Perfect seclusion

Gary's -place is appointed as advertised and just a nice and quiet getaway. Do not hesitate to rent this spot if you are looking for a quiet and relaxing break from it all.

We had a great stay at this Crane Lake cabin and enjoyed it. It is very rustic, which we didn't mind and actually enjoy but there is no AC, no TV and no Washer/Dryer. The beds are small doubles, which after trying to sleep together the first night, my husband & I finally each took a bedroom, so I would say that it sleeps only two. There were only two blankets in the whole cabin and minimal pillows. I only saw one grounded plug-in, the rest were two-prong ungrounded. The location is great and the view is spectacular. It looks a little steep from the lake to the cabin but it wasn't bad at all to run up the steps. Items that were not in the kitchen that I missed were a strainer, and a meat thermometer - if you use those frequently like I do, bring them along. Also, the click start on the grill didn't work, so bring a long lighter. We would gladly stay again but would bring along some extra items that we didn't think we'd need.

What a glorious family stay!

We had all our kids and grandkids with us (20 total) and stayed in three of Gary’s cabins on Crane Lake for Memorial Day werkend. Stunning! We’ve stayed at Gary’s cabins before - superb host, location, experience. Our group was from 1.5-70 years old and there was plenty for all to do. We rented a pontoon from an area resort and fished, toured the Narrows, and climbed to the top of the gorge, all a short boat ride away. Can’t wait to stay at Gary’s again!

Location is great

The location is 5 star. The property is 3 star. Very small and no way would accommodate 4 adults. The place could use a through cleaning. Kitchen table was broken. Patio furniture has seen better days. You need to take your trash to a marina and pay to dispose. You will need a boat to get to the house. Dock is nice.

Perfect get away

Stayed a week with my son and two grandkids. (7 & 12). Cabin is rustic (just what you'd imagine is for a guys fishing trip) and comfortable for four. Beds were comfortable and kitchen was well stocked with pots, pans and utensils. Deck off the kitchen has a good gas grill and table and four Adirondack chairs. Location is convient to Handbergs Marina (park and launch for $5/day) as well as access to Sand Point. Dock is relativity new and firepit overlooks the lake in a Northwoods setting. Fishing was good for northern and bass. We had three fish meals and brought a limit home to share with the girls. Would definitely go again.

Nice getaway on the edge of Voyageurs NP

We had a nice stay at this quaint little cabin on Crane Lake. The accommodations were as described...2 bedrooms, comfortable beds, linens and clean. The dock was near the cabin, so even though you had to haul your gear up some stairs...it wasn't a very long hike. The cabin itself was older, but has had the necessary updates to make it comfortable for a family to spend the week. Two minor complaints - I wish the property had a fire pit. It sure would have been nice to spend the evenings outdoors around a campfire. I also think the price is a little high for the accommodations. $20 per night less would price it inline with other VRBO rentals I've personally rented.

Its always a pleasure for me to share this special wilderness setting. I have been bringing my family up here since 1995. Its the right mix of no roads, only a boat or sonwmobile access, but within one mile of bars and resturants. We are still looking into a firepit of some type. Since this is no road access and on the edge of the BWCA and Voyageures National Park, wildfires are always an issue. It has been very hot and dry the last 2 months. Price is always a factor on everybodys vacation. The cabin per day or week price is based on others on Crane Lake. Being no road access that I truly enjoy does make the costs abit higher. Thanks so much for your stay and thanks for the input. I will seriously look into having a fire pit of some time next year.

Short fishing vacay

Cute little cabin, lots of steps but worth being closest to the dock :) On the small side with older furnishings but perfect for our needs and absolutely loved that my dogs were welcome!! Beds were comfy and even though there was no AC and the heat into the upper 80’s the cabin is shaded and there were plenty of fans. Also had a nice selection of games in the cabin. My phone and internet came in great with AT&T as stated in the description. Fishing was good, we caught lots of perch, bass and keeper walleyes- got the best fish trolling near the cabin! A very beautiful setting and loved the convenience of the dock. The owner was super responsive and very nice. We did our business with Handberg Marina and I highly recommend them! My only suggestion is to build the shower up a bit (maybe add a lip?) to decrease guests getting the floor wet. Definitely recommend this host and already planning a return next year!

This property is a boat in only!! No road. This is a busy resort lake. We brought our kayaks thinking this lake was smaller. Not really a kayaking lake. The property has several cabins that are close. We were lucky the only other person was the hosts son which was in the next cabin over. The cabin was good, clean and well stocked of pots and pans, grill etc. We caught lots of fish, even off the dock. The dock was very stable. The host was wonderful and helped us secure a shuttle over to the cabin. (Thank you). The people over at the marina were wonderful and very helpful.

