À propos de cet hébergement

Canyon, river & lake views, with gurgling waterfalls. Veranda, office, dog park.

Where better to enjoy a refreshing drink after a fun day out in the high desert than on a veranda perched on the edge of a canyon? This voluminous split level house offers stunning views of the Snake River, and Twin Falls Waterfall with the lake behind the dam. Water gushing from springs across the canyon provides a soothing backdrop to the scenery. The veranda, terrace below it, and all north-facing windows on the three floors have spectacular vistas, often including birds following the course of the river or circling on rising air currents.

Rock formations to the south of the house provide a resting place for deer and a home for rock chucks while augmenting the privacy provided by the four-acre garden.

Indoors, the upper floor has an extensive open plan living/dining/kitchen area. The living area comprises two comfortable seating areas one laid out to facilitate having a cosy chat whilst enjoying the view, the other seating was arranged with watching a film (or playing games) in mind. This section is larger, has a fireplace, and is equipped with a projector. The dining area has a round table with seating for up to six and splendid views of the lake beyond the dam at Twin Falls Waterfall. The full kitchen has two ovens, a five-ring gas stove, a microwave, fridge/freezer and a breakfast bench for those in a hurry to enjoy the day. The third bedroom is on the upper level.

Half a flight down is a corner sitting room with fireplace. With a high ceiling, tall windows and exceptional views to north and east, this room is whatever you make of it - a quiet nook for birdwatching, a cosy place for reading by the fire, or a quiet retreat, perhaps to play boardgames. An office is located at the end of the corridor with a bedroom (with a queen bed) and bathroom in between.

The bedrooms are spread across all three floors: The main bedroom is on the lower ground floor, with a king-sized bed, has canyon views to the south and east. Spectacular dawn skies will fill the room should you choose to leave the blinds open. In addition to an en suite bathroom and en suite shower room, a fireplace and walk-in closets, this room leads out onto its own large terrace. A couple of rocking chairs have been provided outside so the view can be enjoyed in complete tranquility. (The hot tub located here is to be removed - it does not work.) The second bedroom on the middle floor has canyon views and a bathroom (bath and shower) adjacent to it. The third bedroom is situated on the upper level and faces south. It has views of a rock formation and some garden.

For those tired from travelling, the 4-acre garden is there to be enjoyed, but with caution as this is an unfenced canyon rim property. For this reason, any guests with children will be required to sign a waiver stating that they the adults are responsible for supervision of the minors, and that the property owners are not responsible for accidents. The waiver can be sent in advance for inspection.

A day on holiday in this region might begin with a trip to Shoshone Falls, then a walk around Dierke's Lake followed by a swim in the crystal clear lake water. For others, waterskiing on the lake behind Twin Falls dam might appeal (boat not provided!). Alternatively there is a broad paved path along the canyon rim from Shoshone Falls to the town of Twin Falls that can be used for family walks, longer hikes, bike rides or running. Please pay attention to the warning signs if descending into the canyon from here. The path passes the site, a significant mound, where Evel Knievel made a world famous attempt to jump the canyon.

The Twin Falls visitor centre has information on kayak hire, fishing, game hunting, skiing, and trips to Sun Valley or Hagerman. Hagerman (a forty minute drive from the house) offers a wonderful day out with kayaking or paddle boarding to the Blue Lagoon for a swim in the pale blue crystal clear water emerging from the aquifer. The museum in the visitor centre at Hagerman is well worth a visit as fossils from before the last Ice Age are on display. The fossil beds in this area have become a national monument because of their significance for palaeontology -- fossils from many ecosystems from different periods are preserved here, and the 200 horse fossils helped clarify the evolution of the horse. Many activities can be enjoyed whilst here, such as fishing or a trip to the fisheries, or a swim in the hot springs along the Thousand Springs Byway. Other day trips might be to the Sawtooth mountains and Sun Valley, but closer to hand would be a trip to the spectacular Craters of the Moon Park (designated an International Dark Sky Park), the ice cave (currently closed for repair) and hot springs towards the border with Nevada.

À propos de l’hôte

Votre hôte

Image de profil de l’hôte
I get great pleasure envisaging guests enjoying this truly special place. I love to think of couples on honeymoon or celebrating an anniversary, of friends getting together, or visitors passing through being wowed by open skies, ever-changing water and the austere beauty.

Voici pourquoi l’hôte a choisi cet hébergement

The canyon view is superb, but as a gardener, I fell for the terrain with its rocks and boulders, and potential to be more productive, despite being located in the high desert. This residential area is unusually tranquil, and the total absence of houses on the north side, where the views are best, makes this an utterly private retreat.

When here, I rise with the sun, leaving the blinds open to admire the dawn skies, a different hue every day. Breakfast is spent watching the light change, transforming the water below it. Later I walk my dog around Dierke's Lake where the water is crystal clear, and the reflections stunning. On days off, I might paddle-board on the Snake River or at Blue Heart, but when I studying or working, I admire the vista from inside. Come evening, I might swim in the Snake River, walk the trail between Shoshone Falls and the town of Twin Falls, admiring the sun setting over Perrine Bridge, or simply relish the breeze on the veranda while admiring a view that one cannot tire of.

Voici ce qui rend cet hébergement unique

With views of a lake, river, dam, and two waterfalls, what more could one ask for? The complete absence of houses on the north side of the canyon gives total privacy to this retreat. Wildlife scurries along the canyon walls, birds nest there, coyotes disappear from sight as they return from a night of hunting, and owls flutter past in the dark. The closest road, visible far away across the canyon is some two miles distant, demonstrating the grandeur of the scene. One could hike, swim, paddle, base-jump, cycle, or drive to enjoy the notable sights in Magic Valley and beyond, or pass pleasant days with a good book, great friends and excellent ingredients. Life here is truly what you choose to make of it.
