Granted a Market Charter in 1252 by King Henry III, the town's markets thrive nearly 800 years later. The delightful cobbled market square hosts two market daysâa weekly Wednesday event and a farmers' market on the last Saturday of each month. A short 7-mile drive brings you to the city of Carlisle, while the famous Scottish wedding destination of Gretna Green beckons just 14 miles away.