Great Lake House!

The cabin was fantastic and our whole family loved it! The view of the water and firepit area were wonderful! Only callout is that the property is NOT located on an access road and is only accessible by boat.

A beautiful place to stay

The cabin has everything you would need for a getaway. It has a beautiful view of the lake and the sunrise in the morning. The cabin has a canoe & kayak available, plus a nice fire pit and gas grill. There are other cabins nearby and the dock is shared with another cabin, but it was still mostly quiet, except the occassional motorboat. I liked that it's only accessible by boat and does not have a TV or wifi. I would definitely come back again.

Great location

This was the nicest place we have stayed at Crane Lake, tried 2 defferent resorts. Gary's was the only place that wasn't bug infested. Had everything we needed, nicely decorated, great view, good dock. What more do you need? Thanks Gary for a great stay.

Relaxation

We had a wonderful visit. We did t sleep as well as we would have liked. Not use to the hard mattress definitely could not use the hide a bed. The deck was absolutely fabulous and the view from the fire pit was breathtaking. Actually saw and otter swim by. It was hard d to leave.

Quiet and peaceful

The location and property was awesome. Crane Lake and everything it is connected to is immense. This is a quiet fishing area that was just what our family needed to get away from our daily chaos. The fact that the cell and wifi service was limited was one of the best parts. The listing didn't get 5 stars because it doesn't say that you need a boat to access the property. We found that out the week before and had to scramble to rent a boat. The check in process went smooth after we called Gary to ask him how to get in. He always answered his phone and answered questions but there were no check in materials provided. The cleanliness is fine for a backwoods cabin. Don't expect the Ritz.

Good Experience but need to know what you are getting

Overall, we had a great week. Everything worked as it should and we liked the old-time feel of the property. Most everything seemed original such as: linoleum, carpet, paneling, siding, windows, etc.. it was like stepping back in time which we really appreciated and reminded us of the houses we grew up in as kids! It is probably set up better to accommodate two fishermen and not an anniversary retreat, however. Beds, while relatively comfortable enough, seemed smaller than full size. (We are used to a queen bed and this was significantly smaller) Fire ring wasn't set up yet but he is preparing for it to be in its permanent home soon. Neighbors are rather close and can be heard from with the windows open. Dock was in great shape considering it had just gone through a flood. A few notes for others searching: Verizon and ATT work fine from the cabin. For the Fisherman, a 50 foot extension cord is necessary to plug in your onboard charger but this cabin does have an external (outside) electric outlet which was a nice surprise! Fishing was tough on Crane and Sand Point but great on Namakan. This means spending much more on gas than planned but the boat rides and scenery are well worth it! (Must see: "Boat to" spots are Grassy Bay Cliffs, Makooda Lake hiking trail (good blueberry picking!), & Vermilion River Gorge hiking trail and drive to spot Vermilion River Falls {watch out for the poison Ivy there though}. For a night out I highly recommend Voyagaire Lodge, great food! Overall it was a great trip, Thank you Gary!

Nostalgic and cozy

We had a great experience. The cabin is cozy with a breathtaking view, especially if you enjoy sunrises! I was reminded of cabins on my past. There are resorts, bars and restaurants a short boat ride away while allowing access to the remote wilderness of Voyageurs National Park. Gary was accessible and accommodating.

Crane Lake Fishing Trip

Had a blast fishing Canadian waters, completely accessible from Crane. Cabin was perfect for us. Was a bit hot the first night, but Gary brought us some fans and all was good. Gary also had some great recommendations for a fishing guide - Mike from Voyaguers Guide Service! and for dinner at Nelson's Resort. I would highly recommend! Thanks!

Fishing trip on Crane Lake

We enjoyed our rental on Crane Lake. Gary was very responsive prior to and during our stay. The cabin is rustic and was supplied with everything we needed for the stay.we had fun playing the provided games which included Monopoly, Jumanji, cribbage and others. Although there is a couch that pulls out into a bed, it was not the most comfortable. Grill and deck were nice for hanging outside on nice days. The dock is shares with another cabin. Would recommend this cabin for fishing or boating trips on Crane Lake. The lake water in July was perfect for swimming, but the it was a little warm for fishing (we only caught one Walleye the whole week we were there, however we caught small mouth and northern on the little vermillion). Would definitely consider renting this cabin again for futurd trips to Crane Lake. For a break from cooking, checkout Voyagiers lodge for dinner one night during your stay which is a short boat trip from the cabin.
