When we travel to Mexico, we love to experience more of the real flavors of a country with rich heritage and wonderful customs. Most "tourist" destinations in Mexico offer great vacations, but those resorts could be located anywhere.
This property in this location was very special to us. First, it's right on the ocean. You can see the beach right out your window and feel the ocean breeze and hear the ocean waves as you relax inside, Having a 9-year old that loves to swim, the waves were just big enough to play in, but not too big to worry about getting swept away - although I was always in the water with her beyond wading.
Unlike many other tourist locations, this beach was comparatively empty. You can walk/jog for miles and not have to step around anything other than the many sea shells scattered all over. And on the several breezy days we had, the kite surfers were out which made the seascape even more lovely with all the vivid colors on display.
The village of El Cuyo and the locals we interacted with were all friendly, helpful and accommodating. We didn't feel unwelcome anywhere and really enjoyed the charm that is unique around a small Mexican zocalo.
We took a day trip to Rio Lagartos which was quite enjoyable but we could have just as easily enjoyed another day in El Cuyo.
The caretaker - Magali (and her husband) were especially wonderful. They helped us with any and all requests including bringing us fresh fish to cook up for some great dinners we made in our own kitchen. The fresh coconuts were a nice treat mid-mornings as well. On our last day, I accidentally drove off with the apartment keys and the caretaker made arrangements to pick them up from us in Cancun. This was above and beyond in my book.
The owner, Matthias provided useful information that also made the stay more enjoyable (ex. you might want to bring your own food and pesos from a larger town on your way in).
I've read some past reviews and someone mentioned seaweed being an issue. We had seaweed too; however, the ocean remains shallow well beyond where the seaweed might show up so it was a total non-issue for us. Don't let this influence your decision to visit.
Overall, we had a fabulous stay. Everything was just right. My travelling companion loved it so much that she started looking at property for sale in El Cuyo!
