Sisal is a quiet little seaside town, not yet as fully developed as, say, Progresso, into a tourist destination. That may be changing however, as there is a lot of construction beginning to happen.
This property, Sisal sur Mer, is ideally located right on the beach, a quarter mile east of the central part of Sisal. The neighbourhood is generally quiet except occasionally on weekends when locals from Merida tend to arrive. The house itself is a lovely reminder of the Spanish colonial days, but has been updated with modern appliances and conveniences, Wifi is super fast. Beds are comfortable. The pool is delightful. And of course, the beach and ocean swimming was wonderful.
But the most praise is reserved for the hospitality of Marty, our host, who lives next-door, and for Betty and her son, Marcos, two locals who also live in the compound. Marty was very prompt in responding to a couple of minor problems, and Betty was so very helpful when we needed assistance finding medical care. She also was periodically providing us with her home cooking throughout our stay, and we will remember a great night when we accompanied her and her son to Sisal's last night Carnival celebrations. She is a gem.
Our only recommendations for improvements are comfier living room furniture (softer upholstered chairs would be nice), and maybe a few wall hangings on the bare stucco walls to improve the acoustics of the rooms.
All in all, this was a great place spend a month in late winter.
