wi-Fi and generous living space, yet its greatest luxury is its atmosphere: quiet, unforced and unmistakably personal.

What Will Guests Love About the Area?

Guests tend to love the feeling that the landscape begins at the door. Cragmhor lies beside a cycle route, with scenic walks and mountain hikes close at hand.

The climb to Creag an Tuirc is a particular favourite, rewarded by a magnificent view over Loch Voil and the whole sweep of Balquhidder Glen.

Loch Voil is also lovely for picnics, peaceful days beside the water and wild swimming for experienced swimmers who are properly prepared for Scottish conditions.

Clear nights are exceptional for stargazing, with very little urban light to diminish the sky. For dining, Monachyle Mhor offers destination-worthy fine food farther along the glen, while the wonderfully quirky Mhor 84, approximately two and a half miles away, provides a more informal local alternative.

The old kirk, Rob Roy’s grave, quiet woodland, abundant wildlife and the enduring idea of Balquhidder as a “thin place” give the area a depth that extends far beyond its scenery.

A truly magical place. The rooms are spotless and very comfortable, with large beds. The artwork throughout the house adds real character, and the surrounding scenery is simply breathtaking. The house has a beautiful small garden where you can enjoy a cup of hot tea, observe the surrounding wilderness, listen to the gentle sound of the wind chimes, and watch birds at the feeder. In the centre of the garden stands a lovely tree that carries a strong, grounding energy. A nice touch is the studio room, where you can paint and create, feeling naturally inspired by the artwork and peaceful surroundings. We highly recommend this accommodation. Thank you for a wonderful stay.
