What could have been a nice vacation was ruined when we were suddenly asked to pay an additional 400 just 30 minutes prior to check in. Had been in contact with host day prior to booking and realized VRBO had reverted to â2 guestsâ instead of the 6 I had repeatedly entered when searching for booking. Nowhere on my receipt had it indicated number of people, so I hadnât realized it was wrong. In that exchange, 24 hours out (home had been booked a month prior) Host said they had âmade a mistake on pricing but let it go since there were only two peopleâ but that we were fine, no problem. Then, when we were 3 hours from home and about 25 minutes from check in, I get message from host that âafter thinking about it, it would be fair to charge me an additional 400 for additional peopleâ. I pulled over to side of road and contact VRBO as this seemed insane and like a scam. Nope, host wanted 400 before we could check in. I donât have a spare 400 as I had budgeted carefully for this get away that was a gift to my children but I felt really stuck - would I lose all the money I had already spent, would we have to turn around and go home? It was getting dark and we were in the mountains with three kids and a dog, 3 hours from home and I was screwed and had to pay the 400. My trip had been ruined before we set foot in the door. House price in Vrbo was the same with 2 or 6 people when I tested it later, house slept 8.
